VLC’s Loop control repeats a video locally; it does not make that video a YouTube Live broadcast. To broadcast prerecorded gaming footage, loop or play the authorized media in VLC, route its playback into compatible encoding software, and send that encoder’s feed to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key. The precise routing steps depend on your VLC version and encoder, so there is no verified universal VLC menu path to give here.
First, choose what you mean by “loop”

YouTube describes encoders as a way to stream gameplay and overlays. VLC can serve as the local media player in this workflow, but the platform’s encoder setup—not VLC’s playback loop by itself—is what sends a live feed to YouTube. Loop a gaming video for yourself on YouTube
On desktop, right-click the YouTube video player and choose Loop. For a playlist, use the loop control in the playlist box to repeat the playlist. YouTube also documents a Repeat control for TV and console playback; controls may vary by device. These controls repeat playback for the viewer, not a live stream. Broadcast a looping VLC video as a YouTube Live stream
The workflow has three parts: media playback, routing, and live ingestion. VLC plays the file or playlist; compatible encoding software captures or receives that playback; YouTube receives the encoded live feed. The official VLC documentation landing page points to user documentation but does not establish a current, version-specific procedure for looping a desktop playlist and routing it into an encoder. 1. Prepare footage you have the right to broadcast
- Check the game publisher’s rules and the rights for music, cutscenes, overlays, and any other third-party material in the recording.
- Use footage that is suitable to repeat. If your file has a visible ending, black frames, or a long pause, viewers will see those each time it loops.
- Keep the media on the computer running VLC and test that it plays through the intended repeat before setting up the live event.
2. Set up YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube’s live-stream setup and obtain the stream URL and stream key for the event, following YouTube’s stream settings instructions.
- Enter those details in the compatible encoder you plan to use. The URL tells the encoder where to send its feed; the key identifies the destination stream.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it on screen, post it, or share it. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live settings and update the encoder.
3. Play and route VLC’s output into the encoder
- Open the authorized video or playlist in VLC and enable repeat or loop using the controls available in your installed version.
- Configure your encoder to receive VLC playback, whether through a supported media source or an audio/video capture route available on your system. The exact source type and controls depend on the operating system, VLC build, and encoder; confirm them in the documentation for those specific versions rather than relying on a guessed universal click path.
- Check both picture and sound in the encoder preview. Confirm that the game footage is visible, audio is present at a sensible level, and the video resumes as expected when it reaches the end.
4. Start the broadcast and monitor it
- Start sending the feed from the encoder to YouTube, then check YouTube’s preview before starting the public live event.
- Start the event in the live control room when the preview is correct. Keep VLC and the encoder running and monitor the stream for playback, audio, and connection problems.
For channel eligibility and account-specific restrictions, check YouTube’s current live-streaming access requirements. YouTube’s guidance says live streaming requires channel verification and no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days; it also says streamers must be at least 16. Verify the current requirements for your channel before scheduling a broadcast.
Copyright and live-stream interruptions
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects content that violates its rules, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate the broadcast. A license alone may not prevent an interruption: YouTube says the rights owner may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID. Review YouTube’s guidance on live-stream content restrictions and resolve any required allowlisting before going live.

Keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running 24/7
For a continuous prerecorded stream, options include running local encoding software such as OBS or using a cloud streaming service. YouTube lists OBS as open-source live-streaming software and Gyre as a cloud-based tool for continuous prerecorded-video streams in its encoder directory. Common problems and fixes
- The video loops in VLC, but YouTube is not live: VLC’s loop only repeats playback locally. Confirm that an encoder is receiving the playback and sending it to YouTube with the correct stream URL and key.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Recheck the stream URL and key in the encoder. If the key was exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.
- The live preview is black or silent: Check that the encoder is capturing the correct VLC output and that VLC is playing the file. Verify video and audio in the encoder preview before starting the event.
- The stream is interrupted after it starts: Check YouTube’s live control room for a policy notice. Third-party content detection can interrupt a broadcast; confirm permissions and any required Content ID allowlisting.
- The setup instructions do not match your screen: VLC routing options vary with version and operating system. Consult documentation for your exact VLC and encoder versions rather than applying unverified menu names or command-line flags.
