A beacon projects a vertical beam and grants a selected status effect to players inside its active area. It is not enough to craft the block: the beacon must sit on a correctly built pyramid, have access to the sky, and be configured through its interface. A damaged or incomplete pyramid can weaken the effect or stop the beacon entirely.
Beacon construction has three separate jobs:
- Craft the beacon: combine glass, obsidian, and a Nether Star.
- Build the base: use filled layers of iron, gold, emerald, diamond, and/or netherite blocks.
- Configure the effect: select a power and insert an accepted payment item.
Keeping those jobs separate makes troubleshooting easier. A perfect recipe cannot compensate for an obstructed sky path, and a complete pyramid will not grant an effect until a power is selected.

Materials and prerequisites
Items for the beacon block

The Nether Star is the bottleneck for most survival players because it requires a Wither fight. Gather the five glass and three obsidian before the fight so the beacon can be crafted as soon as the star is secured.
Blocks for the pyramid
The base accepts blocks made from iron, gold, emerald, diamond, and/or netherite. The blocks may be mixed in the same pyramid; the beacon does not require a single material throughout. Ingots, gems, and loose diamonds do not substitute for the required mineral blocks in the structure.

After the pyramid is built, the beacon interface accepts one iron ingot, gold ingot, diamond, emerald, or netherite ingot when you apply a power. Keep at least one of these items available when testing a newly built beacon.
How to craft the beacon
- Defeat the Wither. Collect the Nether Star it drops, then gather five glass blocks and three obsidian blocks.
- Open a crafting table. The beacon recipe requires the full 3×3 crafting grid.
- Place the ingredients in this pattern:
- Top row: glass, glass, glass
- Middle row: glass, Nether Star, glass
- Bottom row: obsidian, obsidian, obsidian
- Take the beacon from the result slot. If no result appears, count the ingredients again: the recipe uses exactly five glass, three obsidian, and one Nether Star.
The beacon is now a placeable block, but it has no active power until it is installed on a mineral-block pyramid and configured.
Build the beacon pyramid
A beacon activates with a minimum filled 3×3 layer. The maximum structure has four layers, expanding downward from 3×3 to 5×5, 7×7, and 9×9. Place the beacon on the center block of the smallest, uppermost layer.

The totals are the sums of the square layers: 9; 25+9; 49+25+9; and 81+49+25+9. They count only the mineral blocks, not the beacon itself.

Constructing a level-one beacon
- Lay nine valid mineral blocks in a solid 3×3 square.
- Place the beacon on the center block of that square.
- Check the beam and open the beacon interface. If the structure is filled and the sky path is clear, the minimum pyramid can activate.
A level-one base is useful when resources are limited or when you want to test the location before committing to a larger build.
Constructing the full four-layer pyramid
- Build a solid 9×9 layer at ground level.
- Center a solid 7×7 layer directly on top of it.
- Center a solid 5×5 layer above the 7×7 layer.
- Finish with a solid 3×3 layer.
- Put the beacon on the center block of the 3×3 top layer.
The result is a stepped, solid pyramid with 164 mineral blocks. Do not hollow out the interior or leave gaps: every layer must be filled.
Choosing pyramid materials
Mixing materials lets you build around your inventory rather than waiting for one resource. Iron is commonly practical for a first base because large quantities can be accumulated, while emerald, diamond, and netherite blocks generally represent a much larger resource commitment. Gold can be used wherever you have surplus gold. The beacon checks the block types, not whether every layer matches visually.
For a permanent headquarters, use a material pattern that makes missing blocks obvious. For example, an outer ring of one material and an inner field of another creates a visual maintenance guide. Cosmetic patterns do not replace solid coverage, however; a decorative ring with an empty center will not count as a completed layer.

Give the beacon access to the sky
The beacon needs an unobstructed view upward. Opaque blocks above it can prevent the beam and effects from activating. Transparent blocks, including glass, may remain in the path, so you can build a glass roof or an enclosed room without necessarily disabling the beacon.
When diagnosing a new installation, temporarily remove every block directly above the beacon until the beam appears. Once it works, replace only transparent blocks and test again. This isolates a roof, mountain, floor, or accidental construction from other problems with the pyramid.

Activate a power in the beacon interface
- Open the beacon. Interact with the beacon block to display its power-selection screen.
- Choose a primary effect. The current named effect set is Speed, Haste, Strength, Resistance, and Regeneration.
- Insert one accepted payment item. Use an iron ingot, gold ingot, diamond, emerald, or netherite ingot in the payment slot.
- Confirm the selection. The effect will not apply merely because the icon is highlighted; complete the interface confirmation.
The labels and available secondary choices can differ between game editions and pyramid levels. Select from the options actually shown in your interface rather than assuming that every version exposes identical controls. The primary task-based recommendations below apply to the named powers themselves.
Which beacon power is best?
There is no universally best effect. Pick the power that removes the biggest delay or danger in the area where the beacon operates.

