Azure Monitor cannot see a YouTube stream on its own. To alert when an always-on stream stops, run a monitor that polls YouTube’s Live Streaming API, sends timestamped observations to Azure Monitor, and evaluates them with an alert rule. Track three different failures separately: YouTube stopped receiving stream data, the stream has a health or configuration problem, or the monitoring pipeline stopped reporting.
Decide what “stops” means for your channel
An encoder-input outage, a YouTube broadcast lifecycle change, and a broken monitoring process are different events. Choose which one should notify an operator before building the alert.
- Incoming stream data: YouTube’s
liveStream.status.streamStatusdescribes the input stream. YouTube documentsactive,created,error,inactive, andready;activemeans YouTube is receiving data, whileinactivemeans it is not. See YouTube’s LiveStreams resource documentation. - Stream health:
liveStream.status.healthStatusis a separate diagnostic signal, not another name for active/inactive. It can reportgood,ok,bad, ornoData, with an update time and configuration issues. Issue severity can beinfo,warning, orerror; YouTube documentserrorseverity as meaning the video cannot be broadcast to viewers. See the LiveStreams resource. - Broadcast event lifecycle:
liveBroadcast.status.lifeCycleStatusdescribes the broadcast’s scheduled/live/ended lifecycle. It does not tell you by itself whether encoder data is arriving. Check which resource represents your actual always-on setup. See YouTube’s LiveBroadcasts resource documentation. - Monitor freshness: If the poller, its credentials, network connection, or ingestion path fails, Azure may stop receiving observations without ever receiving an explicit YouTube error. Alert on stale or missing telemetry too.
These signals answer different questions. An input-status alert is appropriate for loss of incoming data; health alerts can provide early warning about configuration; lifecycle alerts are useful when the broadcast event ending matters. None alone proves what every viewer can see.
Architecture: poll YouTube, ingest observations, alert
The following is a reference architecture assembled from documented YouTube API fields and Azure Monitor capabilities. Microsoft and Google’s reviewed documentation does not describe a ready-made YouTube-to-Azure connector. The polling code, API credentials, schema, thresholds, and operational ownership are responsibilities of the channel operator.

- Poll the relevant YouTube resource. Use the YouTube Live Streaming API to read the relevant
liveStreamresource’sstatus.streamStatusandstatus.healthStatus. Include the broadcast lifecycle only if it is relevant to your alert policy. Confirm that the stream and broadcast IDs correspond to the always-on channel setup. - Build a timestamped observation. Include an observation timestamp, stream ID, channel or broadcast ID as appropriate, stream status, health status, health update time, and a monitor heartbeat. These are useful query fields, not a schema mandated by YouTube or Azure.
- Send JSON to a custom Log Analytics table. Create a custom table and a data collection rule (DCR), then send records through the Azure Monitor Logs Ingestion API. The application can call the REST API or use a client library; the JSON must match the DCR’s expected input structure. The DCR routes the records to the table and can transform them. The application needs an app registration with access to the DCR.
- Create a scheduled-query log alert. Use KQL to inspect recent records and identify explicit unhealthy states, stale observations, and—if desired—health or configuration warnings. Azure Monitor’s alert-type guidance describes log and metric alert behavior.
- Attach an action group. Choose email or an automated response such as an Azure Function, Logic App, or webhook. Configure the receiver to handle the selected payload schema and authentication method; test both alert and recovery paths.
Design alert conditions that catch the right failure
Explicit input failure
For an outage notification, query for the stream’s latest observation and alert when the input state is inactive or error. Do not treat every non-active value as an outage without considering setup and lifecycle: states such as created or ready may occur before the input is active. Define the expected states for your channel and the point at which an operator should be paged.
Stale or missing observations
Set a freshness condition that fires when no sufficiently recent heartbeat or observation arrives. This covers a stopped poller or failed ingestion as well as a loss of stream status telemetry. Choose the timeout based on your operating tolerance, poll interval, ingestion delay, and alert evaluation frequency; a single old record is not enough to establish an outage if normal pipeline delays could explain it.

Health and lifecycle warnings
If you want warnings before an input outage, evaluate health status and configuration issue severity separately from the input-state rule. If an ended or otherwise changed broadcast event matters, monitor lifeCycleStatus as its own condition. Keeping these rules distinct makes the resulting notification more actionable.
Log alerts or a metric heartbeat?
Log search alerts let you apply KQL to the observations you ingest. If missing data is the main concern, a custom metric heartbeat with a metric alert may be a better fit: Microsoft cautions that log alerts can be more latent for absence detection. Metric alert costs are based on time series; log alert costs depend on query evaluation interval, and more frequent evaluations cost more. Check current Azure pricing for your deployment region and expected volume; no universal interval or end-to-end detection time is established for this architecture.

Configure notification delivery and secure integrations
Azure Monitor action groups can send notifications or invoke automation, including Azure Functions, Logic Apps, and webhooks. For webhook integrations, make the receiver resilient and ensure it understands the payload. Azure’s common alert schema standardizes essential information, context, and custom properties across supported alert types. Microsoft recommends Logic Apps when a target needs a different schema.
Secure webhooks use Microsoft Entra ID and do not support basic authentication. Microsoft documents retries after failed webhook calls, with retry intervals of 5, 20, 5, 40, and 5 seconds, followed by a 15-minute period during which the action group does not call the endpoint if retries fail. Treat delivery as another system to monitor rather than an infallible path. See Microsoft’s action group documentation.

Validate the complete monitoring path
Before relying on alerts, test the YouTube poll, record ingestion, query result, rule evaluation, action group, and receiver together. Use controlled failure and recovery cases that match your channel’s operating setup. Verify that an explicit inactive/error state produces the intended notification, that a stopped poller is caught by freshness logic, and that recovery clears or resolves the alert as expected. The official component documentation does not establish a universally safe API polling cadence, quota for a particular channel, or end-to-end stop-detection guarantee.
