Use OBS Studio to play the VLC playlist and layer a logo and ticker over it. Add the playlist as a VLC Video source, place an Image source for the logo and a Text or Browser source for the ticker above it, then send OBS’s finished scene to YouTube Live using your stream URL and key.
What you need
- OBS Studio to assemble the scene and send it to YouTube Live.
- VLC installed on the same computer as OBS. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC. Match architectures: for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources
- Your playlist video files, a logo image, and ticker text—or a web page to show through an OBS Browser source.
- A YouTube channel eligible to live stream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check access in YouTube Studio before planning a broadcast. YouTube live streaming tips
Build the playlist and overlay scene in OBS
- Add the playlist. In OBS, use the Sources panel’s add control and choose VLC Video. Add the video files to that source’s playlist. If VLC Video is missing, confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS. OBS documents Media Source for an individual local file; for a playlist, use VLC Video. OBS Media Sources
- Add the logo. Add an Image source and select the logo file. Resize and position it in the OBS preview.
- Add the ticker. For a simple ticker, add a Text source and enter the text. If the ticker must be animated or generated by a web page, add a Browser source instead and configure it to display that page.
- Set the layer order. In the Sources list, keep the logo and ticker above the VLC Video source. OBS renders sources higher in the list over sources below them. Make sure each overlay is visible, then position it in the preview. OBS Sources Guide
- Check the whole scene. Start playlist playback and confirm the video, logo, ticker, and audio appear as intended in the OBS preview. Verify that the ticker is readable and does not cover important parts of the video.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select a stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s encoder setup. In OBS’s streaming settings, enter those values in the server and stream key fields. The key directs the encoder feed to the right stream and should be treated like a password: do not publish or share it. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder · Manage live stream settings
- Start the stream from OBS and check the YouTube preview before you make the broadcast public or share it. Confirm that the composite picture and audio reach YouTube, not just the local OBS preview.
Choose YouTube encoder settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP. Its published encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. Use the YouTube table for the resolution and frame rate you actually plan to send. Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
| Setting | YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMPS recommended |
| Video codec options | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 |
| Rate control | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps |
| H.264 at 1080p30 | 5 Mbps minimum; 10 Mbps recommended |
| Stereo audio | AAC or MP3 supported; 128 Kbps listed as the advanced setting |
The 1080p30 figures are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a guarantee of picture quality or evidence that a particular internet connection can sustain them. Test before the broadcast
- Check YouTube’s preview for the playlist picture, logo, ticker, and audio.
- Confirm that the logo and ticker remain above the playlist in OBS’s Sources order and are not hidden.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators while testing and during the live broadcast. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health. Encoder settings · Encoder stream setup
Troubleshoot common problems
| Problem | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is not available in OBS | VLC is missing, or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS—for example, pair 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. OBS Media Sources |
| The playlist plays, but the logo or ticker is missing | An overlay is hidden or is below the video source. | Check source visibility and move the Image, Text, or Browser source above VLC Video in the Sources list. OBS Sources Guide |
| YouTube is not receiving the OBS feed | The stream URL or key may be missing or incorrect. | Compare the server and key in OBS with the values for the selected stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Keep the key private. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder · Manage live stream settings |
| You cannot start a YouTube live stream | The channel may not meet YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements. | Check verification and whether the channel has had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube live streaming tips |
| The stream is unstable or unhealthy | The selected settings may not suit the upload connection, or the stream has not been tested. | Review YouTube’s settings table for the target resolution and frame rate, choose a sustainable bitrate, test, and monitor stream health. YouTube encoder settings |
When VLC’s own logo overlay is enough
VLC also documents a logo effect at Tools → Effects and Filters → Video Effects → Overlay, with image selection, position, and opacity controls. That attaches the logo to VLC’s video output. For a separate ticker and easier positioning of multiple elements, OBS source layering is the more complete approach. VideoLAN: How to add a logo

Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Having the technical ability to play a playlist does not establish that you have permission to broadcast its contents or that the stream qualifies for monetization. Before going live, check the rights and licenses for every video and audio track, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies. Avoid assuming that crediting an owner or using a short excerpt automatically gives permission.

If the goal is a YouTube channel that stays live around the clock, OBS and VLC require the computer running the scene and a working home connection to remain available. StreamNeo is a cloud service from Yorker Media that plays uploaded videos on YouTube; it does not stream from a camera. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud loops the uploads, so nothing has to stay on at home; it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month.
