To make a Factions server, run a Java Edition server on Paper, accept Minecraft’s EULA, install a version-compatible Factions plugin such as FactionsUUID, configure claims and permissions, then secure and test the network before inviting players. The exact Minecraft, Paper, Java and plugin versions must be treated as one tested set; copying an old plugin JAR into a newer server is a common cause of failure.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
A Factions server is a survival multiplayer server where players organize into factions, claim chunks or territories, protect their bases, form alliances, declare enemies and compete for land. The reliable build order is: choose Java Edition, create a clean server directory, run Paper, accept the EULA, install FactionsUUID and its dependencies, configure gameplay, open the network carefully, and test with a non-operator account.

What you need before starting
- Minecraft: Java Edition. The official dedicated-server download described by Minecraft is for Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition. A compatible Java Runtime Environment is required to launch the server JAR.
- A host computer or managed server. A home computer gives you control but makes you responsible for firewall rules, router configuration, uptime, backups and security. A managed host can handle much of that administration but still requires you to choose compatible versions and maintain the plugin configuration.
- A matching Paper build. Paper is a Java server implementation focused on performance and plugin support. Select a Paper build for the same Minecraft version you intend to run.
- FactionsUUID or another compatible Factions implementation. FactionsUUID provides faction creation, territory claims, protected land, alliances, enemies and warfare. Its release documentation is version-specific.
- Any supporting plugins you actually need. Permissions, economy, chat, map and protection integrations can change how Factions behaves. Add them one at a time and read their dependency and supported-version notes.
- A backup plan. Before installing plugins or upgrading, be able to restore the world folder,
server.properties, thepluginsdirectory and each plugin’s configuration.
Choose Java Edition and Paper
Why Java Edition matters
The official server JAR and the Paper ecosystem described here target Minecraft Java Edition. Players on another edition cannot be assumed to connect to this server without additional, separately supported compatibility software. Start by deciding the exact Minecraft release you will advertise, then select Paper and every plugin for that release.
Why Paper is a practical base
Paper supplies a server implementation and an API intended for administration and extensions. Its administration model treats plugins as the principal way to add commands and gameplay systems, which makes it a natural base for Factions. Paper does not provide faction mechanics by itself: claims, relations, faction chat and faction rules come from the Factions plugin and its integrations.

Do not choose versions independently
Think of the server as a compatibility set rather than a pile of individually “latest” downloads. Minecraft determines which Paper builds are valid; Paper determines the server API available to plugins; FactionsUUID and supporting plugins declare their own requirements. Read release notes before downloading and keep a record of the exact JAR names used in production.
Create the server directory and complete the first run
1. Make a dedicated directory
Create a folder used only for this server. Keeping the world, logs, configuration and plugins together makes backups and rollback possible. Do not run the server from a downloads folder that is routinely cleaned up.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
2. Place the Paper JAR in the folder
Download the Paper build that matches your selected Minecraft version and place it in the directory. Rename it to a simple name such as paper.jar if that makes your start script easier to maintain; record the original build number elsewhere so you can identify it during an upgrade.
3. Start it from a terminal
Open a terminal in the server directory and run:
java -jar paper.jar --nogui
The exact Java executable may differ by operating system. If the command is not found, install a Java Runtime Environment compatible with the Paper and Minecraft version you selected, then verify that the terminal is using that installation. Do not guess a Java version from an unrelated tutorial; check the requirements for your chosen Paper build.
4. Accept the EULA
The first run creates eula.txt and server.properties and then stops because the EULA has not been accepted. Open eula.txt, change:
eula=false
to:
eula=true
Save the file and start the same command again. You must accept the EULA yourself as the server operator; a plugin cannot substitute for that step.
5. Edit server.properties before inviting anyone
Stop the server cleanly, open server.properties, and set the identity and rules you want players to see. Review the MOTD, difficulty, PvP setting, spawn protection, online-mode policy, view and simulation distances, whitelist policy and the configured server port. Change one group of settings at a time, restart, and check the console for errors. Keep a copy of the original file so a bad edit can be reversed.

