To make a CurseForge modpack multiplayer, either host a server through CurseForge’s supported server service or set up the modpack’s server files yourself. Then have every player use a compatible copy of the same modpack release. Players on your home network can connect locally; players elsewhere need a public route to a self-hosted server or a hosted server.
Choose how to host
A CurseForge profile is a client-side game setup, not a multiplayer server by itself. For a persistent shared world, choose a hosted server or run server software on a computer you manage. A LAN world is a simpler option for a short session with people on the same network.

Host through the CurseForge app
CurseForge’s support guide, modified September 8, 2026, describes its server service as powered by Shockbyte, with billing handled by Tebex. Its compatibility and features can change, so check the app before choosing a pack or plan.

- Select a modpack that has a matching server pack. If several server ZIPs or versions are offered, choose the one corresponding to the modpack release you intend to play.
- Choose a plan and region, enter a server name, and complete checkout.
- When the server is ready, share its link or import code with friends. They can import the server profile in the app to get the modpack and connection details, then install the matching pack and join. Importing the profile does not buy or transfer ownership of the server. The link or code expires; use the expiration date shown in the sharing dialog.
The support guide’s stated Join feature applies to game versions above 1.20.1 at the time of that guide. Confirm that your chosen version is supported in the app.

Set up a server on your own computer
Start with the server pack for the exact modpack release when one is available. CurseForge defines a server pack as “a specially prepared version of your modpack that allows it to be run on a multiplayer server.” Not every modpack author publishes one.

- Open the modpack’s CurseForge project page, inspect its files, and look under Additional Files for a server pack. Check that it matches the pack version you plan to use.
- Create a folder for the server and extract the server pack into it. Follow any included setup instructions, including requirements for Java, the mod loader, or configuration.
- Run the included start file. On first launch, the server may generate files and stop. Follow the EULA prompt and restart it as the pack’s instructions direct.
- Keep the server process running while anyone is playing. A self-hosted world is unavailable when the host computer or server process is off.
- Have every player install and launch the matching Minecraft version, modpack release, and mod loader. Similar pack names do not guarantee compatibility.
If the pack has no server pack, CurseForge’s guide advises using the appropriate official loader installer or other server setup instructions for a custom deployment. Exact Java, operating-system, and memory requirements depend on the pack; follow its own server instructions rather than assuming one setup fits every modpack.

Let players connect
Same computer or local network
On the host computer, connect to a dedicated server using localhost. Another device on the same network uses the host computer’s local IP address and the server port. If you open a single-player world to LAN instead, another player may need to select Multiplayer and use Direct Connection with the host’s internal IP address and the LAN port shown by the game; the world may not appear automatically in the server list.
Players outside your network
A LAN address does not make a world reachable over the public internet. For a self-hosted server, remote players need a public route to it; port forwarding is one way to provide access, but the exact router and ISP setup varies. If you do not want to configure public access or keep a home machine running, use a hosted server instead.

Fix common connection problems
- Friends cannot join: Check that the server is running and that they have the correct address and port. For self-hosting, confirm remote players have a public route to the server; a local IP only works on the same network.
- Version mismatch or rejected mods: Compare the exact Minecraft version, modpack release, and loader on the server and every client.
- No server pack is listed: The pack author may not have published one. Use the appropriate loader installer or the pack’s custom server instructions instead.
- The hosted server uses the wrong pack version: Review which server ZIP you selected, especially if the modpack offers more than one.
- The hosted server is still provisioning: CurseForge’s guide advises checking the management panel for provisioning errors. It says to contact Shockbyte support if setup remains stuck for more than five minutes; this is vendor troubleshooting guidance and may change.
