It makes sense when you need to route streams between protocols or build a self-managed pipeline. You still need a feed source, a suitable encoder if conversion is required, monitoring and recovery arrangements, and an independent archive for a continuous channel.
What MediaMTX does—and what it does not
MediaMTX describes itself as a ready-to-use, zero-dependency live media server and proxy. It accepts and serves streams across protocols including RTSP, RTMP, HLS, WebRTC, SRT, MPEG-TS, RTP and Media-over-QUIC. It can convert between protocols, forward streams to another server, record to disk in fMP4 or MPEG-TS, play recordings, authenticate clients, expose a control API and Prometheus-compatible metrics, and hot-reload configuration. It is available as a single executable for Linux, Windows and macOS. MediaMTX documentation
Those are useful building blocks for a broadcast pipeline, not evidence that MediaMTX supplies the video, schedules a playlist, encodes any input into a YouTube-ready format, or guarantees continuous availability. A 24/7 setup also relies on the publisher, host, network, credentials, encoder and the operator’s monitoring and recovery plan. The documentation does not establish an uptime figure or automatic failover between sources or YouTube ingest endpoints.
Can MediaMTX send a stream to YouTube?
Yes. MediaMTX’s forwarding guide documents sending a stream to YouTube using RTMPS, with the destination configured using YouTube’s stream URL and key. YouTube requires both audio and video tracks; a video-only feed may be silently rejected. Treat the URL in any guide example as illustrative: copy the current ingest URL from YouTube Live Control Room rather than assuming a published endpoint remains current. MediaMTX is the router or forwarder in this arrangement. If the source needs transcoding or filtering to meet the destination’s requirements, the MediaMTX guide points to an FFmpeg-based workflow. Do not assume forwarding alone will turn an arbitrary input into compliant encoder output.
Configure the YouTube feed correctly
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Choose output quality to suit the available upload connection, test with representative motion and audio, and check YouTube’s stream-health feedback. YouTube encoder settings

| Output example | YouTube’s recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps, H.264 | 6–17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 5–14 Mbps |
These are the ranges on YouTube Help’s retrieved encoder-settings page; that page does not state a publication year. Other codec and resolution combinations have their own ranges, so use the table on the linked page for the output you select. The upload connection must support the chosen bitrate consistently, with room for normal network variation.
Set up the YouTube destination
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its current stream URL and stream key.
- Configure a MediaMTX forwarding destination using RTMPS and those values, following the MediaMTX forwarding guide. Keep the key private; reset it in Live Control Room if it is exposed.
- Make sure the feed arriving at the forwarding path contains both audio and video. If it needs conversion or filtering, add the FFmpeg workflow described by MediaMTX rather than expecting the server to transcode it automatically.
- Start the feed, inspect YouTube’s preview for picture and sound, then go live from Live Control Room. Monitor stream health during the broadcast.
Exact configuration syntax can vary with the MediaMTX version and the source protocol. Follow the current configuration reference for the version you deploy; do not paste a stream key into a public configuration repository or expose it in logs. MediaMTX configuration reference

Is MediaMTX a good fit for 24/7 operation?
It can be a useful component if your pipeline needs protocol bridging, forwarding, recording or controlled stream access and you are prepared to operate the surrounding system. MediaMTX documents persistent or always-available paths when a publisher is offline, but that is not the same as proving that a particular YouTube broadcast will recover cleanly from every source, host, network or destination failure.
Before relying on a channel, test the entire path with the actual source and representative content. Check audio and video at YouTube, observe stream-health feedback, and verify what happens when the publisher or host restarts and when the connection is interrupted. Configure and test any recovery or failover behavior you need; the feature list alone does not establish that a deployment switches sources or ingest endpoints automatically.

Security and browser playback
MediaMTX documents authentication through internal users, an external HTTP server or JWT authentication. Restrict who can publish to the relevant path and protect the YouTube stream key. YouTube’s recommendation of RTMPS concerns the ingest connection. Separately, MediaMTX’s browser-playback guidance says HLS generally has higher latency than WebRTC but tends to have fewer connectivity problems; that comparison is about playback from MediaMTX, not YouTube ingest. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous 24/7 broadcast therefore should not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive as its only recording. MediaMTX can record streams to disk in fMP4 or MPEG-TS, but you remain responsible for storage capacity, retention and recovering recordings after a failure. MediaMTX versus other ways to keep YouTube live
For a YouTube-only 24/7 stream of uploaded video, StreamNeo is the first cloud option to consider: it keeps the channel running without a home computer, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
| Approach | Best suited to | What you must account for |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Running uploaded video as a looping YouTube stream from the cloud | It is a managed YouTube service for uploaded videos, not camera streaming. Each slot includes 10 GB storage, pooled across active slots; the service price depends on duration. |
| MediaMTX in your own pipeline | Routing or bridging a live feed between protocols, with optional recording and access controls | You provide and operate the source, host, network, encoder or FFmpeg conversion when needed, recovery, monitoring and archive plan. |
| Direct encoder-to-YouTube | A simpler pipeline when the source encoder can publish directly in a suitable format | Whether it fits depends on the encoder and source. The reviewed documentation provides no benchmark or measured reliability comparison against MediaMTX. |
For a self-managed setup, judge MediaMTX by whether you need its routing and server functions—not by an unsupported uptime comparison. Check protocol compatibility, whether conversion is needed, how publishing access is protected, how recordings are retained, and which restart or failover behaviors you have actually tested.
Costs and practical trade-offs
The MediaMTX documentation identifies software capabilities but does not establish a hosting price or the hardware needed for a particular deployment. If you self-host it continuously, account for the server or cloud host, storage for recordings, bandwidth, and the time needed to secure, monitor and recover the system. No provider price or hardware minimum is established here.
StreamNeo uses one flat price per slot regardless of uploaded quality, up to 4K 60fps, with no quality tiers. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. The same product is included at every duration; only the billing period changes. One free day is available per account without a card. UPI and cards are accepted in India, with card checkout worldwide; contact support for five or more slots.