Install FactionsUUID on Paper
1. Shut the server down cleanly
Use the console stop command rather than closing the terminal or killing the process. A clean stop flushes world data and reduces the chance of a corrupted configuration.
2. Copy the plugin JAR
Download the FactionsUUID release that explicitly supports your Minecraft and Paper versions. Put its JAR directly in the server’s plugins folder. Do not unzip the JAR and do not place it inside another subfolder unless the plugin documentation specifically requires that layout.
3. Start once and inspect generated files
Start Paper again. On the first plugin-enabled run, FactionsUUID creates its default configuration and data files. Read the console from the beginning of the startup sequence. A plugin that reports a missing dependency, an unsupported server version or a disabled module should be fixed before players join.
4. Install dependencies deliberately
Paper plugin metadata identifies dependencies and commands. If FactionsUUID or an integration requires a permissions, economy or library plugin, install the matching release rather than downloading an arbitrary “latest” file. Restart after each dependency so the console shows which change caused a problem.
Version matching: a concrete example
FactionsUUID release notes demonstrate why version matching must be explicit. The following facts are tied to the dated releases named in the documentation:
| Component or release | What is established | How to use that information |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft Java Edition | The official server download targets Java Edition and requires a compatible Java runtime. | Choose Java Edition first, then select Paper and plugins for that Minecraft release. |
| Paper | Paper is a Java server implementation with plugin support; the exact compatible build depends on the Minecraft version selected. | Use a Paper build whose supported Minecraft version is the one you will run. |
| FactionsUUID 4.3.0 | Release notes published November 25, 2025 state that it targets and requires Minecraft 1.21.10 and will not run on older Minecraft versions. | Do not install 4.3.0 on 1.21.9 or an older server. |
| FactionsUUID 4.6.0 | Release notes published June 28, 2026 describe additional upgrade and Vault-behavior changes; the supplied documentation does not state its exact Minecraft requirement. | Read the 4.6.0 release notes and dependency requirements before adopting it; do not infer compatibility from the version number alone. |
| Permissions, economy and chat integrations | Requirements vary by release and configuration. | Install a tested combination and check each plugin’s metadata and startup messages. |
These dates are not a promise that a release remains current forever. They are examples of why an old tutorial can be wrong even when its commands look familiar. Select a Minecraft version, Paper build, FactionsUUID release and supporting plugins as one tested set, and record the set before opening the server to the public.
Configure the Factions game
Faction creation and identity
After the plugin starts successfully, create a test faction and inspect the generated configuration before allowing public recruitment. Decide how faction names are formatted, whether descriptions are displayed, and which roles can invite, promote, demote, claim or modify faction settings. Use a naming policy that avoids impersonation and offensive text if the server is public.

The normal player workflow is built around Factions commands such as /f create <name>, faction information and faction-chat commands. Exact aliases and permission nodes can vary by FactionsUUID release, so confirm the command help shown by the installed version rather than copying aliases from a different release.
Claims, power and unclaiming
Claims are the heart of a Factions server. Test the complete lifecycle with a disposable faction:
- Create the faction and confirm that the player becomes its leader.
- Claim the current territory with the version’s claim command, then walk across the boundary to verify the claim display.
- Invite a second test account, accept the invitation, and check whether that member can build and access faction-controlled areas.
- Attempt to claim adjacent territory, then unclaim it and confirm that the land returns to the expected wilderness or prior state.
- Test what happens when a faction loses power, disbands or leaves claimed territory. Record the result in your rules so players understand the risk.
Set claim limits, power regeneration and loss rules conservatively until you have tested raids, deaths and inactivity. The correct values depend on your intended pace; the supplied documentation does not establish a universal balance or player-capacity number.
Safezone and warzone
Define neutral areas before launch. FactionsUUID support documents the claim forms:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →/f claim --faction safezone
/f claim --faction warzone
Use a safezone for places such as a spawn or trading area where ordinary faction conflict should not apply. Use a warzone for a deliberately contested area. Verify build, break, container, PvP and explosion behavior in both zones with a non-operator account; visual labels alone do not prove that every protection rule is working.
Relations and warfare
Test ally, truce and enemy relations with at least three accounts. Confirm which relation permits entry, whether friendly fire is blocked, how faction chat or name colors change, and what happens when a relation is removed. Test enemy behavior in a controlled arena before advertising raids. If another protection plugin also controls PvP or explosions, decide which system has authority and document that decision.
Permissions and operator separation
Never use an operator account as your only test. Create a normal player account and assign the permissions a faction leader, officer and member should have. Confirm that ordinary members cannot change server-wide settings, bypass claims or run administrative commands. Keep operator access limited to trusted administrators and avoid sharing credentials through chat or configuration files.

