To loop a podcast playlist on YouTube Live without ending the broadcast, loop the media inside OBS while leaving OBS’s encoder connection to YouTube running. For one file, use an OBS Media Source with Loop enabled. For multiple files, use a VLC Video Source, add the files to its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist.
How the loop works
OBS plays local media into your scene, and its encoder sends that scene to YouTube Live. The media source repeating is separate from the broadcast connection: you do not need to stop and restart the stream when the source reaches the end of a file or playlist. YouTube’s viewer-side player controls do not make an encoder broadcast cycle through your local podcast files.
Use OBS’s media-source controls for the outgoing program. YouTube’s separate HLS transport playlist requirements concern delivery between an encoder and YouTube, not the order or repetition of podcast episodes; you generally do not need to change HLS settings to loop media in OBS.
Choose the right OBS source
| What you want to play | OBS source | Loop control | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| One local audio or video file | Media Source | Loop | OBS media-source workflow |
| Several files in a sequence | VLC Video Source | Loop Playlist; leave Shuffle off for a predictable order | Install VLC with the same architecture as OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC |
OBS’s documented media formats include common video formats such as MP4 and MOV, and audio formats such as MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. See the OBS Media Sources documentation for source behavior and supported media details.

Set up and start the looping broadcast
- Prepare the files. Keep the podcast recordings available locally and decide the intended episode order. Test the files in OBS before going live.
- Add the source. In OBS, add a Media Source for one file, or a VLC Video Source for a playlist. For VLC Video Source, add each file to the source’s playlist. If the VLC source is missing, install VLC and restart OBS if needed; match VLC’s architecture to OBS.
- Enable repetition. For a single Media Source, enable Loop. For a VLC Video Source, enable Loop Playlist. Leave Shuffle off if episodes should repeat in the same order.
- Decide what happens when the source is hidden. Check the source’s Visibility Behaviour if it may be hidden by a scene change. OBS provides options that can stop or restart, pause or resume, or keep playback running while hidden. Choose the behavior that fits your scene setup and test it; otherwise playback may not continue as expected when switching scenes.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream, then copy its stream URL and key into OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube documents stream setup and controls in Manage live stream settings and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Test before relying on the stream. Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview. Confirm the expected episode is visible or audible, then monitor audio, motion, connection, and stream health. YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the intended broadcast; see YouTube live streaming tips.
- Keep the encoder running. Once the broadcast is live, let the OBS source advance and loop. Do not stop OBS’s stream just to repeat the playlist.
Choose encoder settings for your actual stream
There is no single bitrate that suits every output. YouTube’s recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use its current guidance for the format you selected rather than copying a universal number: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Test your chosen settings and check stream health before the broadcast.
Copyright and channel considerations
Looping a file does not grant permission to broadcast it. Make sure you have the rights or licenses needed for every episode, recording, music track, and other material in the stream. YouTube’s live-streaming systems can identify third-party content; a stream may be interrupted or restricted if it includes content you are not authorized to use. Review the applicable YouTube policies and rights for your material before going live. Repeating content also does not by itself establish that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization requirements; eligibility is assessed under YouTube’s current channel policies.

End the broadcast only when you mean to
When the event should actually end, stop sending content from the encoder and end the stream in YouTube Studio as appropriate for the stream workflow. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive behavior is not a reason to stop and restart a stream each time the playlist reaches its end.
Troubleshooting
- VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC, restart OBS if necessary, and check that its architecture matches OBS. OBS requires VLC for this source.
- A single recording stops at the end: Confirm that it is a Media Source and that its Loop option is enabled. This is separate from VLC Video Source’s Loop Playlist.
- The playlist ends instead of repeating: Check that the intended files are in the VLC Video Source playlist and that Loop Playlist is enabled.
- Playback pauses or restarts after a scene change: Review the source’s Visibility Behaviour and select the desired hidden-source behavior. Test scene changes before going live.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Verify the current stream URL and key in OBS against the values in Live Control Room. YouTube’s Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream help page instructs third-party encoder users to copy the stream key from Live Control Room and paste it into the encoder.
- Audio, video, or connection problems: Test the whole setup, inspect the YouTube preview, and monitor stream health. Check YouTube’s settings guidance for the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, and connection rather than changing bitrate without regard to output format.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded recordings without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not broadcast from a camera.
