How to Loop Bhajans in VLC for YouTube Live—and What “Gapless” Really Means

VLC can repeat a bhajan playlist, but repeat-all does not guarantee gapless transitions. Learn how to use an encoder for YouTube Live, test playback, and clear recording rights.

To repeat bhajans in VLC, add the tracks to a playlist and turn on playlist loop (also called “Loop” or “Repeat All” in some versions). That makes VLC return to the first playlist item after the last one; it does not guarantee a gapless transition between separate audio files. VLC also does not send a broadcast to YouTube by itself: you need a software or hardware encoder to capture the playback and send the program to YouTube Live.

Set VLC to repeat the bhajan playlist

  1. Add the recordings: Open the bhajan files in VLC and arrange them in a playlist in the order you want. Check that every intended track appears in the list.
  2. Choose playlist loop: Enable the loop or repeat-all mode. VLC’s documentation distinguishes this from repeat-current-item: playlist loop returns to the start of the list after its final item, while repeat-one repeats only the selected track. The exact label and control can vary by VLC version and interface. See the VLC project documentation change on playlist looping.
  3. Verify the cycle: Play through the end of the playlist, or seek close to the final track’s end, and confirm VLC begins the first track again. Check that the intended repeat mode is active rather than repeat-one or no repeat.

Does VLC make separate bhajan files gapless?

No gapless guarantee is established for playlist looping. The setting controls what VLC plays next; it does not establish that two separate files will join with no pause, silence, or audible change at the boundary. If uninterrupted sound is essential, test the exact recordings and playback setup before broadcasting. Listen to transitions between every pair of tracks, especially the last-to-first transition, using the same files and settings planned for the live stream.

Send VLC playback to YouTube Live with an encoder

VLC handles playback; an encoder sends the resulting program to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses the stream URL and stream key provided in YouTube Studio. In your chosen software or hardware encoder, make VLC’s playback available as an audio source and configure the program you intend to broadcast. The capture method and menu names depend on the encoder, operating system, and software versions, so there is no single verified sequence that applies to every setup. YouTube explains the encoder workflow in its guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.

Configure and test before the event

  • Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the resolution, frame rate, codec, and other settings you choose. A suitable bitrate depends on those choices and your available upload capacity; do not pick one without checking both.
  • Use RTMPS for encrypted ingestion, as YouTube recommends.
  • Test with audio and movement representative of the planned broadcast. Check the Live Control Room preview before starting the public stream.
  • During the broadcast, watch YouTube’s stream health and check audio and video quality rather than assuming a successful start means the stream remains healthy.

See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for testing, monitoring, RTMPS, and recommended settings.

Clear rights for the exact recordings before going live

Confirm that you have the rights needed to use each bhajan recording in a livestream. Owning a copy or being able to play a recording does not by itself establish permission for live use. YouTube’s livestream terms require providers to have the necessary rights, including music licensing rights. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party material: a match can lead to a placeholder replacing the stream, interruption, or termination. For licensed third-party content, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and copyright guidance for live streams and handle any required allowlisting before the event.

Troubleshoot common loop and livestream problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The playlist stops after the final bhajan Playlist loop is off, or a different repeat mode is selected. Enable loop/repeat all and confirm the playlist returns to its first item. Do not confuse it with repeat-current-item.
The same bhajan keeps playing Repeat-one is active. Switch to playlist loop/repeat all and verify that VLC proceeds through the list before returning to the start.
There is a pause or audible change between files The playlist loop setting does not guarantee gapless transitions between separate files. Test the exact files and complete playback-to-encoder chain before going live; do not treat repeat-all as proof of seamless audio.
YouTube does not receive the VLC program The encoder is not receiving the playback as an audio source, or its YouTube connection is not configured. Check the encoder’s chosen capture source and confirm it is using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. Verify the program in the Live Control Room preview.
The live stream is interrupted after a copyright match YouTube detected third-party content, or the channel lacks required rights or allowlisting. Resolve rights for the exact recording and, where applicable, ask the rights holder to allowlist the channel before trying again.
