Store the playlist ID, desired video IDs, and rotation policy in your repository; let a scheduled workflow compare that configuration with the current playlist; then use OAuth-authorized playlist-item API calls to add, remove, or reorder entries. Make the workflow safe to rerun: GitHub schedule events are best-effort, not a minute-exact delivery guarantee.
How the playlist rotation works
GitHub Actions starts the workflow from a POSIX cron schedule. The workflow reads your rotation configuration, fetches the playlist’s current entries, calculates the intended state, and applies only the required changes through the YouTube Data API.
YouTube represents each entry as a playlistItem. Its id identifies the playlist entry; snippet.resourceId.videoId identifies the underlying video. Keep both values: deletion requires the playlist-item ID, not the video ID. Google’s playlist-item resource reference documents these fields.
Choose the schedule and rotation policy
Set the cadence
GitHub Actions schedules use POSIX cron syntax, and the documented shortest interval is five minutes. In practice, choose a cadence appropriate to how often your playlist should change rather than scheduling frequent updates by default. GitHub’s workflow syntax reference documents the schedule format.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Schedules use UTC unless you specify an IANA timezone. Leave the timezone unspecified for a fixed UTC schedule; use a named timezone when the rotation should follow local wall-clock time. GitHub documents that if a scheduled time is skipped during the spring-forward daylight-saving transition, the run advances to the next valid time.
Decide what the playlist should contain
Keep a clear desired state in version control: the target playlist ID, an ordered list of video IDs, and the policy for how many entries to retain. For example, a policy might retain the latest N videos from a maintained list, or rotate through a defined sequence. The API provides playlist operations, but the rotation policy itself is yours to specify.
Prefer a reconcile approach: list what is present, compare it with the desired state, and make only necessary changes. This makes retries safer and avoids unnecessary writes. Replacing entries without checking current state is simpler but increases quota use and the chance of deleting an entry unintentionally.

Create the scheduled GitHub Actions workflow
Add a workflow file under .github/workflows/. Include workflow_dispatch so you can test or recover manually, and configure schedule for the recurring run. Scheduled workflows run against the latest commit on the repository’s default branch, so changes to the schedule or rotation configuration must reach that branch before normal scheduled runs use them. See GitHub’s schedule event documentation.

Here is a minimal scheduling shell. Replace the example cron time and script path with your intended cadence and implementation:
name: Rotate YouTube playlist
on:
schedule:
- cron: '17 8 * * *'
workflow_dispatch:
permissions:
contents: read
jobs:
rotate:
runs-on: ubuntu-latest
steps:
- uses: actions/checkout@v4
- name: Reconcile playlist
env:
YOUTUBE_OAUTH_REFRESH_TOKEN: ${{ secrets.YOUTUBE_OAUTH_REFRESH_TOKEN }}
YOUTUBE_CLIENT_ID: ${{ secrets.YOUTUBE_CLIENT_ID }}
YOUTUBE_CLIENT_SECRET: ${{ secrets.YOUTUBE_CLIENT_SECRET }}
run: python scripts/rotate_playlist.py
The sample cron runs daily at 08:17 UTC because no timezone is specified. The script and OAuth flow are intentionally not included as ready-to-run code: you must implement them for your chosen language and credential setup. GitHub’s documentation explains workflow syntax and manual dispatch separately; the manual dispatch reference covers the latter.

Authenticate with OAuth, not an API key
Changing a playlist requires OAuth authorization. An API key alone is not sufficient for playlist writes. The YouTube API’s insert and delete methods list supported scopes including https://www.googleapis.com/auth/youtube and https://www.googleapis.com/auth/youtube.force-ssl; consult the method references for their current authorization requirements: insert and delete.
Create an OAuth client and a credential/refresh strategy for the channel owner in Google’s developer tooling. The API references establish the OAuth requirement and accepted scopes, but do not make an unattended refresh token appear automatically; plan for the consent and credential lifecycle before relying on a scheduled job.

