There is no universal winner in the Raspberry Pi vs VPS cost for looping prerecorded videos on YouTube. A Pi has an upfront hardware cost plus electricity and depends on your home power and internet; a VPS has a recurring fee and may charge for outbound traffic. The cheaper option over a year depends on your local electricity tariff, measured Pi power use, whether your video can be sent without re-encoding, and the VPS plan’s transfer allowance. A low advertised VPS price is a starting point—not proof that the plan can encode or reliably carry your particular 24/7 stream.
What belongs in a fair cost comparison?
Compare both setups over the same period, such as 12 months, and include the costs and effort required to keep the stream running—not just the price of a board or the VPS headline rate.
| Cost or factor | Raspberry Pi at home | VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Initial cost | Board, suitable power supply, boot storage, cooling or enclosure if needed, cables, and possible replacement allowance. Check local retail prices. | Usually no local streaming computer to buy; check whether storage or an IPv4 address adds a charge on the chosen plan. |
| Recurring cost | Measured average wall power × streaming hours × local electricity tariff. Add an internet-plan upgrade only if the stream creates an incremental charge. | Selected plan price plus any outbound transfer over the included allowance and any applicable storage or IPv4 charges. |
| Connection and power | Depends on home internet and electricity remaining available. | The sending process runs in a data center rather than through your home connection, but still needs configuration, monitoring, and recovery arrangements. |
| Operator effort | Set up the sender and handle device, connection, or power interruptions. | Set up and maintain the server process, protect the stream key, monitor it, and recover it if it stops. |
| Encoding requirement | A compatible file may be relayed without re-encoding; real-time encoding makes the Pi’s compute capability important. | The same distinction applies: a low-cost plan is not automatically suitable for real-time encoding. |
How much does a Raspberry Pi setup really cost?
Include the whole hardware basket
For a 12-month estimate, add the board, boot media, power supply, and any cooling, enclosure, cables, or replacement allowance your setup needs. The Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation recommends a 27 W USB-C supply for Pi 5 and a 15 W USB-C supply for Pi 4 Model B/Pi 400; those are power-supply specifications, not the amount either computer necessarily draws while streaming. Check the [Raspberry Pi documentation](https://www.raspberrypi.com/documentation/computers/getting-started.html) and local prices for the components you would actually buy.
Measure electricity instead of guessing
Measure the setup’s average wall draw while it is doing the intended streaming workload. Then calculate: average watts ÷ 1,000 × hours operating × electricity price per kWh. For a 24/7 stream, use the hours in your chosen comparison period. Do not substitute the supply’s 27 W or 15 W rating for a wall measurement. No reliable figure is established for a Pi’s power consumption while looping and streaming this specific workload.

Price context can change
Raspberry Pi announced memory-related price increases affecting some Pi 4 and Pi 5 products on 2 February 2026. The announcement also said the 1 GB Pi 5 variant launched at $45 in December and that some 1 GB products were protected from those increases. That manufacturer announcement is context, not a current local price for a complete streaming setup; check availability and retailer pricing where you live.

| DigitalOcean Basic example | vCPU and memory | Included transfer | SSD | Listed monthly price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Smallest example | 1 vCPU, 512 MiB | 500 GiB | 10 GiB | $4/month |
| Next example | 1 vCPU, 1 GiB | 1,000 GiB | 25 GiB | $6/month |
| Larger example | 1 vCPU, 2 GiB | 2,000 GiB | not stated in the cited example | $12/month |
These are DigitalOcean prices, not a recommendation or performance test. The smallest listed plan is a price floor; it does not establish that a plan can encode your file in real time, sustain your chosen workload, or meet every provider’s terms. If you need to transcode, select compute based on measured encoding needs and test it before relying on it.
Budget for outbound transfer
DigitalOcean’s bandwidth documentation, last verified 14 September 2026, says Droplets include an outbound transfer allowance, additional outbound transfer costs $0.01/GiB, inbound transfer is free, and allowances are pooled at team level. Provider accounting and plans differ, so confirm how the provider you choose counts the stream and whether pooled allowances apply.

