How to Loop a Playlist in OBS for YouTube Live

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop multiple local videos in an OBS broadcast, add them to a VLC Video Source and enable Loop Playlist. Install VLC first—64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC—then connect OBS to YouTube Live with the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. YouTube’s own playlist-loop control only repeats playback for viewers; it does not send a playlist into a live broadcast.

Use the right OBS source

Source Best for Loop behavior Requirement
Media Source Repeating one media file Its Loop setting repeats that file. No VLC requirement is stated for this built-in source.
VLC Video Source Playing multiple files as a playlist Its Loop Playlist setting repeats the playlist; Shuffle Playlist controls playback order. VLC must be installed. OBS says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

For a multi-file playlist, use VLC Video Source. OBS says this source uses VLC libraries for extended media support. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

Build and loop the playlist in OBS

  1. Install VLC. Match its architecture to OBS; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. If OBS was open during installation, close and reopen it, then check that VLC Video Source is available.
  2. Add the playlist source. In the scene you intend to broadcast, select the + button in the Sources dock and choose VLC Video Source. Give it a recognizable name, then add the local video files to its playlist.
  3. Enable repeat. Open the source properties and turn on Loop Playlist. Leave Shuffle Playlist off if you want files played in the listed order; OBS documents shuffle as off by default.
  4. Fit the source to the scene. Arrange and size the source in the preview. Check that the video is visible and that its audio is audible in the OBS mixer before connecting to YouTube.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live and create or select the live stream.
  2. In YouTube’s Live Control Room, copy the stream server URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. YouTube describes stream keys as like your stream’s password and address; keep the key private. See YouTube’s stream settings help.
  3. Start streaming from OBS. Wait for the preview in the Live Control Room, then use its Go live workflow for a scheduled stream. YouTube’s encoder streaming guide describes this connection process.
  4. Before a public broadcast, test with representative video motion and audio. Check the preview and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages; YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring health messages in its encoder settings guidance.

Why looping a YouTube playlist is different

YouTube’s loop control repeats a playlist for someone watching it. It is not an input to your live broadcast. To send pre-recorded files as a live show, put the files in an OBS media source and send OBS’s output to YouTube using the encoder connection. YouTube’s playlist loop instructions cover viewer playback, not an OBS broadcast source.

Troubleshooting

  • VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC, match its architecture to OBS (64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC), then reopen OBS and check Sources again.
  • Only one file repeats: Check whether you added the built-in Media Source. Its Loop setting repeats one file; use VLC Video Source for a multi-file playlist.
  • The playlist stops at the end: Open the VLC Video Source properties and confirm Loop Playlist is enabled.
  • Files play in an unexpected order: Check Shuffle Playlist. Turn it off to keep the listed order.
  • YouTube’s playlist loops, but no live show is being sent: That control is for viewer playback. Add the media playlist in OBS and send OBS to YouTube through the encoder connection.
  • YouTube shows no live preview: Confirm OBS is sending, and check the server URL and stream key in its stream settings. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview in Live Control Room and follow its Go live workflow.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that stays live from uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams uploaded video—not a camera feed—and is for YouTube.
