Google Playground lets you describe a browser game in plain text, play the generated result, and refine it with conversational requests. To work directly with the source, export the project ZIP and edit its HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and assets in a code editor; Playground’s documented workflow does not confirm that externally edited files can be imported back.
How do I make a game with Google Playground?
Playground is an experimental, browser-based game creation platform. You start with a written description, generate a game, and can test it before asking for changes. Google also describes guided creation flows and the option to upload reference photos to help shape the visual direction. See the Playground Help Center and Google’s launch announcement for the platform’s current description.
Describe a small playable loop
A compact idea is easier to specify and evaluate than a game with many systems. Include the genre, what the player does, the objective, how a round ends, and one visual direction. For example: “Make a one-screen arcade game where the player moves left and right to catch falling objects, earns points for each catch, and loses a life after a miss. Use bright, simple pixel-art visuals.” This is an illustrative prompt, not an official example or a guarantee of a particular result.
Generate, then play it
Use the creation flow to submit your description and generate the game, then try the result yourself. Check whether the controls behave as expected, the objective is understandable, and the game has a workable end or restart path. Generated results can need correction; Google’s description of the conversational flow is not a promise that every prompt produces a complete or bug-free game.

Playground access and creation availability are not identical. The Help Center says catalog games can be played free of charge. At launch, Google described access for people 18 or older in the United States, with game generation rolling out in phases. The Help Center describes limited weekly free-tier tokens and higher weekly token limits with a Google One AI plan; free-tier users may need to join a waitlist for creation access, while subscribing can unlock immediate access. Availability and plan terms may change, so check the Help Center for current details rather than assuming creation is available everywhere.
How do I edit a game in Playground?
- Open Your Games and select the game you want to change.
- Click its pencil or edit icon to open the Creation Studio.
- Describe one change in conversational language, such as “show the score at the top left” or “end the round after three misses.”
- Play the updated game and check both the requested change and any nearby behavior it might affect.
Playground’s documented editing method is conversational: you ask for changes to game logic, graphics, or rules. Google recommends making requests clear and focused rather than combining many complex changes in one prompt. For instance, adjust movement speed in one request, test it, and then change the scoring rule separately. The examples above illustrate that approach; they are not official sample prompts.

Retest the parts your change could affect
After each revision, try the relevant controls, scoring, round-ending condition, and restart path. Check the game on the device or screen size you intend to use, and make sure a change has not broken a rule that previously worked. This is a practical manual check, not a claim that Playground provides automated testing.
Can I download the code?
Yes. In the Creation Studio, choose Export (Download Zip). Google says the ZIP includes the game’s HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and generated asset files. You can keep the archive as a copy of the project or open the files in an external code editor.

The Help Center documents exporting source files, but does not establish a workflow for importing an externally edited project back into Playground. Treat export as a way to continue working outside the service, not as a confirmed round-trip editing feature.
Can I edit the generated code myself?
You can edit the exported files in a separate code editor, but that is different from editing inside Playground. Playground’s in-product refinement is conversational; exported source gives you files to inspect and change directly. Editing source requires working with the project’s HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and assets, and the available sources do not establish that changes made externally can be brought back into Playground.

Google AI Studio Build mode is a separate product, not a Playground feature. Its documentation describes a Code tab for direct edits, a live preview, ZIP export, and GitHub synchronization. Those options may suit a different project workflow, but should not be confused with Playground’s documented game-editing controls. See the Google AI Studio Build mode documentation.

If you edit a game that is already published, the changes remain a private draft until you explicitly publish again. The existing published version remains playable while you work. When you publish the updated game, it is checked against Playground’s Community Guidelines. Google says creators can keep games private, share them by link, or publish them to the Explore gallery; choose the visibility that fits your intent.

Multiplayer is described by the Help Center as an early preview. Global platform leaderboards are unavailable for multiplayer games, so do not assume that a multiplayer project has the same leaderboard features as other games.
What to know about Playground’s status
Google describes Playground as an early experiment. Its October 7, 2026 launch announcement says a Unity Spark integration is planned and that Unity Spark is in testing; it is a future direction, not a currently documented Playground workflow. Product access and features can evolve, so verify current details in the Help Center and on Google Labs Playground.