Estimate the bandwidth for a continuous YouTube stream
Bandwidth can make an apparently cheap VPS more expensive. YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30. At a constant 5 Mbps, the arithmetic is approximately 54 GB per 24-hour day and 1.62 TB per 30 days, in decimal units and before protocol overhead. This is calculated from the recommended bitrate, not a separately published YouTube traffic statistic.
For comparison, the cited DigitalOcean examples include 500 GiB or 1,000 GiB of transfer. A full month at the 5 Mbps calculation exceeds either allowance if all outbound stream traffic is billable against it. Check the provider’s accounting units and rules, your actual bitrate, and your selected plan before buying. To estimate another configuration, multiply bitrate in bits per second by streaming seconds, divide by eight, then convert the resulting bytes to the units the provider bills.

Does the video need to be re-encoded?
This is a key cost and hardware distinction. If the prerecorded file’s codec, resolution, frame rate, audio, and container are compatible with the stream you send, a lightweight relay may be possible. If the workflow must encode or transcode continuously, CPU or GPU capability matters on either a Pi or a VPS. The available sources do not benchmark a specific Pi or VPS for this job, so test the intended file and configuration rather than inferring performance from price or specifications alone.

- Enable live streaming in advance. YouTube says first-time live-stream enabling can take up to 24 hours.
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and copy its stream URL and key into your encoder. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send to your stream.
- Choose a supported ingest protocol and matching output settings. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP video protocol.” Its settings guidance also supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps.
- Use constant bitrate and the values for your intended format. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Its H.264 table lists 5 Mbps recommended for 1080p30 (range 5–14 Mbps) and 3 Mbps recommended for 720p30 (range 3–8 Mbps). These figures are not universal settings for every codec, resolution, or frame rate; use the matching row for your format and leave upload headroom.
- Test before depending on the stream, then monitor stream health. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring during a live event. For a 24/7 setup, arrange a way to notice when sending stops and to restart or recover it.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous 24/7 stream is longer than that threshold, so do not assume a single uninterrupted broadcast will be archived in full.

Which setup is cheaper for your situation?
A Pi may suit a compatible, low-effort local setup
A Pi can be worth considering if you already own the hardware, can stream the file without re-encoding, have suitable home power and upload connectivity, and are willing to maintain a device that stays on. Calculate electricity from a wall measurement and include only incremental internet costs. Its cost advantage cannot be assumed without your local parts prices, tariff, and measured draw.
A VPS may suit a sender that should not depend on home internet
A VPS takes the home computer and home connection out of the sending path, but it is not maintenance-free: you still need a configured process, protected key, monitoring, and recovery plan. Compare the complete plan cost—including transfer overages—with your Pi’s measured operating cost. A VPS price alone does not establish that it can encode or satisfy a provider’s rules for your workload.
Make the comparison with your own inputs
- Pick one period for both options, such as 12 months.
- For the Pi, total the required local hardware and add measured electricity cost; add any incremental internet charge.
- For the VPS, total the chosen plan charges and estimate billable outbound transfer at your actual bitrate, checking the provider’s allowance and accounting policy.
- Decide whether re-encoding is needed. If it is, validate sustained encoding performance on the exact configuration.
- Compare the setup and recovery work you are willing to do. Reliability has a real operational cost, but downtime and attention do not have a universal dollar value.

Quick Recap
Problems to check before relying on a 24/7 loop
- YouTube does not show the stream as live: confirm live streaming is enabled, the correct stream URL and key were entered, and the sender is running. First-time enabling may take up to 24 hours.
- The ingest disconnects or reports poor health: verify the sending connection has headroom above the selected bitrate, check the encoder output and keyframe interval, and use YouTube’s stream-health monitoring. Test the configuration before leaving it unattended.
- The Pi struggles during output: determine whether the file is being re-encoded. If so, test that workload on the specific Pi rather than assuming the model can sustain it; if possible, use a compatible file without real-time transcoding.
- The VPS bill is higher than expected: compare actual outbound traffic with the included allowance, confirm whether the provider pools allowances or charges overage, and check whether the selected bitrate or plan changed.
- The stream stops after a home outage: a local Pi depends on home power and internet. Decide how you will detect the outage and restart the sender; a VPS removes those home dependencies from the sending path but still requires server-side monitoring and recovery.
- The stream runs but the content is not suitable to broadcast: make sure you have the rights to the video and audio and follow YouTube’s live-stream and monetization policies. Repeating content does not by itself establish that you have permission or that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization requirements. Review YouTube’s current policies before scheduling a loop.
