Start with a wired Ethernet test, pause every download and stream, power-cycle the modem and router, then compare the same game server again. If ping is normal while the connection is idle but jumps when somebody uploads, downloads or streams, configure QoS or smart queue management (SQM) to control bufferbloat. If a wired, quiet connection still has high latency or packet loss, the limiting factor is usually server distance, ISP routing or congestion outside your home—not a setting that can be fixed on the gaming device.

This guide shows how to measure ping, separate latency from packet loss and jitter, test each likely bottleneck, and decide whether a cable, router feature, DNS change or ISP conversation is justified.

What ping, latency, packet loss and jitter actually mean

Ping is the round-trip time for data to travel from your device to the game server and back, normally shown in milliseconds (ms). Lower ping generally means your inputs reach the server sooner, but there is no single “good ping” number that applies to every game, region or network path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Latency: the travel time of a packet and its return. In-game ping is one measurement of this round trip.
  • Packet loss: packets that never arrive or never receive a response. Loss causes missing updates, rubber-banding, voice-chat dropouts and disconnects, even when the displayed ping looks low.
  • Jitter: variation between successive latency measurements. A stable 50 ms is usually more playable than a connection that alternates between 20 ms and 200 ms.

Distance imposes a floor on latency. Riot Games Support explains that, when an internet connection is otherwise working normally, physical distance from its servers is the largest contributing factor. A local tweak cannot remove the propagation time to a distant region, and a faster download plan does not automatically shorten that route.

Measure a baseline before changing anything

Write down the game, selected server or region, in-game ping, packet-loss indicator and whether the problem is constant or appears only during busy periods. Repeat tests on the same server whenever the game allows it; comparing different regions can create a false “improvement.” Capture one sample with the household idle and another while the usual download, stream or upload is running.

Use the game’s own network graph

Enable the game’s performance or network statistics overlay if available. Record the minimum, typical and peak latency, not just a single reading. Note freezes, prediction errors, rubber-banding and disconnects separately from the number: those symptoms often point to loss or jitter rather than a high but steady round trip.

Check the local link from Windows

  1. Open Command Prompt. Run ipconfig and identify the Default Gateway address (often a private address such as 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x).
  2. Run ping -n 50 <your-default-gateway>. This tests the device-to-router path. Spikes or loss here indicate Wi-Fi, cable, adapter or local-router trouble before traffic reaches your ISP.
  3. Run ping -n 50 1.1.1.1 while no heavy traffic is running, then repeat during a download or upload. A large increase under load is a classic congestion or bufferbloat pattern.
  4. Run tracert <game-server-hostname> only when you have a hostname supplied by the game or its support team. A route can change by time of day, and an intermediate hop that does not answer traceroute is not, by itself, proof of a fault.

Keep the output and timestamps for your ISP or the game publisher. These tests do not reproduce the exact game protocol, but they reveal whether the delay begins inside your home, at the access link or farther along the route.

Fixes in the order most likely to help

1. Test with Ethernet first

Connect the computer directly to the router or modem with an Ethernet cable, as Riot Support recommends: “If possible, connect your computer directly to your router or modem with an Ethernet cable and test again.” Use a sound Cat6 cable or a compatible USB-to-Ethernet adapter for a device without a suitable port. Consoles can use their built-in LAN port or an approved adapter.

Run the same in-game test after switching. Ethernet removes radio interference, weak-signal retransmissions and much of the contention that occurs when several devices share a wireless channel. It does not make a distant server closer; it tells you whether Wi-Fi is the local cause. Try a second cable or router port if the wired link repeatedly disconnects or negotiates at an unexpectedly low rate.

2. Power-cycle the modem and router

  1. Turn off the modem and router (or the single gateway supplied by your ISP).
  2. Wait at least 30 seconds with both devices powered down.
  3. Turn on the modem or gateway and wait until its connection indicators settle.
  4. Turn on the router if it is a separate device, reconnect the gaming device and repeat the baseline test.

This clears transient state and renews the access connection. It will not change a permanently long route or an overloaded neighborhood network, so treat the result as a diagnostic rather than a permanent latency cure.

3. Stop competing traffic

Pause game and operating-system updates, cloud backups, photo synchronization, torrents, video streams and large file transfers. Check every device on the network, including televisions, phones and security cameras. Temporarily disconnect a device that is saturating the link, then test the game again.

