You can loop a prepared Tamil music video indefinitely by publishing it from FFmpeg to a MediaMTX RTSP path, then forwarding that path to YouTube Live over RTMPS. You need a media file suitable for the stream, FFmpeg, MediaMTX, a YouTube Live Control Room ingest URL and stream key, and the rights to broadcast the recording. Use the current ingest details shown in your account rather than copying a URL from a tutorial. This workflow does not grant music rights: a license may not prevent interruption unless the rights holder also allowlists your channel in Content ID.

Before you start: prepare the video and clear the rights

  • Use a recording you are authorized to broadcast on YouTube Live. Tamil music can involve distinct rights in the composition and the sound recording; crediting the artist, paying for a subscription, or owning a copy does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast.
  • Check whether the rights holder must add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content; a match may cause a placeholder image, warning, interruption, or termination. YouTube says even licensed content may need allowlisting to avoid interruption (YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams).
  • Make sure the file has both audio and video tracks. MediaMTX warns that YouTube silently rejects video-only streams.
  • Have FFmpeg and MediaMTX installed and running on the same machine for the local example below. The documented command and configuration are illustrative; they have not been tested against every software version or media file. Check the current documentation for your installed version.

How to loop an MP4 forever with FFmpeg

MediaMTX’s official FFmpeg guide gives this RTSP publishing example (MediaMTX: Publish with FFmpeg):

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i file.mp4 -c copy -f rtsp rtsp://localhost:8554/mystream

Replace file.mp4 with the path to your prepared file. Keep the output path mystream consistent with the MediaMTX forwarding configuration you will create next.

  • -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely.
  • -re reads the file at its natural rate, rather than sending it as fast as the machine can process it.
  • -c copy copies the existing audio and video streams without transcoding. It does not make incompatible codecs compatible; if YouTube or the next stage cannot accept the source streams, you need an appropriate encode or remux workflow.
  • -f rtsp publishes the input using RTSP to the local MediaMTX server.

MediaMTX describes RTSP publishing as the recommended approach for FFmpeg: “The recommended way is acting as a RTSP client.”

How to send FFmpeg to MediaMTX, then forward to YouTube

1. Set up a MediaMTX forwarding path

Configure MediaMTX to receive the RTSP publisher on the path mystream and forward that path to YouTube. MediaMTX’s YouTube example uses an RTMPS destination with the ingest URL and stream key separated by # (MediaMTX: Forward streams). Follow the configuration syntax for your installed MediaMTX version; the destination has this general form:

rtmps://CURRENT_INGEST_URL#YOUR_STREAM_KEY

Those words in capitals are explanatory placeholders, not a working address. In the actual configuration, use the complete ingest URL and key currently shown in your YouTube Live Control Room, following MediaMTX’s documented forwarding format. Do not put your personal key in shared configuration, screenshots, or logs. If the key is exposed, replace it in Live Control Room.

2. Get the current YouTube ingest details

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room.
  2. Set up or select the broadcast and find its stream settings. Copy the ingest URL and stream key provided for that setup.
  3. Use those current values in MediaMTX’s RTMPS forwarding destination. Do not rely on a static tutorial’s host: MediaMTX notes that its example host reflected what YouTube reported when its documentation was updated.

Keep the key private: it gives software permission to send a live feed to your channel. If YouTube offers multiple ingest options, choose the current RTMPS option for this route. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport (YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

3. Start the publisher and check the path

Start MediaMTX with the forwarding configuration active, then run the FFmpeg command. Confirm in MediaMTX’s logs or its available monitoring interface that the publisher connects to mystream and that the path is being forwarded. Exact screens and log wording depend on the MediaMTX version.

4. Confirm audio and video, then go live

MediaMTX states: “YouTube requires streams to have both a video and an audio track.” Confirm both tracks are present before relying on the broadcast. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream health; if you have not used this setup before, test it before a public broadcast.

