To keep a gurdwara’s Gurbani playlist live on YouTube, enable live streaming on the channel, clear the rights to every performance and recording, then send a looping playlist through an encoder or a YouTube-only cloud service. For a do-it-yourself setup, YouTube’s Live Control Room and a computer encoder provide direct control—but the computer and internet connection must remain running. A cloud service can keep uploaded video playing without an onsite computer.
1. Confirm the channel can go live

Verify the YouTube channel and check that it has no live-streaming restrictions from the preceding 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the planned launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.

Decide who will operate the stream and who is authorized to approve its content. Live access is only the technical prerequisite; it does not grant permission to broadcast a kirtan performance or recording.
2. Clear rights for the playlist before broadcasting
Make a rights check for each item, including the performance, the recording, and any accompaniment or other third-party material. YouTube’s live-streaming terms require the provider to have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party matches; a detected match can interrupt or terminate the stream. Even when material is licensed, a rights holder may need to allowlist the channel through Content ID.

The SGPC-published Sikh Rehat Maryada describes congregational kirtan as singing scriptural compositions in traditional musical measures and specifies suitable material for that setting. That religious context does not establish copyright permission for a particular recording. Separately, an SGPC notice from 2023 states that rights to Gurbani broadcasts from Sachkhand Sri Harmandar Sahib remain with SGPC and that no channel may broadcast that material at its own will. That notice concerns the Harmandar Sahib broadcast; it should not be read as a blanket rule for every gurdwara’s own recordings. Establish who controls the rights to the gurdwara’s performance and recording, and obtain any needed permissions for third-party recordings or accompaniment.
3. Build and test a local encoder setup

Create the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. YouTube’s encoder workflow provides a stream URL and stream key for the encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to the channel.

Prepare the playlist and visual. Load the rights-cleared audio and choose the visual that will accompany it. Confirm the playlist order, transitions and loop behavior in the encoder software before going live.

Configure the encoder. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. Use constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends not exceeding four seconds. Choose a bitrate based on resolution, frame rate and codec rather than treating one number as universal. Start with a modest output the connection can sustain. Prefer RTMPS, which encrypts the contribution feed sent to YouTube. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

Allow for connection variation. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom beyond the stream bitrate. For example, a stream set to a particular bitrate needs an upload connection that can sustain more than that bitrate—not merely match it. Use a wired connection where practical and avoid relying on a connection shared heavily with other traffic.

Connect and preview. Enter the YouTube stream URL and key in the encoder, start its output, then wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Check stream health and listen to representative audio before starting the public stream. YouTube recommends testing ahead of an event and monitoring quality during it.

Plan for operation and archives. A local encoder means the computer, encoder application and network connection must stay on. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that one continuous event will run indefinitely or produce an uninterrupted archive. Decide who will monitor the stream and how to restart it, then test the full procedure before relying on it for continuous service.
4. Choose between a local computer and a cloud service
A local software encoder is appropriate when the gurdwara wants direct control and can keep a computer and dependable internet connection operating. A cloud service is an option for continuously playing pre-recorded video. YouTube’s encoder guidance search result names Gyre as a cloud-based 24/7 tool, but the details below are questions to verify with any provider—not features established by YouTube’s guidance.

5. Troubleshoot common setup problems

Live streaming is unavailable: verify the channel and check for a restriction in the preceding 90 days. If this is the first enablement, allow up to 24 hours after turning it on.

The preview does not appear: check that the encoder is running, the stream URL and key were entered correctly, and the correct event is open in Live Control Room. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the encoder.

The stream health is poor or playback stutters: reduce the output bitrate or resolution, check for competing network traffic, and ensure upload capacity exceeds the bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.

The stream is interrupted after a music match: review the YouTube alert and identify the matched item. Confirm the relevant performance, recording and licensing permissions; a license alone may not prevent a Content ID interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel.

The stream stops or its archive is incomplete: check the encoder, computer and connection if operating locally, then follow the planned restart procedure. YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours, not an indefinitely long event.