Repository secrets are straightforward for a single workflow. For higher-risk operations, an environment secret can be scoped to an environment and protected by required reviewer approval. Choose the boundary that fits your channel’s operational risk.
Reconcile playlist items without duplicates or accidental deletions
- Read the current playlist. Call
playlistItems.listfor the target playlist and collect each entry’s playlist-itemidand video ID atsnippet.resourceId.videoId. Handle pagination if the result spans multiple pages. - Calculate the target state. Apply your configured ordering and retention rule to the configured video IDs. Decide explicitly how the script treats a video that is unavailable, already present, duplicated in configuration, or no longer intended for the playlist.
- Insert missing entries. Use
playlistItems.insertwithsnippet.playlistIdandsnippet.resourceIdfor each entry to add. Confirm that the video can be added before treating an API rejection as a transient failure. - Delete unwanted entries. Re-check the current state before destructive changes when practical, then call
playlistItems.deletewith the playlist-itemid. Do not pass the underlying video ID in its place. - Set the order when needed. If order or position must change, use
playlistItems.updateand the appropriate playlist-item resource fields. Do not assume insertion alone will produce the desired order. - Report the result. Emit a concise summary of entries added, removed, reordered, and any failures, without logging secrets. Make failures visible in the Actions run result so you can investigate or dispatch a recovery run.
The relevant API methods are documented at playlistItems.insert, playlistItems.delete, and playlistItems.update. A reconcile algorithm is an implementation choice built from these API operations; Google does not prescribe one universal rotation policy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan for schedule delays and missed runs
GitHub describes scheduled events as best-effort: high Actions load can delay them, particularly near the start of an hour, and queued scheduled runs can be dropped. Choose a cron minute away from the top of the hour where possible, but do not treat that as a guarantee of punctual execution. GitHub’s schedule documentation describes this limitation.

Because a retry may happen after a partial run, make operations converge on the configured desired state. Include manual dispatch as a recovery path and monitor run results if playlist timing matters. Public repositories also have a separate lifecycle caveat: GitHub automatically disables scheduled workflows after 60 days without repository activity.
Quota, playlist limits, and other API failures
Google’s API references list a quota cost of 1 unit per playlistItems.list call, 50 units per playlistItems.insert call, and 50 units per playlistItems.delete call. These are the costs shown in the respective method references, which do not state a publication year in the retrieved content: list, insert, and delete. A read-and-diff workflow can avoid spending write quota on entries that are already correct. Check your project’s quota allocation and current limits in Google’s project console rather than assuming a universal allowance.
Playlist writes can fail for reasons beyond authentication. The insert reference documents errors involving inaccessible items, duplicates, a playlist at its maximum item count, and unsupported operations. The delete reference also documents unsupported playlist operations. Do not assume every system playlist is editable; surface API errors in the workflow summary and correct the underlying cause before retrying.
Troubleshoot a failed or unexpected rotation
- The workflow did not start: confirm the workflow file is on the default branch and that its cron expression is valid. Account for UTC or the configured IANA timezone, GitHub’s best-effort scheduling, and the public-repository inactivity disablement rule.
- The API returns an authorization error: verify that the workflow is using a valid OAuth credential for the channel owner and a supported YouTube scope. An API key cannot authorize playlist changes; check the credential refresh and consent setup.
- Deletion fails or removes the wrong entry: ensure the request uses the playlist-item
id, not the video’s ID. Re-list the playlist before destructive changes so the mapping reflects its current state. - An insert is rejected: inspect whether the video is accessible to the channel, already appears in the playlist, the playlist has reached its item limit, or the target playlist does not support the operation.
- The list looks correct but the order does not: explicitly update playlist-item position with
playlistItems.update; insertion and deletion alone may not implement your intended ordering. - A run partially completed: rerun only after the process compares actual state with the desired state. A well-designed reconcile run should recognize completed changes and avoid duplicate inserts or stale deletions.
Or let it run in the cloud
GitHub Actions is for automating playlist changes; it does not itself keep a continuous YouTube live stream running. If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer does not need to stay on at home, and the service plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Nothing has to stay powered on at home; StreamNeo loops the uploaded material from the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot with no quality tiers.
- The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