These are task-based recommendations, not an official in-game ranking. Haste is the strongest general-purpose choice for a mining or excavation base because it directly targets block-breaking time. Speed is more valuable in a base that functions as a network of long walking routes. Resistance is the defensive pick, Strength the offensive pick, and Regeneration the healing pick.
Mining and building projects
Choose Haste when the beacon will sit beside a quarry, a tunnel network, or a large construction site. Place it where you will spend most of the clearing session, not merely where the final building will stand. If the project later changes to routine transport, switching to Speed may produce more practical benefit than expanding the pyramid.
Farms and transportation hubs
Choose Speed when players repeatedly cross the same area to harvest, unload, craft, and return. A beacon beside a central path can serve several nearby work zones. Keep the route open and mark the active area so players do not mistake a decorative, inactive beacon for a working travel station.
Combat zones
Use Strength for an arena where melee damage is the limiting factor. Use Resistance instead when surviving incoming damage is the limiting factor—for example, near explosions or hostile projectiles. If the same site alternates between fighting and recovery, plan separate beacons or change the selected effect between activities.

Healing stations
Regeneration suits a fixed location where players remain for a while and want steady recovery. It is less useful if the player’s main problem is reaching the destination or breaking blocks quickly. Build the station beside a safe room, then verify the effect before entering a dangerous area.
One beacon or several?
A single beacon is the simplest design and the least expensive in Nether Stars and mineral blocks. Start with one at the activity that matters most, then expand the pyramid or add another beacon only when a new area has a different job.
Several beacons are useful when a base has separated zones—for example, Haste at a quarry, Speed along a travel hub, and Resistance at a defensive wall. Each additional beacon requires its own crafted beacon and its own valid placement. Overlap can make a large base more convenient, but it also increases the mineral-block and Nether Star cost.

Because exact Java and Bedrock range and secondary-power rules vary, do not design a multi-beacon layout from an assumed universal radius. Place a test beacon, walk through the intended work area, and watch for the effect indicator. Extend or reposition the installation if the effect drops out at a frequently used workstation or path.

Place stained glass above the beacon to tint its beam. This changes the visible color without replacing the beacon or its pyramid. Use colored glass to identify different stations: for example, one color for mining, another for travel, and a third for combat.
If the beam color is wrong, remove the stained-glass block and check the beam again. A misplaced, differently colored, or stacked glass block can change the result. Transparent glass is allowed in the sky path, but the block directly above the beacon determines the visible tint, so test one color at a time when diagnosing a display problem.

Troubleshoot a beacon that is not working
No beam and no effects
- Confirm that the pyramid has a completely filled 3×3 top layer at minimum.
- Check that the beacon is centered on the top layer rather than sitting beside it or on an edge.
- Remove opaque blocks above the beacon. Glass and other transparent blocks can remain.
- Inspect every layer for a missing block, a gap, or a block moved during construction.
A missing block can invalidate the structure even when the pyramid looks complete from a distance. Walk around each side and inspect the underside of overhanging layers.
The beam appears, but the power is absent
- Open the beacon interface and select an effect.
- Insert an iron ingot, gold ingot, diamond, emerald, or netherite ingot into the payment slot.
- Confirm the selection instead of closing the screen immediately.
A visible beam alone does not prove that an effect has been selected and paid for.
The effect suddenly becomes weaker
Look for a missing or moved pyramid block. Damage from mining, explosions, or rebuilding can reduce the active level. Replace the correct mineral block, then reopen the interface and verify the effect. If the structure was reduced from several layers to only a 3×3 base, the beacon may still function but at a lower level.
The beam color is incorrect
Remove the stained-glass block above the beacon and check the uncolored beam. If it returns, reinstall the intended stained glass by itself. This distinguishes a color problem from a sky-access or pyramid problem.
The beacon works in one place but not another
Check the second location independently. A beacon cannot compensate for an obstructed sky path or an incomplete base at a different site. Compare the two installations layer by layer, then test the effect while standing at the workstation or path where you need it rather than directly beside the beacon.

Early survival test
Build a level-one 3×3 base from whatever valid mineral blocks you can spare. Clear the sky path, select Haste for a nearby excavation, and confirm that the interface accepts your payment. This proves the location and workflow before you invest in the 164-block full pyramid.
Permanent mining headquarters
Use a full four-layer pyramid at the center of the quarry or tunnel entrance. Mark the 9×9 footprint with a contrasting material so repairs are visible, leave the vertical path above the beacon open or glazed with transparent blocks, and select Haste while excavation is the priority.
Multi-zone base
Place separate beacons at the mining area, transport hub, and defensive perimeter. Assign a distinct stained-glass color to each station. This makes it clear which beacon serves which task and reduces accidental travel to the wrong effect zone. Add stations only after the first beacon’s location has been tested on foot.
A note about the 20×20×14 dimension
Minecraft Wiki advancement documentation describes a 20×20×14-block cuboid associated with the beacon advancement. That is an advancement-mechanics dimension, not a universal statement of every beacon effect’s radius. Do not use it as a substitute for checking the effect indicator in your edition and build; Java and Bedrock range and secondary-power behavior can differ.