Match the stream to YouTube’s ingest guidance

The RTMPS route requires an output YouTube can ingest. YouTube’s published settings are recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular file, encoder, network, or account will work. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264 video with constant bitrate encoding and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings before broadcasting, since platform guidance can change.

Setting YouTube guidance How to apply it
Video codec H.264 for RTMP/RTMPS With -c copy, the source video codec is preserved. Inspect the file and verify it is compatible; otherwise choose a suitable encode workflow.
Bitrate mode Constant bitrate encoding Stream copy does not convert variable-bitrate media into constant bitrate. If the source or delivery needs encoding, configure an encoder accordingly.
Keyframe interval Two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds Stream copy preserves the input’s keyframe cadence. Ensure the source meets the guidance or encode with an appropriate keyframe interval.
Audio codec AAC or MP3 Verify the audio codec and that an audio track is actually present.
Bitrate examples H.264: 5 Mbps recommended at 1080p30; 8 Mbps recommended at 720p30 These are YouTube recommendations for the listed modes, not universal guarantees. Select a bitrate that fits your measured upload capacity.

YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Test the connection, run a private or otherwise appropriate test broadcast, and watch Live Control Room’s stream health during the stream. Reserve upload capacity for other traffic on the connection; a bitrate that approaches the connection’s practical limit can lead to instability.

RTMPS or HLS: choose the protocol before configuring the encoder

Consideration RTMPS HLS
Fit for this workflow The straightforward route shown in MediaMTX’s YouTube forwarding example; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion. A separate ingestion mode, not a drop-in replacement for the RTMPS destination.
Codec use Use codecs supported for RTMP ingestion, such as H.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio under YouTube’s guidance. YouTube identifies HLS for cases including HDR or codecs outside RTMP support; match encoder output to YouTube’s current HLS requirements.
Ingest setup Use the current RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room in the MediaMTX forwarding configuration. YouTube’s HLS guidance uses an HTTPS URL and requires HTTPS POST/PUT. The sources do not establish a complete MediaMTX-to-YouTube HLS recipe for this exact workflow.
Segments and latency No HLS segment or rolling-playlist settings apply. Use TS segments of 1–4 seconds and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. HLS disables YouTube’s ultra-low-latency option and has higher latency.

Choose the ingest protocol and configure the encoder for it; changing the destination alone does not make an RTMPS stream into a valid HLS stream. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and its HLS ingestion guidance for current requirements.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • FFmpeg cannot connect to RTSP: Confirm MediaMTX is running, the configured path matches mystream, and the RTSP address and port match your MediaMTX setup. Check MediaMTX and FFmpeg output for connection errors.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck the current ingest URL and key in Live Control Room, the RTMPS destination format, and MediaMTX’s forward configuration. Never troubleshoot by posting the key publicly.
  • YouTube shows no picture or rejects the feed: Verify that the source has a video track and that its codec and settings are accepted by the chosen ingest protocol. Copying streams does not fix unsupported media.
  • YouTube silently rejects a video-only feed: Check that the file contains an audio track as well as video, as MediaMTX warns this is required.
  • Stream health is poor or the broadcast buffers: Measure upload capacity, lower the configured output bitrate if necessary, and check whether other network use is competing for bandwidth. Test before the public broadcast and monitor health while live.
  • The stream is interrupted despite a license: Contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting for your channel. YouTube’s copyright scanning can affect live streams even when content is licensed.
  • The file will not loop cleanly: The loop command repeats the whole input, but stream copy cannot repair a damaged file, mismatched track duration, or codec/container incompatibility. Inspect and prepare a compatible source, or use an explicitly configured transcode/remux workflow.

Or let it run in the cloud

With the DIY setup above, FFmpeg and MediaMTX need to stay running on a machine with a working connection. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping a channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running, so nothing has to stay on at home. It accepts uploads up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. As with any music broadcast, you still need the rights to stream the recordings. Learn more at StreamNeo or start the free first day.
