How to Loop Prerecorded Videos on YouTube Live from Linux

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For one prerecorded video, the simplest Linux setup is OBS Studio: add a Media Source, select the file, and enable Loop. For a sequence of files, use OBS’s VLC Video source with Loop Playlist enabled. In either case, OBS sends the video to YouTube Live using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.

What you need

  • A Linux computer with OBS Studio installed.
  • A video file that your installed OBS build can decode, or VLC installed as well if you plan to use an OBS VLC Video playlist.
  • A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so arrange access ahead of your intended broadcast.
  • A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the encoder settings you choose.
  • Permission to broadcast the video and its audio. The streaming setup does not grant copyright or other rights to the material.

OBS’s installation guidance documents an Ubuntu package route and recommends Flathub for non-Ubuntu distributions; follow the instructions appropriate to your distribution at OBS Linux Installation. Package availability and installation steps can vary by distribution.

Loop one video with OBS Media Source

  1. Open OBS Studio and choose or create a scene for the broadcast.
  2. In the Sources panel, select +, then choose Media Source.
  3. Name the source if desired, then select OK.
  4. In the Media Source properties, enable Local File and browse to the video.
  5. Enable Loop, then select OK. OBS restarts the file when playback reaches its end.
  6. Check the canvas to confirm the video is framed as intended. Watch the audio meters while it plays, and make sure the scene includes any other sources you need.

OBS documents Media Source looping and common supported formats in its Media Sources guide. A format appearing on a general list does not guarantee that every codec or encoding variant will work in your installed build. Play the exact file in OBS and confirm both picture and sound before going live.

Loop a playlist of videos

For multiple files, use OBS’s VLC Video source rather than adding each file as a separate Media Source.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Install VLC for Linux. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source to appear; OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
  2. In OBS, select + in the Sources panel and choose VLC Video.
  3. Add the video files to the playlist in the source properties.
  4. Enable Loop Playlist to repeat the playlist after the last item. Set other playlist options, such as shuffle, only if they suit the intended order.
  5. Confirm each file plays and that transitions between files behave as expected before starting the YouTube stream.

OBS documents playlist playback and looping in its Media Sources guide. The VLC source is useful when the broadcast should move through multiple files; for one repeating file, Media Source is the simpler choice.

Set the video and audio output

Before connecting to YouTube, open Settings in OBS and review the output configuration. Resolution, frame rate and bitrate are set in the encoder for a YouTube Live Control Room stream. Choose values appropriate to the video, the content’s motion, and your available upload capacity; there is no single bitrate that is right for every resolution and frame rate. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for viewer delivery.

Check that the source fills the canvas as intended, the audio meters respond, and the correct audio is being sent. OBS’s Quick Start Guide walks through adding sources, setting audio and checking output, and recommends making a short test before a first stream. Do not assume that a long-running broadcast will be reliable simply because a short test worked: the host, network, media files and OBS configuration all matter.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a live stream or schedule one. If this is your channel’s first live broadcast, allow for YouTube’s stated enablement time of up to 24 hours.
  2. Open the stream’s settings and copy its server URL and stream key.
  3. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select the YouTube service if available, then enter the stream URL and key. If your OBS setup presents a server field, use the URL from YouTube rather than guessing one.
  4. Keep the stream key private. Someone who obtains it may be able to send content to your stream.
  5. Start the encoder from OBS. Watch the preview and stream health information in Live Control Room. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the preview, then select Go live in Live Control Room when you are ready to begin.

YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes creating or scheduling the stream, entering its URL and key in an encoder, and starting the encoder. A stream sent from OBS is not necessarily live to viewers merely because the encoder is running: scheduled streams require the Live Control Room handoff.

Prefer RTMPS when available

YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. In Live Control Room, reveal the RTMPS URL in the stream settings and use that URL with the stream key if your encoder supports it. If you encounter an SSL-related error, YouTube’s RTMPS guidance recommends checking that the URL uses rtmps; it also notes that specifying port 443 can help with some SSL errors.

Copyright, archives and broadcast checks

  • Confirm rights first. Having a file on your computer does not establish permission to stream its footage, soundtrack or other material. Check the applicable licenses and YouTube policies before broadcasting.
  • Test the complete chain. Check picture, sound, looping or playlist order, encoder output and the YouTube preview. A short test can reveal problems before an audience is waiting.
  • Plan for the archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. This is an operational note from YouTube Help; it is not a guarantee that every stream will be available as an archive in every circumstance.
  • Keep the machine and connection available. In this local OBS workflow, playback and encoding run on the Linux host. If the machine sleeps, OBS stops, or the connection fails, the outgoing stream can be interrupted.

Troubleshooting

The video does not repeat

For a single file, reopen the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled. For multiple files, confirm that the source is VLC Video and Loop Playlist is enabled. Test playback through the end of a file or playlist rather than assuming the setting took effect.

VLC Video is missing from the Sources menu

Install VLC and restart OBS. Check that the VLC and OBS architectures match: OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.

The source is blank, or audio is missing

Confirm the selected file path, then test the exact file in the installed OBS build. Decoding support can vary by build and codec. Check that the source is visible in the scene, that the audio meters move during playback, and that OBS is sending the intended audio.

YouTube does not receive the stream

Recheck the server URL and stream key against the current Live Control Room settings. If using RTMPS, verify the URL begins with rtmps. For a scheduled stream, wait until YouTube shows a preview, then select Go live to complete the handoff.

The broadcast stops when unattended

This method relies on the Linux computer, OBS and its network connection staying available. Check power and sleep settings, the network connection and OBS status. The cited setup guides explain how to configure a stream; they do not promise uninterrupted operation.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps prerecorded video live without leaving a Linux computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. It streams to YouTube, not from a camera.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home: playback runs in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to remain on.
  • Any quality up to 4K 60fps, as uploaded, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card required.