Pay special attention to uploads. A full upstream queue can delay small game packets even when download capacity appears plentiful. If ping returns to normal as soon as the heavy transfer stops, congestion control—not the game computer’s processing speed—is the priority.

4. Improve Wi-Fi when a cable is impractical

  • Place the access point in an open, central location rather than inside a cabinet or behind large appliances.
  • Reduce distance and walls between the access point and the gaming device; test the same room before changing advanced settings.
  • Choose the band that gives the device a stable signal in that location. A shorter-range band can be faster nearby, while a longer-range band may remain steadier through walls.
  • Look for neighboring-network interference and crowded channels in the router’s wireless settings. Let automatic channel selection settle, then retest at the time you normally play.
  • Keep the access point’s firmware and the device’s wireless driver current, and retest after each change rather than changing several variables at once.

Wi-Fi can be perfectly playable, but Ethernet is the control test. If both paths show the same high latency to the same server while the household is idle, replacing wireless hardware is unlikely to solve a distance or ISP-routing problem.

5. Control congestion with QoS or SQM

If idle ping is acceptable but rises sharply during downloads or uploads, open the router’s administration interface and look for Quality of Service (QoS), Smart Queue Management (SQM) or a similarly named traffic-shaping feature. The goal is to keep queues short, not to give one game unlimited bandwidth.

  1. Measure your real downstream and upstream capacity at a quiet time. Use sustained measurements rather than the headline rate on the plan.
  2. Enter conservative shaping rates below the measured capacity, especially for the upload direction. Exact values depend on the router, access technology and line conditions.
  3. Apply the profile, then repeat a latency-under-load test while a download and upload run. Confirm that peak latency and packet loss improve without making the connection unusably slow.
  4. If the router offers per-device or per-application priority, use it sparingly. A priority rule cannot repair a bad ISP route or a server that is far away.

QoS/SQM quality varies by firmware and hardware. A newer router is useful only when it can shape your measured bottleneck reliably; buying a “gaming” label alone does not overcome server distance, access-network congestion or an ISP bottleneck.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Rule out software and driver causes

These checks are worthwhile when the gateway ping is unstable, the network adapter repeatedly disconnects or only one computer has the problem. They are not universal cures for a high round trip to a distant server.

  1. Install current operating-system updates and the network adapter driver from the computer or adapter manufacturer. Reboot after installation.
  2. Temporarily disable a VPN or proxy and test again. A tunnel can add an extra route or overloaded relay; keep it disabled while isolating the ordinary connection.
  3. Review firewall rules for the game and its launcher. Do not turn off protection permanently; add a legitimate application rule only when the game’s support instructions require it.
  4. On Windows, open an elevated Command Prompt and run ipconfig /flushdns, netsh winsock reset and netsh int ip reset. Restart Windows, reconnect and retest. Record custom network settings first because a reset can remove them.

If every device on the network shows the same behavior, focus on the router, access link or ISP rather than repeatedly reinstalling the game.

7. Try a different DNS resolver as an isolation test

DNS translates a service name into an IP address. A slow or unreachable resolver can delay sign-in, matchmaking or the initial connection, but DNS normally does not determine the round-trip path after the game session is established. Changing DNS therefore is not a guaranteed way to lower in-match ping.

Cloudflare documents setup of its 1.1.1.1 resolver for PlayStation and Xbox. If you test it, change the DNS setting on the console or router, reconnect, and compare both session-start time and the actual in-game latency on the same server. Restore the previous setting if reliability worsens. Do not treat a quicker lookup as proof that the game packets now travel a shorter route.

8. Select the nearest appropriate game region

Use the game’s automatic or manual region selector to choose a nearby server with a healthy population. A “nearby” country can still be reached through a poor route, so compare the measured result rather than geography alone. If the game offers server-specific ping values, avoid a region that is consistently much higher or shows loss.

9. Escalate with evidence

Contact the game’s support team when only that title or region is affected, and contact your ISP when multiple services show the same wired, idle-time problem. Provide:

  • Dates and local times, including whether the issue is worse in the evening.
  • The selected game server or region and in-game ping, jitter or loss indicators.
  • Gateway and external ping results from both idle and loaded tests.
  • Traceroute output, if the game or ISP requests it.
  • Your connection type, router model, whether Ethernet reproduced the issue, and any recent changes.

