Use FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 input option to repeat an ocean video indefinitely while sending it to YouTube Live. Put it before the video’s -i option, read the file at its native rate with -re, and configure the output to match YouTube’s current requirements for your chosen ingestion protocol. The command below is a starting point, not a tested universal preset.

Build a basic looping FFmpeg command

For a standard RTMP-family stream, YouTube recommends RTMPS. Replace the destination placeholders with the ingestion URL and stream key shown for your stream in YouTube Live Control Room.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i ocean.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
  -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv 'rtmps://YOUR_INGESTION_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'

-stream_loop -1 tells FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely. It is an input option, so it must appear before the -i for the file it should loop. The separate -stream_loop option is not the same as FFmpeg’s video-loop filter, which loops frames inside a filter graph. See the FFmpeg documentation.

-re reads the input at its native rate, which is appropriate for a live-style output from a file. The example encodes H.264 video and AAC audio, uses a 4,500 kbps video bitrate, and sets a 60-frame GOP. Those numbers are illustrative: choose bitrate and output settings for the source and the reliable upload capacity of your connection, using YouTube’s current recommendations rather than assuming the example fits every resolution or frame rate.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Prepare the source and stream destination

  1. Check the video and audio. Confirm the ocean video plays properly and contains the audio you intend to send. Looping a video does not create an audio track. If the file has no audio, decide whether to add an appropriate audio source before streaming.
  2. Get the destination from YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, select the stream and copy its ingestion URL and stream key. Use the URL and key associated with the selected protocol; do not reuse an RTMP destination for HLS. Keep the stream key private—anyone who obtains it may be able to send content to your stream. YouTube’s Live Streams API documentation describes the ingestion URL as the primary destination URL for supported protocols.
  3. Choose the output settings. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR bitrate encoding, AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Use its current bitrate table for the resolution and frame rate you select; recommendations can change.
  4. Match keyframes to the frame rate. FFmpeg’s -g value is a number of frames, not seconds. For example, -g 60 means 60 frames between keyframes and is a two-second interval at 30 fps; at 60 fps, 120 frames would represent two seconds. Set the value according to your output frame rate and YouTube’s interval guidance rather than copying one GOP value blindly.
  5. Test before going public. Run a private or unlisted test with audio and motion similar to the intended stream. Check upload capacity and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages while it runs. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers testing and stream health.

Choose RTMPS or HLS

Protocol When it fits Setup and latency
RTMPS The straightforward choice for a standard looped-video stream using RTMP-family ingestion. YouTube recommends RTMPS for RTMP-family ingestion. Use the RTMPS URL and key supplied for that stream in Live Control Room.
HLS Use when HLS’s protocol or codec requirements suit your workflow. It requires an HLS stream key/protocol and an HTTPS URL, not an RTMP URL. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because video is sent in segments.

Follow YouTube’s separate HLS setup guidance when using HLS; do not treat it as a destination-string change to an RTMPS command.

Audio and quality settings to check

  • Video codec and rate control: For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 and recommends CBR. The sample uses H.264 through libx264; confirm your FFmpeg build supports the encoder you choose.
  • Bitrate: Use YouTube’s current bitrate table for the selected ingestion resolution and frame rate, then ensure your upload connection can sustain the output. If capacity is unreliable, lower the bitrate or resolution rather than treating the sample’s 4,500 kbps as a universal target.
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says it should never exceed four seconds. Convert the target interval into frames for the actual output frame rate.
  • Audio: YouTube accepts AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. Its advanced guidance recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo and 128 kbps stereo audio; the sample uses those values. Verify the source audio is present and suitable.

Troubleshoot a looped YouTube stream

  • The input ends instead of repeating: Put -stream_loop -1 before the relevant -i and confirm it applies to the ocean file, not another input.
  • YouTube reports a configuration problem: Compare the codec, bitrate mode, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio codec, and protocol with YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Check that the URL and key correspond to the protocol selected in Live Control Room.
  • The stream stutters or drops: Check upload capacity and YouTube stream-health messages. Reduce output bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the stream. Neither the FFmpeg command nor YouTube’s documentation guarantees uninterrupted operation on a particular network.
  • The picture or sound jumps at the loop point: Repetition does not make a file’s ending match its beginning. If you need a seamless transition, edit or crossfade the media; changing the loop option alone will not remove a visible or audible seam.
  • The process stops during a long session: This command handles input repetition and encoding, but it does not by itself provide process supervision, automatic reconnect, power reliability, or a guarantee of 24/7 uptime. Those require separate planning, engineering, and testing.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the uploaded ocean video to keep looping without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs a YouTube stream from the cloud. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the video as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
