To repeat a YouTube Live product-demo playlist, put the files in a concat-demuxer list, then use -stream_loop -1 to loop that list and -re to send it at real-time speed. This repeats the playlist; it does not guarantee gap-free transitions. The files must have compatible streams, codecs and time bases, and inaccurate duration metadata can cause timestamp problems.
1. Prepare a compatible playlist
Create a plain-text file named playlist.txt, with one file entry per line:

file '/media/demo-c.mp4'For relative paths, run FFmpeg from the directory containing the list and use file names relative to it. The concat demuxer applies path-safety rules. The example command below uses -safe 0 to allow paths such as the absolute paths shown above; only do this with a playlist you trust, because it relaxes those checks. Before streaming, check that each file has the same streams, codecs and time bases. Differences in stream length or incorrect duration metadata can produce gaps or timestamp artifacts. If the clips do not match, normalize them to a common video size, frame rate, pixel format and codec, plus a common audio codec, sample rate and channel layout. A September 2024 FFmpeg-user mailing-list response also recommends transcoding a static playlist to common properties before concatenation; that is community advice, not a guarantee of seamless playback (FFmpeg-user discussion).

2. Configure and run FFmpeg
In YouTube Studio, create or select an encoder-based live stream. Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for that stream into your encoder configuration. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream. YouTube’s setup instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Use this illustrative command as a starting point, replacing the endpoint and key with the values YouTube provides. It is not a tested, universal command; adapt the output settings to your stream and FFmpeg build.

The example’s5000kvideo bitrate is illustrative, not a recommendation for every resolution or frame rate.- The command transcodes video to H.264 and audio to AAC with the listed output settings. If your clips are already compatible, stream-copying may avoid encoding work, but only if their properties and timestamps work together and the resulting output meets YouTube’s ingest requirements.
YouTube recommends RTMPS and currently lists H.264, HEVC or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and keyframes every two seconds, with intervals not over four seconds. Its bitrate guidance varies by codec, resolution and frame rate. Choose settings using YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions, rather than copying the example bitrate blindly. Check that your FFmpeg build supports the selected output muxer and protocol.
3. Test transitions and monitor the stream
- Start with a short private or unlisted test if that suits your channel. YouTube advises testing before going live.
- Check the Studio preview for picture, sound and ingest warnings. Watch each clip boundary, then the transition from the final playlist item back to the first.
- If a transition stutters or leaves a gap, inspect the files’ stream layout, time bases, durations and timestamps. Normalize the clips to a shared profile if needed, then retest the actual playlist.
- Monitor stream health and YouTube’s messages while FFmpeg runs. The process and network connection must remain active; looping the input does not restart a crashed process or repair a dropped connection.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume the same archive outcome for a continuous stream lasting 12 hours or longer (YouTube encoder-stream guidance).

4. Troubleshoot common problems

Copyright and channel considerations
Only stream material you have the rights to use. A successful FFmpeg setup does not establish permission to rebroadcast a game’s music, footage, trailers or other third-party material. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization rules for your channel and content before scheduling a long-running stream. Repeating a playlist also does not itself guarantee that YouTube will treat the content as eligible for monetization; channel eligibility and content review are separate from ingest configuration.
