How to Loop Videos on a Raspberry Pi and Stream Them to YouTube

To loop a prerecorded video from a Raspberry Pi into YouTube Live, use FFmpeg to read the file repeatedly and send it to the YouTube ingest server using the broadcast’s stream key. Set the encoder to match the file, the Pi’s capabilities, your upload connection and YouTube’s current requirements; test the stream before relying on it.

What you need to know before you start

This method is for a prerecorded video file stored on the Pi, not a live camera feed. Raspberry Pi’s camera-streaming guide covers a separate camera-originated workflow. For a local file that should repeat, FFmpeg provides an input-loop option and can send the resulting stream to YouTube.

  • A Raspberry Pi with the video file accessible to it.
  • FFmpeg installed and usable on the Pi.
  • A YouTube broadcast configured for encoder streaming, with its server URL and stream key.
  • A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the selected stream settings.

No minimum Pi model, memory amount or guaranteed maximum resolution is established by the official guidance cited here. A board that can play a file may not necessarily encode it at the same resolution and frame rate in real time, so validate your exact hardware and settings.

Configure the YouTube broadcast

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live broadcast and choose the encoder workflow. Follow YouTube’s encoder instructions to obtain the server URL and stream key.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key into your encoder command. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, share it, or include it in a public script or screenshot. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
  3. Use RTMPS when the broadcast and encoder support it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Check the exact protocol and ingest address shown for your broadcast.
  4. Choose video and audio settings that YouTube accepts and that your Pi can sustain. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed four seconds. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the applicable resolution and bitrate recommendations.

Loop a local file with FFmpeg

FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as infinite input looping. The command below shows the workflow shape, not a copy-and-run configuration: replace the placeholders with the values for your file, encoder and YouTube broadcast, and select codecs and bitrate that suit the Pi and connection.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "input.mp4" -f flv "rtmps://<YouTube-ingest>/<stream-key>"

See the FFmpeg command-line documentation for option syntax. Here, -re reads the file at its native rate, which is commonly appropriate when sending a prerecorded file as a live-paced source; -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. The encoding options must specify a compatible video and audio path and output settings. The output is directed to YouTube’s ingest URL, with the broadcast key kept private.

  1. Confirm the file path and that the Pi can read the video and its audio. Start with settings no more demanding than the source and hardware can handle.
  2. Insert the video and audio encoding options, using YouTube’s current settings guidance and the values appropriate to your broadcast. Ensure the chosen encoder supports the codec and RTMPS output you selected.
  3. Replace the ingest and key placeholders with the server URL and stream key shown for that YouTube broadcast. Avoid saving a key in a script that others can access.
  4. Run FFmpeg and check its output for input, encoding or connection errors. In YouTube Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and verify that the broadcast is receiving video and audio before going live.
  5. Monitor FFmpeg and YouTube stream health while the stream runs. If you stop FFmpeg, the outgoing stream stops; start it again with the same configured broadcast details when ready to resume.

Use VLC for playback checks, not as a substitute for streaming

VLC can help confirm that a local file plays and its audio is present, but local playback alone does not package and send the file as a YouTube Live stream. Raspberry Pi’s Raspberry Pi OS media documentation says VLC is included in Raspberry Pi OS Full and uses hardware acceleration there. Raspberry Pi OS Lite does not include VLC by default; the documented headless packages are vlc-bin and vlc-plugin-base. FFmpeg is the documented choice here for looping a file and producing the live output.

Test and monitor the stream

  • Test before the intended broadcast, using representative video movement and sound. Confirm the picture, audio, loop transition and YouTube preview.
  • Check that your upload capacity can sustain the selected bitrate. YouTube recommends checking upload speed and watching stream health and status messages during the broadcast.
  • Use YouTube Live Control Room to check incoming stream status rather than assuming that a running FFmpeg process means the broadcast is healthy.
  • YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not treat that as a guarantee of an archive for a stream that runs 12 hours or longer.

Troubleshooting

YouTube does not receive a signal

Check that the server URL and stream key belong to the selected broadcast, that the key has not been mistyped or replaced, and that the encoder is using the protocol shown in YouTube Studio. Review FFmpeg’s connection output and YouTube’s stream-health messages.

The Pi cannot keep up with encoding

High resolution, frame rate or codec demands may exceed what the particular board can encode in real time. Reduce the output workload and test again; the cited guidance does not establish a universal Pi model-to-quality limit.

Video arrives but audio is missing or wrong

Preview the file locally, confirm that FFmpeg is reading the intended audio stream, and use an audio codec YouTube lists for live encoding, such as AAC or MP3. Verify audio in the YouTube preview before starting a public broadcast.

The stream disconnects or looks unstable

Check the network connection and available upload capacity against the configured bitrate. Watch the YouTube health indicators and FFmpeg output; a connection that cannot sustain the selected settings may require a lower bitrate or a more stable uplink.

The video stops at the end instead of repeating

Verify that -stream_loop -1 appears before the input option for the file and that the command is still running. FFmpeg’s documented value -1 means infinite looping.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

Only stream video and audio you have the rights or permission to use. Repeating a file does not grant permission to rebroadcast it. Review YouTube’s current copyright and channel policies before making a prerecorded loop public, and do not assume that a technically valid stream will necessarily be eligible for monetization or avoid a claim.
