YouTube accepts encoder-based streams, and the video feed does not have to come from a physical camera. For a stream intended to stay live around the clock, plan for monitoring, recovery, content rights, and YouTube’s archive limit before you start.
What you need for a camera-free aquarium stream
YouTube receives a video feed from an encoder; that feed can be pre-rendered or generated rather than captured by a camera. YouTube lists encoder streaming as a supported method, and OBS documents software streaming as an option. A dedicated hardware encoder is another possibility, not a requirement for a simple ambience broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guide describes encoder workflows, while OBS’s streaming guide covers its software option.
- A visual source: an original aquarium animation, rendered scene, or footage you have permission to use.
- Audio: original ambience or audio licensed for livestreaming and, if needed, replay.
- An encoder: software such as OBS on a computer, or optional hardware if your production needs justify it.
- A verified YouTube channel: YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days.
- A monitoring and recovery plan: someone or something must detect and respond to a frozen image, missing sound, encoder failure, or internet outage.
YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events, but its guidance does not make dedicated hardware mandatory. The available documentation does not establish a universal cost, reliability, or endurance advantage for hardware over software; choose based on your equipment, setup comfort, quality needs, and ability to monitor and recover.

Prepare the aquarium video
Create an original visual, render a scene, or obtain permission for any footage you did not make. Prepare a continuous video feed for the encoder; a physical camera is not necessary when the feed already exists as video.

Clear the audio rights
Use audio you created or have permission to livestream. If you want an archived replay, make sure your rights also cover that use. Keep license records and check the covered territories and uses.

Choose your encoder
Set up a software encoder such as OBS on a computer, or use a dedicated hardware encoder if it suits your production. YouTube supports encoder-based streaming without requiring one specific product.

Check channel eligibility and configure YouTube Live
Verify the channel and confirm it has no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. In YouTube Live Control Room, set up the event and encoder, then check the preview before going live. Confirm the stream appears on both the channel and watch pages. See YouTube’s setup instructions.

Test monitoring and recovery
Run a test stream and inspect both audio and video. Decide how you will notice a frozen image, silent audio, an encoder crash, or a network outage, and how you will restart the stream. A 24/7 goal requires ongoing monitoring; simply starting an encoder does not ensure that it will remain healthy indefinitely.

Plan for the broadcast archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a complete record, make a local recording and do not rely on the YouTube replay to contain the full continuous broadcast. YouTube’s archive guidance explains this limit.
Protect the stream from copyright interruptions
You are responsible for obtaining the rights needed for everything in the broadcast, including music. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder image, warn you, and interrupt or terminate the broadcast if the content remains. Even licensed material may require the channel to be added to the rights holder’s Content ID allowlist. Check YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance, and confirm that each license covers livestreaming, relevant territories, and any replay you plan to keep.

Understand monetization and repeated footage
A looped ambience stream is not guaranteed to qualify for monetization. YouTube’s policy says repetitive or mass-produced content with little variation or added value may not be eligible. Reused-content review is separate from copyright enforcement: having permission to use footage or audio does not by itself establish monetization eligibility. Make the originality and viewer value of your production clear rather than assuming a simple repeated loop will earn revenue. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
