How to Loop MP4 Videos with MediaMTX for a YouTube Live Stream

FFmpeg can loop an MP4 into a MediaMTX path, but that localhost RTMP example is not YouTube’s ingest address. Learn how to configure the separate YouTube publishing leg and check compatibility.

To loop an MP4 indefinitely, FFmpeg can publish it to a MediaMTX path with -stream_loop -1. That documented command sends the video to MediaMTX—not directly to YouTube. YouTube Live has its own ingest URL and stream key, so connecting the two ends requires a relay configuration beyond the documented FFmpeg-to-MediaMTX example.

How the MediaMTX-to-YouTube workflow fits together

Think of this as two separate connections: FFmpeg sends the looping file to MediaMTX, and a publishing path must then send a feed to YouTube’s ingest server. The example below documents the first connection only. MediaMTX’s reviewed FFmpeg guidance does not provide an official end-to-end relay command for forwarding that path to YouTube, so do not use the localhost address in the example as YouTube’s server URL.

MediaMTX is a media server that can receive streams on configured paths. Its basic usage documentation explains paths and how clients connect; its RTMP publishing documentation covers RTMP clients. The precise relay arrangement depends on the topology and tools you choose.

Loop an MP4 into MediaMTX with FFmpeg

1. Prepare the server and file

Install and run MediaMTX, install FFmpeg, and make the MP4 available to the machine running FFmpeg. MediaMTX’s Publish with FFmpeg page documents this RTMP example:

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i file.mp4 -c copy -f flv rtmp://localhost:1935/mystream

Replace file.mp4 with the path to your file. The destination rtmp://localhost:1935/mystream means the MediaMTX server on the same machine, listening on its default RTMP port, at the path mystream. If MediaMTX runs on another machine, the destination must address that server and its configured path instead; make sure the network and server configuration allow the connection.

2. Understand what the flags do

  • -re reads the input at its real-time pace, rather than sending the file as fast as possible.
  • -stream_loop -1 asks FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely.
  • -i file.mp4 selects the input file.
  • -c copy copies the existing audio and video streams without re-encoding them.
  • -f flv selects the FLV container used for this RTMP publishing example.

Keep the FFmpeg process running while you want it to publish. Stopping it ends this publishing leg of the workflow.

3. Choose a MediaMTX publishing protocol your setup supports

The MediaMTX FFmpeg page documents both RTMP and RTSP publishing examples and describes RTSP as its recommended FFmpeg method. Choose the protocol that fits your configured MediaMTX input and the next component in your setup; these choices do not, by themselves, create a YouTube relay. See the official FFmpeg publishing examples for the documented commands.

Configure YouTube Live separately

1. Get the YouTube ingest details

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the stream’s settings into the encoder or publishing tool that will send the feed to YouTube. Treat the key as a credential: do not share it publicly.
  3. If you choose encrypted RTMP transport, use the RTMPS URL. YouTube says to reveal it from the lock icon in stream settings; see its RTMPS instructions.
  4. Start sending the feed, wait for it to appear in Live Control Room’s preview, check stream health, then select Go live when ready. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions for the controls available to your stream.

The stream URL and key belong in the YouTube publishing leg—not in place of the MediaMTX localhost destination. The reviewed documentation does not establish a single official command joining these two legs; use a relay or encoder arrangement whose documentation explicitly supports the path you choose.

Match the outgoing feed to YouTube’s ingest guidance

YouTube’s live encoder settings vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. Use the bitrate row for your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s current table rather than applying one number to every feed.

YouTube recommends RTMPS. When choosing between RTMP and RTMPS for the YouTube leg, prefer RTMPS if you want encryption in transit and your encoder supports it. That transport choice is separate from whether FFmpeg publishes into MediaMTX over RTMP or RTSP.

Check MP4 compatibility before relying on stream copy

The example’s -c copy does not convert codecs or alter the encoded tracks. An MP4 container alone does not guarantee that its video and audio tracks match the ingest profile you intend to send to YouTube. Inspect the file’s codecs and compare them with the chosen YouTube settings; then verify the actual preview and stream-health messages. If the tracks do not fit, use a suitable re-encoding workflow instead of assuming stream copy will make them compatible.

No specific file or setup is guaranteed by the documented example. YouTube recommends testing with representative movement and audio, checking the preview and stream health, and monitoring audio and video quality during the stream. Its encoder help says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived when ended; do not assume an indefinitely long stream will be archived as one continuous video.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • FFmpeg cannot connect to MediaMTX: Confirm MediaMTX is running, the address and RTMP port are reachable, and the path is correct. If the server is remote, localhost points to the FFmpeg machine, not the remote server.
  • The file plays locally but YouTube rejects or flags the feed: Check the actual audio and video codecs, bitrate mode, keyframe interval, resolution, and frame rate against the selected YouTube settings. Stream copy will not fix a mismatch.
  • YouTube has no preview: Confirm the YouTube server URL and stream key are configured in the YouTube-facing encoder or relay, and that this component is actually receiving the MediaMTX path. The MediaMTX example destination is not YouTube’s ingest address.
  • Preview appears but stream health reports problems: Review YouTube’s health messages and adjust the outgoing feed to match the relevant codec and bitrate guidance. Test with representative motion and audio before relying on the stream.
  • The video does not loop: Check that the FFmpeg command includes -stream_loop -1 and that the FFmpeg process remains active.
  • You need a different relay topology: Check MediaMTX’s documentation for the relevant publishing, reading, and configuration features, including hooks. The reviewed pages do not specify a universal MediaMTX-to-YouTube forwarding command.
