YouTube Live provides a primary and a backup ingestion address, and its API describes sending the same program to both at the same time. To use two encoders for an internet radio station, configure one for each address, feed both the same station program, then test the actual handoff behavior: YouTube’s documentation does not guarantee automatic failover for every pair of independently operated encoders.
What two-encoder redundancy means on YouTube
A YouTube stream can have a primary ingestion destination and an optional backup destination. The backup is intended to receive a simultaneous second copy of the content sent to the primary. This provides two ingest paths, but it is not a blanket promise that YouTube will automatically switch cleanly between any two encoder machines if one stops.
For radio, each encoder needs the same station program audio and a video output suitable for the stream. YouTube’s general encoder setup supports external audio/video hardware, but does not prescribe a radio-specific static-image configuration. Choose an architecture before configuring

No particular encoder model is established as supporting simultaneous dual output in the sources cited here. Before buying equipment, check the manufacturer’s documentation for dual-output capability, protocol support, and compatibility with your audio/program feed.

Set up the primary and backup feeds
- Enable live streaming if needed. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream. If this is the channel’s first live broadcast, enable live streaming first; YouTube notes initial enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- Copy the stream details. In the stream setup, copy the stream URL and stream key. Enter the URL in the encoder’s server or RTMP server field and the key in its stream-key field. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Assign the primary destination. Configure the primary encoder output to use YouTube’s primary ingestion address.
- Assign the backup destination. Configure the second encoder, or a second output from the same encoder, to use YouTube’s backup ingestion address if the selected encoder workflow supports it. The two feeds should carry the same station program content simultaneously.
- Match supported settings. Confirm both encoder paths use a protocol and configuration accepted by the devices and YouTube destination. The available controls vary by encoder; YouTube does not provide one universal menu-by-menu procedure for two separate encoder boxes.
- Check the preview before going public. Start the encoder feed and inspect preview and status in Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview and then select Go live when ready.
- Test both paths off-air or privately. Confirm the program reaches YouTube, then deliberately interrupt the primary path and observe what happens. Do not assume the backup takes over as intended until this has been tested in your exact configuration.
RTMP, RTMPS, and HLS considerations
YouTube’s API distinguishes primary and backup ingestion addresses and includes RTMP/RTMPS and HLS fields. Use the protocol and addresses supplied for your stream, and confirm both are supported by your encoder workflow.
If you use HLS
YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies a segment duration of 1 to 4 seconds, TS segment format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption other than HTTPS. A backup server URL can be copied from Live Control Room when an HLS stream key is selected. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP, so account for that if low delay matters to your station.

YouTube’s HLS API guide illustrates redundant ingestion with a primary URL using the a.upload.youtube.com hostname and copy=0, and a second copy using b.upload.youtube.com and copy=1. The copy parameter must differ between primary and backup URLs to avoid corrupting the stream. These are documentation examples, not substitutes for the actual URLs provided for your channel. Test and maintain the redundancy
- Verify that each encoder can independently reach its assigned YouTube destination.
- Confirm both paths carry the same station program and that audio is present in the Live Control Room preview.
- Test a controlled primary interruption while monitoring the live status and output. Record whether and how the stream recovers.
- Repeat the test after changing encoders, protocols, stream configuration, or audio routing; those changes can affect behavior.
- Keep the stream key private and update both encoder configurations if you replace or rotate it.
The test result is specific to your encoder equipment, configuration, and YouTube workflow. YouTube’s documentation establishes primary and backup ingest destinations, not a universal failover guarantee for every independently operated encoder pair.

Troubleshooting common setup problems
