To loop one video in OBS, add it to your scene as a Media Source, select the file, and enable Loop in the source properties. OBS will restart the file when it reaches the end. That setting is separate from Restart playback when source becomes active, which only restarts playback when the source becomes visible in the active scene.
Set up a single-video loop in OBS
- Open the OBS scene you plan to stream. In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source.
- Name the source if prompted. In its properties, select Local File, then browse to and select the video you want to repeat.
- Turn on Loop. Leave the source visible in the scene you will broadcast; a hidden source is not what viewers see.
- Choose whether to enable Restart playback when source becomes active. This is useful if you switch scenes and want the video to start from the beginning when it becomes visible again. It does not make the video loop.
- Select OK, then preview the scene. Confirm that the video and audio play as expected and that the source remains visible.
OBS documents Media Source support for MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM files. See the OBS Media Sources documentation for source details.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a stream and copy its stream URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key and server details as prompted. YouTube treats the stream key as a credential that allows an encoder to send video to your channel: do not share it publicly.
- Apply the settings, start streaming from OBS, and check the incoming preview and stream health in Live Control Room before making the broadcast public or starting the event.
Exact labels can vary with OBS versions and YouTube’s current interface. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains how the stream URL and key connect an encoder feed to a live stream: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
Choose video, audio, and upload settings
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. For H.264, its recommended bitrates include 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection or computer can sustain them; choose settings your upload connection and encoder can maintain, then monitor stream health.

| Setting | YouTube guidance | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264, H.265, or AV1 | Choose a codec supported by your OBS configuration and hardware encoder. |
| Bitrate mode | Constant bitrate (CBR) | Set a bitrate appropriate for resolution and frame rate, and leave upload headroom. |
| H.264 bitrate examples | 10 Mbps at 1080p30; 12 Mbps at 1080p60 | Examples from YouTube’s encoder recommendations; different resolutions, frame rates, and codecs can require different settings. |
| Keyframe interval | Recommended: 2 seconds; maximum: 4 seconds | Set the encoder’s keyframe interval to 2 seconds where available. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps | Use a rate the source, encoder, and connection can sustain consistently. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3; 44.1 kHz stereo; 128 Kbps stereo | Use the stated audio format and stereo settings when configuring the output. |
| Transport | RTMPS recommended | Prefer the secure RTMPS option when available. |
For YouTube’s full, current recommendations, see YouTube live encoder settings. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend upload capacity with 20% headroom above the combined outgoing stream bitrate. If the stream is unstable, reduce the bitrate or output demands rather than relying on a connection that only barely meets the target.
Test and monitor the broadcast
- Test the complete setup before a long broadcast, including representative video movement and audio. A static opening frame may not reveal encoding or playback issues that appear during motion.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream health messages after OBS connects and while the stream is running.
- If recording a local archive matters, make sure the recording is enabled and check that the file is intact and growing in size.
- If OBS output is choppy or encoding is overloaded, lower output resolution or frame rate and simplify resource-heavy scenes. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide also recommends using Media Source or VLC Source for local video and audio files.
What happens to a 24/7 YouTube stream and its replay?
A continuous live stream is not a reliable way to create one complete YouTube replay. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all; streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. If a replay is important, keep a local recording as a backup and verify it rather than assuming the entire continuous broadcast will appear in the archive. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The video plays once and stops | Loop is off or was not applied to the Media Source. | Open the source properties, enable Loop, and confirm that this is the source visible in the broadcast scene. |
| The video starts over after switching back to its scene | Restart playback when source becomes active is enabled. | Disable that option if you want playback to continue from its current position when the source becomes visible again. It is independent of Loop. |
| The stream does not appear in YouTube’s preview | The encoder may not be connected to the selected YouTube stream, or the URL or key may be incorrect. | Check the selected stream in Live Control Room and re-enter the matching stream URL and key in OBS. Treat the key as a password. |
| Video is choppy or OBS reports encoding overload | The output settings or scene may be too demanding for the system. | Reduce output resolution or frame rate and simplify resource-heavy scenes; then test again and watch YouTube’s stream-health feedback. |
| Stream drops or reports connection problems | The connection may not sustain the outgoing bitrate consistently. | Check available upload capacity against the combined outgoing bitrate, allowing the 20% headroom YouTube recommends. Lower the bitrate if needed. |
| The full-day stream is missing as a replay | YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours. | Use a local recording when a complete replay matters, and verify the recording file during the broadcast. |
