If you found a suspected game leak, report its exact location to the game publisher or the platform hosting it. Unless you own the relevant copyright or are authorized by its owner, send an ordinary tip—not a DMCA takedown notice. In the United States, a formal DMCA notice must go to the service provider’s designated agent or official DMCA channel and include specific legal statements.
Choose the right reporting route
Your role determines whether you should send a tip or submit a formal copyright notice. The U.S. Copyright Office says only a copyright owner or the owner’s authorized agent can submit a DMCA takedown notice.
| Route | Who should use it | Where it goes | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Informal tip or platform report | Someone who found the material but lacks authority to act for the copyright owner | The publisher or rightsholder’s official contact, or the platform’s ordinary report function | Alerts the relevant organization to the location and facts without making a DMCA declaration. |
| DMCA takedown notice | The copyright owner or an authorized agent | The host or platform’s designated DMCA agent or official DMCA form | Requests action under the U.S. DMCA and requires specified identifications, statements, contact details, and a signature. |
Do not claim to own the game’s copyright or to represent its owner unless that is true. If you are unsure whether you have authorization, use the informal reporting route or ask the rightsholder.
How to report a suspected leak as a player or observer
- Save the specific location. Copy the direct URL to the post, page, file-sharing location, or other material. Include identifying details that will help the publisher or platform find it. Avoid reposting or redistributing the suspected leak to document it.
- Use an official channel. Check the publisher or rightsholder’s official website for a reporting, legal, or security contact. If the material is on a platform, use that platform’s ordinary report function. For an anonymous or unofficial mirror, report the location to the publisher and, if you can identify it, the hosting service.
- Describe what you found, not a legal conclusion. Identify the game, the material or activity, where it appears, and why you believe it may be unauthorized. Do not assert that you are the copyright owner or submit a perjury declaration.
- Keep a record of your report. Retain the URL and any confirmation or case number. A tip alerts the organization; it is not itself a formal DMCA notice or a guarantee that the material will be removed.
How a rightsholder or authorized agent files a DMCA notice
For a U.S. DMCA request, identify the service provider responsible for the online location and send a written notice to its designated agent. You can look up a registered agent in the U.S. Copyright Office’s DMCA Designated Agent Directory, or use the DMCA contact or form the service publishes. A general government contact or an ordinary user-report form is not a substitute for the provider’s designated DMCA channel.

Under 17 U.S.C. § 512(c)(3)(A), a notification of claimed infringement is a written communication to the service provider’s designated agent. The notice should include these six elements:
- Authorized signature: A physical or electronic signature of the copyright owner or a person authorized to act for the owner.
- Identification of the copyrighted work: Name or describe the protected game material. If one notice covers multiple works, identify them in a representative list as the statute allows.
- Identification and location of the challenged material: Describe the material or activity claimed to be infringing and provide information reasonably sufficient for the provider to locate it. Direct URLs are useful when available.
- Your contact information: Provide information sufficient for the provider to contact you, such as an address, telephone number, and email address.
- Good-faith belief statement: State that you have a good-faith belief the complained-of use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
- Accuracy and authority statement: State that the information in the notice is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you are authorized to act for the owner of the allegedly infringed exclusive right.
The Copyright Office explains the notice requirements in its Section 512 FAQ. A platform’s form may organize the fields differently, but it does not remove the need for a truthful basis and the required statements.

Keep the claim narrow and accurate
Identify the specific game content and online locations at issue rather than making a broad claim about every discussion, image, or file connected to a leak. A leak may involve different material—such as game code, video, screenshots, or a build—and whether a particular use infringes copyright depends on the facts. The available information here cannot determine whether any specific leak is infringing.
Do not file a notice simply because a leak is unwanted, confidential, or damaging to a game’s launch. A DMCA notice concerns copyright infringement, and a knowingly material misrepresentation that material is infringing can expose the person who made it to liability for damages, costs, and attorneys’ fees. If the facts or your authority are uncertain, report the material as a tip instead of making formal legal declarations.

What happens after a DMCA notice—and what it does not mean
A substantially compliant notice can trigger a service provider’s action under the DMCA’s safe-harbor framework. The Copyright Office describes the provider’s obligation as acting “expeditiously,” but the statute does not set one universal number of hours or days for an initial removal. A takedown is part of a notice process, not a court ruling that infringement occurred.
The person whose material was removed may submit a counter-notice if they believe removal resulted from mistake or misidentification. Under 17 U.S.C. § 512(g)(2)(C), after receiving a counter-notice, the provider generally replaces the material or restores access no earlier than 10 and no later than 14 business days afterward, unless it first receives notice that the copyright owner has filed an action seeking a court order. That statutory window concerns a counter-notice; it is not a promised deadline for an initial takedown.

Scope: U.S. procedure, not a worldwide rule
This process describes the U.S. federal DMCA route. Copyright law is territorial, and other countries may use different notice procedures. The rightsholder contact, platform form, and legal status of a particular game leak depend on the service, jurisdiction, and facts involved.