Ask the ISP about routing to the relevant game region, access-network congestion, upload capacity and recurring packet loss. Headline download speed alone is not a gaming-latency metric.

Diagnose the pattern instead of guessing

What you observe Most likely area to investigate Next useful test
High ping and loss to the router over Wi-Fi, but a clean wired test Wireless interference, signal quality or the access point Reposition the access point, change band or channel, and retest
Normal idle ping; large spikes during downloads or uploads Home-link congestion and bufferbloat Pause traffic, then configure and verify QoS/SQM
High ping on Ethernet with every household device idle Server distance, ISP route or access-network congestion Compare regions and collect ping/traceroute evidence for support
Only one computer disconnects or shows loss Adapter, cable, driver, firewall or local software Try another cable/port, update the driver and review rules
Login or matchmaking is slow, but in-game ping is unchanged DNS resolution or service-side setup Compare a documented public DNS resolver, then measure the game session itself

What to buy—and what not to expect

Ethernet cable or USB adapter

A Cat6 cable is the clearest physical purchase when Wi-Fi is the variable. Choose a length that avoids sharp bends and a connector compatible with the router and device. A USB-to-Ethernet adapter is an interface for hardware without a suitable port; it does not lower the server’s intrinsic latency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wi-Fi access point or mesh system

Additional wireless hardware can improve coverage and stability where the current signal is weak. It is relevant only if the wired-versus-wireless test identifies the radio link as the problem. Placement, interference and backhaul quality matter more than a “gaming” badge.

QoS/SQM-capable router

Consider one when measured latency-under-load shows bufferbloat and the current router cannot shape traffic. Compare the router’s supported SQM method, throughput after shaping, firmware quality, device support and configuration controls. Do not buy it expecting a lower baseline ping to a distant server.

ISP plan or access technology

For persistent wired latency or loss, compare providers by route to the game region, busy-time latency, upload capacity, reliability, access technology and total contract cost. A plan with a faster advertised download rate can still have a longer or more congested route than a slower plan.

DNS services and VPNs

DNS services are useful for testing name-resolution reliability. A VPN may occasionally provide a better route, but it can also add distance, encryption overhead or an overloaded relay. Neither is a dependable general-purpose in-game ping reducer, and neither removes the physical distance to the server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much improvement is realistic?

Ethernet can remove wireless-related spikes; stopping a saturated transfer can restore the idle result; and SQM can keep queues controlled under load. None of those changes guarantees a particular number of milliseconds. Riot Games reported in 2020 that 70% of VALORANT players had 35 ms ping as part of a server-placement target. That figure describes Riot’s deployment goal for that game and period, not a universal promise for every player, game or region.

When a clean wired test remains high, the honest goal is stability and the best available route, not an arbitrary threshold. Measure the same server before and after each change, and keep the configuration that reduces spikes or loss without creating new disconnects.

Quick pre-match checklist

  • Confirm the game is using the intended server region.
  • Check the in-game ping and loss indicator before joining a competitive match.
  • Prefer Ethernet for the test; if using Wi-Fi, verify signal and interference conditions.
  • Pause updates, cloud sync, streams and large uploads on every household device.
  • If latency rises under load, enable and verify QoS/SQM rather than simply buying a faster plan.
  • Leave VPNs and proxies off while diagnosing the ordinary route.
  • Change DNS only to test resolution or connection setup, then judge the actual game session.
  • Save timestamps and test results before contacting game or ISP support.

As an optional Windows maintenance shortcut after the network checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues, reduce some CPU, RAM and disk load through settings tweaks, clear temporary and cache files, check Windows settings and missing updates, and provide tools such as real-time boost, file shredder and crash logging. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and offers a free trial by category (at least two days) before a paid subscription; it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.

The practical verdict

Use Ethernet and a quiet network to establish the truth first. If load causes the spike, control queues with QoS/SQM; if only setup is slow, DNS is worth testing; if a clean wired path is still slow, investigate server region and ISP routing. That sequence prevents expensive hardware or software changes from masking a limitation that exists outside your home.
