To lower CPU usage while streaming a playlist in OBS, first check whether the load comes from x264 video encoding, the scene and its sources, or the way the playlist is played. If OBS is using x264 and your computer supports a compatible hardware encoder, test that encoder. Then simplify the scene and, for files stored on your computer, use OBS’s Media Source playlist features rather than playing them through a browser. These changes can reduce work, but the result depends on your hardware, settings and content; there is no reliable universal percentage reduction.
This guide assumes “playlist” means local audio or video files played by OBS. A YouTube page captured in a browser source is a different, browser-heavy setup, covered below. It does not provide a guide to rebroadcasting another YouTube stream.
Find out what is using the CPU
OBS does more than encode the outgoing video. It also renders and composites the scene. Changing the encoder can help with encoding load, but it will not necessarily fix a scene that is too demanding. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guidance, published June 12, 2021, recommends simplifying scenes and limiting expensive sources and filters.
- Check the selected encoder. In OBS, open Settings → Output and look at the encoder selected for streaming. If it is x264, OBS is using software encoding on the CPU.
- Note when usage rises. Compare CPU load when OBS is idle, when the playlist is playing, and when the stream is active. This helps distinguish source or scene load from encoding load.
- Change one thing at a time. Keep other settings steady when testing an encoder or source change so you can tell whether it helped.
Switch from x264 to a supported hardware encoder
If OBS is using x264 and your computer offers a suitable hardware encoder, select it in Settings → Output and test the stream. Hardware encoders use a specialized component to handle video encoding, which can move that work off the CPU. OBS describes this as a performance option, not a guarantee that total CPU use will become negligible.

Check the result at your intended resolution and bitrate. OBS also cautions that older generations of hardware encoders may provide lower image quality than software encoding at comparable bitrates. The right choice depends on your hardware and quality needs; do not assume every GPU or encoder will perform identically. See OBS’s Hardware Encoding guidance, published January 11, 2022.
Simplify the scene and its sources
Review the scene used for the playlist and remove anything that is not needed for the broadcast. OBS identifies complex scenes, expensive sources and filters as potential performance burdens.

- Remove unused sources and reduce filters or effects that do not materially improve the stream.
- Keep scene collections focused rather than maintaining large collections of complex scenes and sources.
- Limit browser sources, especially those with animations or scripts. Where practical, use smaller source dimensions.
- Use an image source for a static image. For local audio or video, use Media Source or VLC Source instead of loading the file in a browser source.
Test resource-heavy sources individually if you still cannot identify the bottleneck. OBS’s recommendations are practical troubleshooting guidance, not a promise of a particular CPU reduction. See OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.
Set up a local playlist with Media Source
For files on your computer, OBS Media Source supports audio and video formats and includes playlist controls. Its documented options also include looping, hardware decoding when supported, and a setting to close the file when the source is inactive. OBS documents these controls but does not claim that hardware decoding always lowers CPU use on every system. See OBS Media Sources, published January 11, 2022.

- Add or select the source: in the relevant scene, add a Media Source or open the properties of the existing one.
- Enable playlist playback: use the Media Source playlist controls to add the local files you want to play.
- Choose whether to loop: enable looping if the playlist should start again after it reaches the end.
- Consider inactive-source behavior: enable Close file when inactive if the source will be hidden or on another scene and you want it to release the file while inactive. If the source needs to continue playing while hidden, do not close it when inactive.
- Test hardware decoding only if supported: try the option when your GPU supports decoding the file’s format, then compare behavior on your own setup.
If the playlist is playing in a browser source
A browser source adds browser overhead that a local media source does not. The OBS forum thread started April 26, 2020, and an OBS administrator and developer, R1CH, noted that browser video formats may also not be hardware-decoded by the browser. That is an explanation of a possible cause, not a benchmark or a rule for every configuration.
If you control the files and the stream is meant to play that local playlist, try Media Source or VLC Source and compare CPU load. If the browser source is necessary, simplify its page and animations, and test it without other expensive sources or filters. Do not infer that switching sources will fix every case: the result depends on the source and system.

Common problems and what to try
- CPU stays high after changing encoders: encoding may not be the main bottleneck. Remove unnecessary sources and filters, simplify the scene, and test demanding sources separately.
- Hardware encoder is not available: your current system or OBS configuration may not offer a compatible encoder. Keep the existing encoder and focus first on scene and source simplification.
- Hardware encoding lowers CPU but stream quality looks worse: encoder generations can differ in quality at comparable bitrates. Compare the result at the settings you actually plan to use; return to the prior encoder if the quality trade-off is unacceptable.
- CPU rises when a browser playlist starts: the browser source may add overhead. If you are playing local files, test them in Media Source or VLC Source instead.
- Closing an inactive media source stops playback: that setting releases the file when the source is inactive. Disable it if you need the source to keep playing while hidden or off-scene.
- Hardware decoding does not help: support depends on the GPU and file format, and OBS does not promise a CPU reduction on every setup. Compare with the option off and keep the setting that works reliably.
When another computer or cloud service is worth considering
Try the no-cost OBS changes first. Consider different hardware only if your current computer lacks a suitable hardware encoder or still cannot handle the workload after you have simplified the scene. Compatibility, encoding quality and your existing equipment matter; the available guidance does not establish a best GPU model or current hardware price.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is simply to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is an alternative to running OBS on your own computer. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the files as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
