Yes—a Raspberry Pi can encode and send a church video feed to YouTube Live, but it is only one part of the setup. You need a video source, a clean audio feed, a compatible encoding pipeline, reliable upload bandwidth, and a plan for outages. Most importantly, a continuous live broadcast and a dependable recording of every sermon are separate goals.
What you need for a 24/7 sermon stream
Plan the complete signal chain before buying or configuring anything:
- Video: a camera connected to the Pi, or an existing church camera routed through compatible capture hardware.
- Audio: preferably a clean feed from the church sound system, rather than a distant camera microphone. The exact mixer output and input interface depend on your equipment.
- Encoder/controller: the Raspberry Pi and a software pipeline that combines the intended video and audio and sends a YouTube-compatible stream.
- Network and power: a stable upload connection and power sized for the board and attached equipment.
- Operations: a person or process responsible for monitoring, recovery, and a separate sermon archive.
Raspberry Pi documentation covers camera/video streaming tools and audio-capable multimedia workflows, but does not establish a tested, ready-made church build using a specific board, capture card, audio interface, or command. Verify the complete setup with your exact hardware before relying on it for a service. Raspberry Pi camera software documentation
Choose and prepare the Pi setup
Choose how video and audio enter the Pi
A Pi-connected camera is one possible route. Raspberry Pi 5 has two MIPI camera connectors; check the current camera documentation for compatibility with your camera module and software. If you intend to use an existing camera, first identify its actual output connector and determine what capture hardware can accept it. The available documentation does not verify a particular capture card or audio interface.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For spoken sermons, prioritize intelligible sound. Identify an appropriate mixer output, then choose an interface that can accept it and connect to the Pi. Check levels, channel selection, and audio/video synchronization. Raspberry Pi documents audio support in its libav streaming examples, but that alone does not confirm compatibility with any particular interface.
Install the operating system and plan power
- Install Raspberry Pi OS on suitable boot media using Raspberry Pi’s current getting-started instructions.
- Configure network access. For an unattended installation, secure remote administration and document who can access the device.
- Connect the camera and audio hardware you have selected, then confirm that the Pi can see and use each device.
- Size the power supply for the board and peripherals. Raspberry Pi recommends 5 V at 5 A for Pi 5; check the requirements of your actual board and connected equipment.
Pi 4 and later include Gigabit Ethernet, which may be useful where wired networking is practical. The board, peripherals, and network equipment all need power for the system to keep running. Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation
Build an encoder pipeline that YouTube can ingest
Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation includes rpicam-vid examples, network-streaming workflows, and an audio-capable libav path using MPEG-TS. These are building blocks, not a turnkey YouTube RTMPS command. Your pipeline must capture the intended sources, combine audio and video, encode compatible output, and send it to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. Test the entire chain—including sync and sustained operation—on the exact Pi, operating system, camera, and audio hardware you will use. Raspberry Pi camera software documentation

For YouTube’s documented RTMP/RTMPS encoder path, use H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transmission. Apply these requirements in the encoder you choose; the specific controls and syntax vary by software. - In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream using the encoder workflow in Live Control Room.
- Choose the stream’s visibility—public, private, or unlisted—and schedule it if appropriate.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into your encoder’s destination settings. Treat the key as a credential: YouTube describes stream keys as the stream’s “password and address.” Do not publish it or include it in screenshots or logs that others can access.
- Start the encoder and check the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Confirm the camera framing, intelligible audio, levels, and synchronization before making an event public.
- Use the watch page to verify the viewer experience on desktop and mobile, then check YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
Use YouTube’s current instructions for creating an encoder stream and managing its settings, since the Studio interface and available options can change. A visibility setting controls who can view a stream; it does not establish permission to broadcast or record everything in it. Choose quality around measured upload capacity
Measure upload performance at the church during the times and network conditions in which you expect to stream. Do not assume the advertised connection speed is fully available to the encoder. YouTube says total outbound bitrate must fit available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% spare capacity; other people and devices sharing the connection can reduce what is available. Include any parallel backup stream when calculating the total. YouTube streaming tips

YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations give these bitrate ranges. They are operating recommendations, not independent performance tests:
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 or 60 fps | 3–8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5–14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6–17 Mbps |
These ranges are from YouTube’s encoder settings guidance, whose page does not display a publication year. Choose a bitrate the church connection can sustain with the recommended headroom, then verify stream health under representative network use. Starting with a sustainable resolution is safer than selecting the highest available setting without testing. YouTube encoder settings

Commission the setup and plan for failures
- Test with representative movement and sound: a speaker moving at the pulpit, the usual lighting, and the actual sound-system feed.
- Check the Live Control Room preview, stream-health messages, and the watch page on desktop and mobile.
- Run a sustained test long enough to expose overheating, storage, network, or synchronization issues that a brief preview may not reveal.
- For a scheduled event, YouTube recommends setting up the encoder two hours ahead and starting it 15 minutes before the event. Treat these as event-preparation recommendations, not as a guarantee of unattended 24/7 reliability.
- Write down who receives alerts, how the encoder will be restarted after a Pi or network failure, and how the stream key will be protected or rotated if exposed.
- Consider backup power only after calculating the required runtime for the Pi, camera, and network equipment together. No specific UPS model or runtime is established here.

Keep sermon replays separate from the live broadcast
A channel that stays live around the clock does not necessarily produce one complete, usable recording. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; they do not establish that one stream lasting 24 hours or indefinitely will produce a single complete archive. Recheck YouTube’s current rules before depending on automatic archiving, because platform behavior can change. YouTube’s encoder instructions
If every service needs a dependable replay, create an independent recording and archive workflow. Decide where each service recording is saved, who checks that it completed, how it is backed up, and how it will be made available. YouTube also advises checking local archive files where local recording is enabled. A live stream’s public, private, or unlisted setting is a visibility choice, not a substitute for a separate archive plan.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check permissions and privacy before going live
Before broadcasting or storing a service, confirm the permissions and applicable YouTube requirements for your church, location, and content. Consider music, readings, performers, congregation members, and anyone else identifiable in the video or audio. The technical guidance here does not resolve rights clearance or local privacy rules. Choose stream visibility deliberately, and do not treat an unlisted or private stream as proof that you have permission to use the content.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Check that the encoder is running, the stream URL and key are copied correctly, and the selected YouTube stream is the one configured in the encoder. Keep the key private; replace it if it has been exposed. |
| Stream health reports instability or viewers see buffering | Measure available upload capacity during actual church network use, account for other users and any backup stream, and lower the encoder bitrate or output quality until it can be sustained with headroom. |
| Video appears but sermon audio is missing or unclear | Confirm the correct mixer output and input device, check channel selection and levels, and make sure the encoder includes the intended audio source. Test with the sound system used for the service. |
| Audio and video are out of sync | Check the capture and encoding pipeline and test the connected hardware together. Adjust synchronization in the encoder if it supports it; verify with a representative test before the next service. |
| The image is absent or the camera is not detected | Check camera and board compatibility against Raspberry Pi’s current camera documentation, confirm the connection, and verify capture locally before troubleshooting the YouTube destination. |
| The stream stops after a power or network interruption | Restore power or connectivity, check whether the encoder has resumed sending, and verify the feed in Live Control Room. Document who is responsible for restarting it; do not assume the Pi or YouTube will recover without monitoring. |
| A complete replay is missing | Check the stream’s duration and YouTube’s current archive behavior. Use the independent service-recording workflow for sermons that must be preserved. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded sermon videos, rather than broadcasting a live camera feed from the church, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and offers the first day free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera feed. See StreamNeo or its plans. To try it, start your free day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Raspberry Pi stream a live camera feed to YouTube?
Yes, if its video and audio inputs and encoding pipeline produce a feed YouTube can ingest. Test the complete setup with the actual church equipment before relying on it.
Does the Raspberry Pi have to stay on during a DIY stream?
Yes. In a Pi-based encoder setup, the Pi and the equipment it depends on must remain powered and connected while it sends the feed.
Will one 24/7 YouTube stream automatically become a complete sermon archive?
That is not established by YouTube’s documented automatic-archiving guidance for streams under 12 hours. Keep a separate recording workflow for sermons that must be preserved.