Chat and economy integrations
FactionsUUID includes built-in Paper chat integration that can be disabled when another chat plugin is being used. Choose one chat formatting path, then test public chat, faction chat, ally chat and private messages for duplicated prefixes or messages that appear in the wrong channel.
If you add an economy integration, test balances, faction creation fees, claim costs, payouts and refunds after a restart. The 4.6.0 release notes mention Vault-behavior changes, so recheck economy operations after upgrading to that release or any later release that changes the same integration.
Network access for friends and public players
Local testing first
Connect from the host computer or the same local network before changing router settings. This isolates plugin and server errors from internet routing problems. Confirm that the console shows a completed startup and that the test account can log in, create a faction and place a block in an unclaimed area.
Firewall and port forwarding
Remote players may require both a host-firewall rule and router port forwarding to the port configured in server.properties. The official Minecraft guidance warns that home-network setup changes network configuration and is not recommended unless the operator understands the implications. Only expose the server port you need, keep the operating system and Java runtime updated, and do not expose remote-administration services to the public internet.
Internet service providers may use carrier-grade NAT, which can prevent inbound connections even when a router rule appears correct. If friends cannot connect while local players can, check the host firewall, the router’s forwarding target, the server’s bind address and whether your internet connection provides a reachable public address. A managed host avoids most home-router work, but you still control the server’s whitelist, operator accounts and plugin security.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Self-hosting or managed hosting?
There is no universal winner. Choose based on the work you are prepared to own, not on an advertised player number or an unverified performance promise.
| Decision axis | Self-hosted at home | Managed Minecraft host |
|---|---|---|
| Java and version control | You install Java, Paper and every update; maximum control, maximum responsibility. | The host usually supplies a control panel or image, but you must still select compatible Minecraft, Paper and plugin versions. |
| Networking | You handle firewall rules, router forwarding and changing public addresses. | The provider generally supplies an internet-reachable endpoint, reducing local networking work. |
| Backups | You schedule, verify and store backups yourself. | Backup tools may be available; verify retention, restore procedure and whether plugin data is included. |
| Plugin management | Direct filesystem access and unrestricted installation, with all compatibility and security risks on you. | One-click installers may simplify deployment, but panel catalogs can lag behind releases and may restrict files. |
| Performance and capacity | Limited by your hardware, upload bandwidth and the ability to leave the computer running. | Depends on the assigned resources and host oversubscription; no universal capacity figure is established here. |
| Security | You maintain the operating system, Java, firewall and access controls. | The host may provide network protection and isolation, but your passwords, permissions and plugins remain your responsibility. |
| Support and recovery | You diagnose logs and restore backups without a provider help desk. | Support can help with platform issues; read what is and is not covered before relying on it. |
Security and operations checklist
- Use a strong, unique password for every operator and panel account; never paste credentials into faction chat or commit them to a shared script.
- Keep Paper, Java and plugins updated, but stage upgrades on a copy of the server first.
- Back up the world,
server.properties, permissions data, economy data and all FactionsUUID files on a schedule. Keep at least one backup away from the server machine. - Test a restore. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
- Use a whitelist while testing and remove it only when moderation and rules are ready.
- Review console logs for dependency, version and permission errors after every restart.
- Limit operator privileges and audit who can change claims, teleport, inspect inventories or restore data.
- Publish rules for raiding, exploits, alternate accounts, inactivity, warzone use and disputed claims before opening recruitment.
Test the complete player experience before launch
Run this sequence with an operator account and at least one ordinary account:
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
- Join with the ordinary account and confirm the MOTD, spawn protection and first-time instructions.
- Create a faction, set its name and description, invite a member and promote that member.
- Claim land, build and open a container. Leave the claim and verify that wilderness rules apply outside it.
- Log in as a non-member and attempt to place, break and open containers inside the claim. Protected land must reject unauthorized actions.
- Unclaim land and confirm the expected ownership and protection changes.
- Create safezone and warzone areas using the documented commands, then test building, PvP, containers and explosions in each.
- Set ally, truce and enemy relations and test entry, damage, chat and relation removal.
- Test faction chat with the built-in Paper integration enabled. If another chat plugin is installed, disable the conflicting integration and repeat the test.
- Restart the server and verify that factions, claims, relations, balances and permissions persist.
- Restore the backup to a separate test directory and confirm that the world and plugin data are usable.
Troubleshoot common failures
The server stops immediately after launch
Check the first error in the console, not only the final shutdown line. Confirm that Java can launch the selected Paper build, that eula=true is present, and that the JAR name in your start command matches the file on disk.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFactionsUUID is disabled or missing commands
Look for an unsupported Minecraft or Paper version, a missing dependency, a duplicate plugin JAR or a failed configuration parse. Remove duplicate copies, install the required dependency, restore the last known-good configuration and restart. Do not hide the warning by changing random settings.
Players can connect locally but not from the internet
Recheck the host firewall, router forwarding destination, server bind address and the port in server.properties. If the internet connection uses carrier-grade NAT, router changes alone may not make the server reachable; use a managed host or another network arrangement that provides inbound connectivity.
Claims do not protect blocks
Test with a genuinely separate, non-operator account. Confirm that the land is claimed by the intended faction, that the account is not an administrator, and that another protection plugin is not overriding FactionsUUID. Check faction and protection configuration after a clean restart.
Chat messages appear twice or in the wrong channel
Choose either FactionsUUID’s built-in Paper chat integration or the external chat plugin’s formatting path. Disable the integration when another chat plugin is responsible for formatting, then restart and test public, faction and relation chat again.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
An upgrade changes economy or claims behavior
Read the release notes for the exact FactionsUUID version, especially when moving to a release that changes upgrade or Vault behavior. Take a complete backup, test the upgrade on a copy, and keep the previous JAR and configuration available for rollback.
Maintain the server after launch
Schedule a maintenance window for updates and announce it to players. Before each change, record the current Minecraft, Paper, Java, FactionsUUID, permissions, economy and chat versions; make a backup; test the new set on a copy; then restart the live server and inspect the console. Never assume that a plugin update is independent of the server version.
Keep a short change log containing configuration edits, claim-rule changes, permission changes and restoration tests. When a player reports lost land or missing data, compare that log with the last verified backup rather than editing live files while the server is running.
A successful Factions launch is therefore less about finding one magic plugin JAR and more about maintaining a compatible, recoverable system: Java Edition, Paper, a version-matched Factions implementation, clearly tested protection rules, controlled network exposure and backups that you have actually restored.
