You can’t change OBS’s Video-tab resolution while its output is active. OBS requires you to turn off outputs before changing Video settings, so lowering resolution this way interrupts the stream. For a 24/7 channel, schedule a maintenance transition: test the new settings first, stop the output, change the setting, then restart and check YouTube’s stream health.
Which OBS resolution setting should you change?
For the usual goal—sending a lower-resolution feed to YouTube without rearranging your scene—change Output (Scaled) Resolution under Settings > Video. It controls the resolution OBS sends to the stream or recording after scaling. OBS gives streaming at 720p from 1080p sources as an example. OBS Overview Guide
Base (Canvas) Resolution is the workspace where OBS lays out sources. Changing it can require resizing or repositioning sources. Keep it at the resolution that suits your scene unless you have a separate reason to change the composition canvas. OBS cautions against lowering canvas resolution except when GPU resources are severely constrained. OBS Overview Guide OBS Performance Guide
Why changing it interrupts the stream
When an output is active, OBS’s Video settings display this warning: “Video output is currently active. Please turn off any outputs to change video settings.” OBS Studio interface text In the documented workflow, there is no supported way to change Output (Scaled) Resolution while the output remains active. You must stop the output, make the change, and start it again.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube’s automatic transcoding does not remove that interruption. YouTube creates viewer playback formats from the incoming stream, but that does not keep OBS connected while you stop and restart its output. The official guidance reviewed here does not guarantee that a restart preserves the same live event or viewer session. YouTube live encoder settings OBS streaming guide
Plan a lower-resolution change for a 24/7 stream
- Choose a maintenance window. Tell viewers about the expected interruption or schedule the transition for a quieter period. Do not assume a reconnect will be seamless or preserve the same YouTube event.
- Test the intended setup beforehand. In OBS, prepare the lower Output (Scaled) Resolution and check your scenes and representative video, motion, and audio in a test stream. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. YouTube live encoder settings
- Stop OBS outputs. The Video settings warning requires outputs to be off before you can change Video settings.
- Set the output resolution. Open Settings > Video, change Output (Scaled) Resolution to the target, and leave Base (Canvas) Resolution unchanged unless you also intend to alter the scene workspace.
- Restart and verify. Start the stream with the intended configuration, then check YouTube’s stream-health messages. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, for the encoder connection. YouTube live encoder settings
Save an alternate OBS configuration
If you expect to switch between configurations, create an OBS Profile in advance. Profiles can save Stream, Video, and Output settings, but they do not save Scenes. Switching profiles does not bypass the active-output restriction: stop outputs before changing Video settings. OBS Profiles

Resolution or frame rate: which is more useful for performance?
Reducing output resolution can reduce encoder load. Reducing frame rate can also lower rendering and encoding work; OBS gives moving from 60 fps to 30 fps as an example when 60 fps is not working. The trade-off is less visual detail with lower resolution, or less-smooth motion with lower frame rate. The actual performance and quality impact depends on your system and content, so test before applying a production change. OBS Performance Guide
OBS also notes that 60 fps can be substantially more demanding than 30 fps. Lowering Base (Canvas) Resolution is a different, more disruptive adjustment because it can require source layout work; OBS recommends it only when GPU resources are severely constrained. Common problems and fixes
- Output (Scaled) Resolution is unavailable: An OBS output is active. Stop outputs, then return to Settings > Video.
- Sources look misplaced after changing resolution: Check whether you changed Base (Canvas) Resolution as well. Restore the intended canvas size or realign and resize sources for the new workspace.
- The stream still struggles after lowering resolution: Test a lower frame rate, such as 30 fps instead of 60 fps, and check YouTube stream health after restarting. Resolution is not the only setting that affects rendering and encoding load.
- YouTube playback quality choices do not change as expected: YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into multiple formats for viewers, but those viewer-side options are separate from the resolution OBS sends and do not avoid an OBS restart. YouTube live encoder settings OBS streaming guide
