To loop prerecorded video on YouTube Live from Linux, create a live event in YouTube Studio, give FFmpeg the event’s ingest URL and stream key, and run FFmpeg as a foreground process managed by systemd. FFmpeg handles the media; systemd can restart the process if it exits. Neither guarantees that YouTube is receiving healthy audio and video, so preview and monitor the stream.

How the YouTube Live loop works

The setup has three parts:

  • YouTube Live Control Room provides the ingest URL and stream key for the event.
  • FFmpeg reads a video or playlist, repeats it, and sends a compatible stream to YouTube. Depending on the source and chosen output, FFmpeg can encode the media or pass through compatible streams.
  • systemd runs FFmpeg as a managed foreground process and can start it at boot or restart it after certain failures.

You need a Linux host that can remain available while the broadcast runs, FFmpeg built with the protocols and codecs your workflow needs, media files readable by the service account, and enough reliable upstream bandwidth for the output bitrate. A machine at home can work if it stays powered and connected; a VPS or dedicated host is an optional deployment choice, not a technical requirement.

Create the YouTube event and protect its stream key

  1. Enable live streaming on the YouTube account and create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup instructions; check the current page for the applicable account workflow.
  2. Copy the event’s current stream URL and stream key from the encoder settings. Use the values for the event you intend to broadcast, and follow the Live Control Room workflow for starting the event.
  3. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a repository, put it in a world-readable service file, or leave it in a public command transcript. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the service.
  4. Run the service under a dedicated, low-privilege Linux account where practical. Use absolute paths for media and configuration so the service does not depend on an interactive shell’s working directory.

How you pass the secret to FFmpeg depends on your installed systemd and FFmpeg versions. Check the manuals for that host before choosing a credential or environment-file mechanism and verify its permissions. Do not copy a key into a unit file as a shortcut.

Choose a one-file loop or a playlist

Repeating one file

A single-file loop is the simpler case. FFmpeg has input-level looping options, but their behavior depends on the input demuxer and the installed build. Check the FFmpeg documentation matching your version and test the actual file rather than assuming that an option suitable for one format applies to every input.

Repeating a playlist

For a defined sequence, FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can read a list of files and repeat the playlist with its own loop directive. This is distinct from FFmpeg’s input-level -stream_loop option; they are not interchangeable playlist instructions. Consult the FFmpeg Formats Documentation for the syntax supported by your installed release.

Concat works best when the listed files have compatible stream layouts and properties. Different codecs, stream counts, or troublesome timestamps can make transitions fail or behave unexpectedly. Inspect the actual files, test the full sequence—including the transition from the last item back to the first—and, if necessary, prepare consistent media or use a different input workflow. Do not assume a playlist that opens successfully will loop cleanly on air.

Set output YouTube can ingest

YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval with a four-second maximum. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Confirm the protocol and codec support in your FFmpeg build and event configuration before choosing them. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Choose bitrate for the output resolution, frame rate, codec, and the host’s stable upload capacity—not just its advertised connection speed. The following are recommendations on YouTube Help, checked in 2026, rather than guarantees of quality or uninterrupted delivery:

Output Codec YouTube recommended video bitrate
1080p at 30 fps H.264 14 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps H.265 or AV1 10 Mbps
720p at 30 fps H.264 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps H.265 or AV1 6 Mbps

These figures are for video; account for audio and transport overhead as well. Prefer a setting the connection can sustain reliably. Test representative motion and audio, then inspect YouTube’s stream-health indicators and warnings instead of treating a bitrate target as proof of a healthy broadcast.

Re-encode or pass through?

Re-encoding gives control over the outgoing codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval, but uses CPU resources and can alter the source. Passing through compatible streams (often called stream copy or remuxing, depending on the output) avoids video re-encoding, but only works when the source streams and timestamps suit the YouTube ingest settings. These are engineering tradeoffs, not a performance guarantee: verify the resulting output and preview it in Live Control Room.

Run FFmpeg under systemd

Use a long-running foreground FFmpeg process so systemd can supervise the process directly. A Type=simple-style service is appropriate for this pattern when supported by the host’s systemd version. Keep the media paths absolute, provide a stable working directory if needed, and allow standard output and error to reach the system journal so you can inspect FFmpeg’s messages.

For many long-running services, a restart-on-failure policy with a delay is a sensible starting point. The systemd project’s NEWS file recommends Restart=on-failure or Restart=on-abnormal for long-running services. Check the installed service and execution manuals for exact directives, restart throttling, shutdown behavior, credential handling, and sandboxing. Configuration support and semantics can vary by version.

Do not treat a generic unit example as ready to paste: the correct FFmpeg arguments depend on your media, output mode, installed build, and secret-handling method. Keep the key out of the unit text and validate the final service configuration against the manuals on the target host.

Start, preview, and monitor the loop

  1. Start the service using the service name and commands appropriate to your installation, then inspect its systemd status and journal for startup errors, unreadable files, missing protocols, or encoder failures.
  2. Open the event in YouTube Live Control Room and wait for its incoming preview. Verify both picture and sound, including representative motion and audio from the source files.
  3. Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and warnings. If the event workflow requires it, click “Go live” in Live Control Room only after the preview is correct.
  4. Continue to monitor both FFmpeg’s logs and YouTube’s incoming stream. A running systemd unit only establishes that the process is alive; it does not prove the ingest, video, or audio is usable.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous playlist is not a promise of an indefinitely open event or unlimited archive: plan event boundaries and check current YouTube limits and workflow before relying on a long-running broadcast. See YouTube’s live-stream creation guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom What to check Next step
The service exits immediately systemd status and journal; FFmpeg arguments; absolute media paths; file permissions; available input and output protocols. Fix the first reported error, confirm the service account can read the media and secret, then restart and inspect the journal again.
systemd keeps restarting FFmpeg Whether FFmpeg is exiting because of a bad key, unreachable ingest, unsupported codec, invalid playlist, or unstable network. Correct the underlying failure before relying on automatic retries; use a delay and check restart-throttling behavior for the installed systemd version.
FFmpeg remains active but YouTube has no usable preview YouTube’s stream-health warnings, ingest URL and key, protocol support, outgoing codec settings, and available upload capacity. Confirm the event’s current credentials, test supported output settings, and distinguish a live process from a healthy stream.
Video arrives but audio is missing or wrong Source audio streams, chosen audio codec, channel layout, and YouTube’s incoming preview. Inspect the files and output mapping, use a supported audio format, and test actual sound before starting the event.
The playlist fails at a transition or when it wraps Differences in stream layout, codecs, and timestamps between files; concat demuxer behavior in the installed FFmpeg release. Test every transition, including the loop boundary. Prepare compatible files or choose an input workflow suited to the sources.
The stream drops while FFmpeg continues YouTube’s health indicators, network stability, and whether FFmpeg reports a successful ongoing output. Investigate ingest and application-level health; systemd cannot restart a process that has not exited merely because the stream is unusable.

Or let it run in the cloud
