To keep a prerecorded museum exhibit video playing on YouTube Live, create an encoder-based livestream in YouTube Studio, then run FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1 before the input file. That input option tells FFmpeg to repeat the file indefinitely. Test the feed privately first, check YouTube’s stream-health messages, and confirm that the museum has the necessary rights for every part of the broadcast.
1. Check livestream access and prepare the YouTube event

Confirm that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube says first-time livestream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the event. See YouTube’s livestream eligibility and setup guidance.

In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select an encoder-based stream. Set the event’s visibility, and retrieve the stream URL and stream key associated with that stream. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe this workflow.

Treat the stream key as a password: do not put a real key in a public post, shared script, screenshot, or recording. If it is exposed, reset it in the stream settings. YouTube explains stream-key management at Manage live stream settings.

2. Loop one exhibit video with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop option applies to an input; -1 means repeat indefinitely. Put it before the corresponding -i input. The following is a configuration example, not a tested, universal command:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i exhibit.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -f flv "<YouTube ingest URL>/<STREAM_KEY>"Replace the placeholders with the ingest destination and key shown for your YouTube stream. Keep the actual key private. The example uses H.264 video, AAC audio, and FLV output, but the right output protocol, codecs, bitrate, frame rate, audio handling, and any scaling depend on the stream configuration, source file, installed FFmpeg build, and available compute. Consult the current YouTube stream settings and FFmpeg documentation, then validate the command with your own media and FFmpeg installation.

The -re input option in this example reads the file at its native rate rather than pushing it as fast as possible. It is a starting configuration, not a guarantee that every source file or system will behave identically.
3. Choose output settings and test the feed
Match the encoder to the source and the institution’s stable upload capacity; the highest available resolution is not automatically the safest choice. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with an interval no longer than four seconds. It supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 in applicable configurations; codec and protocol compatibility matter. For ordinary SDR, YouTube specifies Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth. HDR requires different settings. The same guidance recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion.

Start with an unlisted or otherwise private test event in the Live Control Room.

Check the preview for the expected picture, framing, aspect ratio, and audio. Listen for clipping, silence, or unexpected soundtrack content.

Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages while the encoder runs. If health is poor, reduce output quality or bitrate to a level the upload connection can sustain, then test again. YouTube’s livestream tips recommend testing and monitoring the feed.

If the museum also records locally, verify the resulting archive before relying on it as a preservation copy.

4. Handle multiple exhibit files carefully
The single-file loop above does not define how to combine a sequence of separate videos. A playlist or concat workflow can introduce gaps, audio discontinuities, incompatible codecs, or changes in aspect ratio. Choose and test a method against the actual files; inspect transitions and audio continuity in a private event before scheduling a public broadcast.
5. Confirm collection and broadcast rights
Possessing a media file or displaying an object in a gallery does not by itself establish permission to livestream every component. Review the rights for video, still images, artwork reproductions, narration, music, and third-party footage. Confirm permitted platforms, territories, broadcast duration, and whether an archived replay may remain available. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights for live content on Google services, including relevant music licensing rights. This platform requirement does not settle the rights status of any particular museum item or jurisdiction.
6. Decide where FFmpeg should run
A local workstation is straightforward to test, but a continuous stream depends on that machine, its power, network connection, and someone’s ability to monitor or restart the process. A continuously available server or cloud machine avoids relying on a staff workstation, but introduces hosting cost, institutional IT approval, and responsibilities for securing the stream key and monitoring the encoder. In either setup, confirm stable upload bandwidth and an operational plan for recovery before promising continuous playback.
