GStreamer’s documented command-line tools cover media pipelines and RTMP output; repeating one ordinary video needs explicit loop control in an application or a separately verified pipeline design. This guide shows how to prepare YouTube’s ingest settings, check your Ubuntu installation, and understand the parts of the pipeline—without presenting an unverified loop command as production-ready.
What you need before starting
- A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and no live-stream restriction in the past 90 days. YouTube’s current eligibility help page states that streamers must be at least 16 years old: YouTube live-streaming eligibility.
- An Ubuntu system with GStreamer tools and the plug-ins needed to read your media, encode video and audio, mux FLV, and send RTMP(S).
- A stable upload connection with enough capacity for your total stream bitrate plus headroom.
- The RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.
GStreamer identifies gstreamer1.0-tools as the tools package name for Debian/Ubuntu-style systems. Install the package using your usual Ubuntu package manager, then check that the command-line launcher is available with gst-launch-1.0 --version. Package versions differ between Ubuntu releases; for example, Ubuntu Noble’s manpage lists version 1.24.2-1ubuntu0.1, which should not be assumed for other releases. See Ubuntu Noble’s gst-launch-1.0 manpage and the GStreamer tools tutorial.
Set YouTube’s ingest settings first
YouTube currently lists RTMP and RTMPS as encoder protocols and recommends RTMPS. Its listed video codecs are H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; it supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and accepts AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it must not exceed four seconds. Check the current YouTube encoder settings before configuring an encoder, since service guidance can change.
Choose a bitrate that fits the connection
For H.264, YouTube lists these figures for two common formats. They are YouTube’s encoder-setting guidance, not independent test results.

| Format | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps, H.264 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
Use a format and bitrate your upstream connection can sustain. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the combined bitrate of primary, backup, and stream feeds. If your connection cannot provide that margin reliably, lower the output bitrate or resolution rather than risking interruptions. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Get the RTMPS URL and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and go to the stream’s settings.
- Reveal or copy the RTMPS URL and stream key. YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default, so confirm the protocol is
rtmps. - Enter the URL and key only in the encoder or application that needs them. Do not publish the key, commit it to source control, or include it in shared logs or screenshots.
- If you suspect the key has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. YouTube treats the stream key like a password. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
YouTube’s RTMPS setup guidance says to verify the URL and try port 443 for certain SSL errors. Follow that advice only where it applies to the error you see; do not silently substitute a different endpoint. Details: Set up your encoder for YouTube Live.

Understand the GStreamer pipeline—and the loop gap
A typical GStreamer publishing pipeline has to perform several jobs: read and decode the file, encode video and audio in a YouTube-supported format, mux the encoded streams into FLV, then send that container to the ingest endpoint. GStreamer’s rtmpsink documentation shows RTMP output after FLV muxing: rtmpsink documentation. The element is part of the Bad Plug-ins set; the documentation does not prove that a particular Ubuntu installation can connect to YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint. Verify the installed plug-ins and transport on the exact Ubuntu release and machine you plan to use.
The GStreamer tutorial demonstrates file decoding with uridecodebin and encoding with x264enc. It notes that tune=zerolatency may suit live-streaming scenarios, with a quality trade-off. That is not a complete YouTube-ready or loop-ready command. See GStreamer’s handy elements tutorial.

Most importantly, the documented rtmpsink example and the relevant source pages do not establish a built-in single-file repeat option. multifilesrc reads numbered file sequences, while splitmuxsrc reads parts produced by splitmuxsink; neither demonstrates endlessly repeating an ordinary MP4. See multifilesrc and splitmuxsrc.
For a reliable repeat, put loop control in an application
If the goal is a continuous single-file broadcast, build or use an application that explicitly owns the repeat behavior, then validate file-boundary behavior, audio/video synchronization, and network recovery. GStreamer describes gst-launch-1.0 primarily as a developer debugging tool and recommends using the GStreamer API for production applications rather than building an application on the command-line launcher. The sources cited here do not verify a current EOS/seek implementation, a seamless loop boundary, or automatic reconnection for a specific Ubuntu setup, so those details must be tested in the implementation you choose.

Test the stream before relying on it
- Use a short test stream from the intended Ubuntu machine, with representative motion and audio—not a silent or static file if the real content includes sound and movement.
- Start the encoder or application and check the Live Control Room preview before treating the stream as ready.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and status messages; check both audio and video during the test.
- Verify the actual output resolution, frame rate, audio, and keyframe cadence, along with whether your installed RTMPS path connects successfully.
- Confirm outbound bandwidth leaves the recommended 20% headroom over the combined stream bitrates.
- When the event or test ends, stop the encoder deliberately and confirm the live session has ended as intended.

gst-launch-1.0 is not found |
The GStreamer command-line tools are missing or unavailable on the shell path. | Install the Ubuntu package gstreamer1.0-tools for your release, then check the command and package version. |
| The pipeline cannot find an element | A required decoder, encoder, muxer, or sink plug-in may not be installed. | Identify the missing element and install/check the plug-in set appropriate to your Ubuntu build. Do not assume the documented rtmpsink is present or RTMPS-capable on every build. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream or reports an SSL error | Wrong endpoint, protocol mismatch, or transport/port issue. | Confirm you copied the RTMPS URL rather than the default RTMP URL; for applicable SSL errors, YouTube advises verifying the URL and trying port 443. |
| Stream starts but video or audio is wrong | Encoding choices, media decoding, or muxing may not match the intended output. | Check YouTube’s supported codec and bitrate guidance, inspect the preview, and test with representative media before the real broadcast. |
| The file plays once and then stops | The publishing pipeline has no verified loop control. | Use an application with explicit repeat logic or a separately verified loop-capable design; do not mistake numbered-file input for a single-file loop. |
| Video freezes or the stream drops | Insufficient upload capacity, unstable network, or a transport/recovery limitation. | Measure whether the connection sustains the total bitrate plus headroom and test what the chosen implementation does after network interruption. Do not assume automatic recovery unless that behavior is implemented and tested. |
| The stream key appears in logs or has been shared | The credential is exposed. | Reset the key in Live Control Room, then update the encoder securely. |
