To resume a 24/7 YouTube stream at the intended point after a server reboot, save or calculate the media player’s position yourself, restart the encoder against the existing YouTube stream, and verify the feed before changing the broadcast state. YouTube tracks the incoming stream and the viewer-facing broadcast as separate resources; its API does not automatically restore a file or playlist position.
Why a reboot can make the stream start over
YouTube does not manage the source player’s position in your video file or playlist. The liveStream resource represents the incoming audio-video feed, while the liveBroadcast resource represents the event viewers watch. The player or encoder on your server controls which content and timestamp it sends. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes these resources and their lifecycle, but does not prescribe a universal reboot-resume workflow.
That means a restarted player may begin at the file’s start even if the YouTube broadcast still exists. You need to restore the source position separately from checking YouTube’s broadcast status. Viewer DVR and archive controls affect viewer playback or recordings; they are not documented as a way to seek the originating player back to its previous position.
Choose what “the right point” means
Before building recovery logic, decide whether you want to continue the interrupted content or stay aligned with a schedule. Those are different policies and can produce different positions after an outage.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Recovery policy | How to choose the position | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Continue where playback stopped | Persist the current media identifier and offset within the file or playlist item; restore them after reboot. | The stream should finish the same content in order. | The stream falls behind any real-time schedule while the server is offline. |
| Catch up to a clock or event schedule | Persist the schedule reference and calculate the current offset from elapsed wall-clock time on boot. | Viewers should see what the schedule says is playing now. | Content may be skipped during downtime, depending on the schedule and calculation. |
These are implementation patterns, not behaviors guaranteed by YouTube. For a playlist, the saved state generally needs both the current item and its offset. Decide what should happen if the file, playlist order, or scheduled item changes while the server is down.
Set up source-state recovery before the next reboot
- Identify the source state to preserve. Record a stable media or playlist-item identifier, the offset within that item, and any clock or schedule reference needed by your chosen policy.
- Store it somewhere that survives a reboot. Keep the state in durable storage available to the player on startup. YouTube does not specify a storage design for this; it depends on your server and playback software.
- Update it during normal playback. Save position often enough that a sudden shutdown does not lose an unacceptable amount of progress. The appropriate interval depends on your player and how much content you can tolerate replaying.
- Define missing or changed-media behavior. Specify what the player should do if saved state is absent, the referenced file is unavailable, or a playlist item has been replaced. Do not silently assume the old offset still points to the intended content.
Recover the stream after the server restarts
- Inspect the saved source position. On boot, restore the saved offset to continue the interrupted content, or calculate a fresh offset from elapsed time if your policy is schedule-based. For playlists, also restore or resolve the intended item.
- Check the existing YouTube resources before creating anything. Inspect the current broadcast and its bound stream. A reboot of the source does not by itself mean you need a new broadcast. The API separates these resources, so checking their current state first avoids an unnecessary create-or-transition action.
- Restart the player or encoder against the existing stream configuration. Start sending the feed to the stream already associated with the broadcast, using the stream key configured for your encoder. YouTube’s API documentation does not specify commands for a particular server OS, encoder, or playlist application.
- Wait until YouTube receives the feed. Check the bound stream’s
status.streamStatusand wait foractive. YouTube says this indicates its servers are receiving data from the encoder correctly. The Life of a Broadcast guide describes this check. - Check the broadcast lifecycle state. If an explicit state change is needed, request a valid transition for the broadcast’s current state only after the stream is active. YouTube supports transitions to
testing, live, andcomplete; transitions totestingorliverequire an active bound stream, andtestingalso requires the broadcast monitor stream to be enabled. - Poll for the transition to finish. A transition can take several seconds and up to a minute, according to YouTube’s lifecycle guidance. This is transition timing guidance, not a guarantee about reboot recovery.
- Verify both sides of the recovery. Confirm the player is at the intended content timestamp, then check the viewer-facing YouTube playback. An
activestream confirms YouTube is receiving a feed; it does not prove that the source player sought to the right point.
If the broadcast is stuck during a transition
YouTube’s API overview says that if a broadcast remains stuck in testStarting or liveStarting, delete and recreate the broadcast, bind it to the stream, and continue the lifecycle process. Treat this as a response to those stuck transition states—not as the default action after every server reboot. Check the stream and broadcast statuses first.

Common recovery problems
- The video starts at the beginning. The source player likely started without restoring its saved offset. Check that the saved state persisted across reboot and that startup logic applies it before playback begins.
- The playlist resumes on the wrong item. Saving only a timestamp is not enough when the playlist can advance or change. Persist and validate the item identity as well as its offset.
- YouTube does not show the stream as active. The encoder may not be sending data to the bound stream yet. Confirm that the player is running and the stream configuration is correct, then check
status.streamStatusagain. - The stream is active but viewers see the wrong point. YouTube receiving video does not validate the source offset. Check the player state and monitor actual viewer playback.
- The broadcast remains in
testStartingorliveStarting. Follow YouTube’s documented stuck-transition recovery: delete and recreate the broadcast, bind it to the stream, and proceed from the appropriate state. - The broadcast appears live, but viewers cannot rewind to earlier footage. DVR and recording availability concern the broadcast’s viewer and archive settings, not the source player’s recovery position. Review the relevant broadcast settings and channel permissions.
