What determines whether your desktop can do it?
A computer running a pre-recorded YouTube Live broadcast still has to play the media and send an encoded stream to YouTube. Whether an old desktop can handle that depends on its actual hardware, operating system, source video, encoder, selected output settings, and sustained upload connection. The available guidance does not establish a universal minimum processor, graphics card, or memory requirement for this exact workload.
In India, test the internet connection and power reliability at the address where the desktop will run. A speed test is useful as a starting point, but it cannot prove that upload performance will stay stable through a long broadcast. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health: YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Check that your channel can use encoder streaming
YouTube supports streaming through an encoder. The channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction during the previous 90 days. Livestreams must also comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.

Choose settings the computer and connection can sustain
YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations below are encoder bitrates, not a universal broadband-plan requirement. Use them as reference points, then test at the intended settings. YouTube advises choosing a quality suited to the connection and running a speed test for upload bitrate.

These figures are YouTube recommendations published in its encoder guidance, accessed in 2026. They do not mean an old machine can encode every listed mode. Start with the lowest resolution that serves your viewers and that the desktop can manage. YouTube’s documented settings include RTMP or RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding. Prefer RTMPS for secure transport, and select only a codec your actual encoder and computer handle reliably. See YouTube’s full encoder settings guidance.

Set up and test the desktop before relying on it
- Confirm channel eligibility. Verify the channel and check that it has no live-stream restriction from the previous 90 days. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements.
- Prepare the source and encoder. Make sure the computer can play the recording and configure the encoder to use a supported YouTube ingest method. Choose a codec, resolution, frame rate, audio format, bitrate, and keyframe interval that the machine can sustain; do not assume a listed YouTube setting is supported by old hardware.
- Connect and assess the upload. Run an upload speed test, then use that result only as a starting point. A wired Ethernet connection from desktop to router is a reasonable way to remove the local Wi-Fi link, but it does not fix ISP congestion or outages.
- Run a representative test broadcast. Use the same video type, audio, movement, and settings planned for the continuous stream. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health.
- Watch stream health over time. In OBS, check the connection indicator and dropped-frame counter. OBS says accumulating dropped frames alongside a yellow or red connection indicator means the connection may be unstable or unable to keep up with the chosen bitrate. See the OBS Help Portal.
- Only rely on the setup after it holds up. A short successful test does not establish that the desktop, power, or internet will remain stable indefinitely. Test under the conditions and duration that matter to you before treating it as a 24/7 solution.
Common problems and what to check
- Dropped frames or a yellow/red OBS connection indicator: The connection may be unstable or unable to keep up with the selected bitrate. If capacity is the issue, try a lower bitrate or output quality and test again. Persistent ISP, router, or power problems may still interrupt the stream.
- The computer struggles to play or encode the video: Reduce the output demands and test again using the actual source and audio. There is no established minimum specification to certify an unknown desktop, so the result of a representative test matters more than its age label.
- Wi-Fi instability: Try Ethernet to remove one wireless link between the desktop and router. This cannot guarantee a fix for problems farther along the connection.
- Power interruptions: A desktop UPS is an optional backup-power aid. Choose runtime for the actual equipment load; it cannot promise uninterrupted service or protect against every outage.
Understand the limits of a 24/7 broadcast
YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents primary and backup ingestion addresses, stream status and health data, and conversion of a completed broadcast into a YouTube video. That documentation does not establish a universal archive duration or certify that a very long pre-recorded loop will remain uninterrupted or be preserved in full as a video-on-demand archive. Do not assume the entire broadcast will remain available as a VOD; see the YouTube Live Streaming API LiveStreams documentation.
Whether a particular pre-recorded loop qualifies for monetization, or whether a specific duration receives special treatment, is not established here. Check YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content. Copyright and other policy compliance still matter for prerecorded material.
