To make a sharp poster, match the pixels that remain after cropping to the finished print size, then follow the printer’s current color, file, bleed and proofing requirements. Calculate effective resolution by dividing the cropped pixel width and height by the corresponding dimensions in inches. Adobe describes 300 pixels per inch (ppi) as the industry-standard target for high-quality prints, but a lower value can be acceptable for a large poster viewed from farther away.
For game screenshots, cover art and other digital artwork, the order is straightforward: choose the physical size first, inspect the crop, calculate the limiting ppi, preserve the appropriate color profile, export to the selected provider’s specification and approve the preview before paying.

Start with the finished poster size
Do not begin by choosing an export preset. Begin with the printer’s available finished dimensions and the aspect ratio you want. A 24 × 36-inch portrait poster, for example, has a 2:3 ratio. Your source image may be 16:9, 4:3, square or an irregular digital-art canvas. When the ratios differ, the printer or your editing software must either crop part of the image or leave blank margins.

That decision affects both composition and sharpness. Cropping removes pixels, so calculate resolution from the pixels that remain after the crop—not from the original file’s dimensions. Keep faces, logos, text and important game characters away from the trim edge until you have checked the provider’s crop preview.

Choose crop or margins deliberately
- Crop to fill: the poster reaches every edge, but some of the original image is removed. The crop can also lower effective resolution because fewer pixels are spread across the same print area.
- Keep the entire image: the complete composition remains visible, but blank or colored margins may appear. Those margins can be designed rather than left as an accidental white border.
- Extend the canvas: you can add a matching background around a nonmatching image, but the added area must still satisfy the printer’s edge and bleed rules.
For a digital game poster, check whether HUD elements, subtitles or menu text fall close to the crop line. A crop that looks acceptable on a monitor can cut off a score, title or character once the printer trims the sheet.
Calculate effective resolution at the actual size
Effective resolution is the number of source pixels assigned to each inch of the final print. Calculate both axes:
Effective horizontal ppi = cropped pixel width ÷ poster width in inchesEffective vertical ppi = cropped pixel height ÷ poster height in inches
The lower of the two results is the limiting resolution. If the image is rotated, match the pixel dimension to the corresponding physical dimension after rotation. The calculation is a guide to available detail, not a guarantee of the final appearance; viewing distance, sharpening, paper and the printer’s process also matter.
Illustrative calculations
The following arithmetic shows how to use your own file measurements. These are examples, not universal minimums.
| Pixels remaining after crop | Finished size | Width calculation | Height calculation | Limiting effective resolution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6,000 × 4,000 | 24 × 16 inches | 6,000 ÷ 24 = 250 ppi | 4,000 ÷ 16 = 250 ppi | 250 ppi |
| 6,000 × 4,000 | 36 × 24 inches | 6,000 ÷ 36 ≈ 167 ppi | 4,000 ÷ 24 ≈ 167 ppi | ≈167 ppi |
| 4,000 × 3,000 | 24 × 18 inches | 4,000 ÷ 24 ≈ 167 ppi | 3,000 ÷ 18 ≈ 167 ppi | ≈167 ppi |
Use the pixel dimensions after every significant crop. If you crop a 6,000-pixel-wide file down to 4,500 pixels and still print it 36 inches wide, the width is now 125 ppi rather than the 167 ppi calculated from the uncropped file.
How many pixels does a 24 × 36 poster need?
Using the 300 ppi high-quality target, an uncropped 24 × 36-inch poster would require 7,200 × 10,800 pixels in the corresponding orientation. That is a target, not a promise that a smaller file will fail. It also leaves no allowance for a crop. If your source is smaller, consider a less aggressive crop, a smaller finished poster, a different image or the printer’s own resolution review before ordering.

What 300 ppi means—and when less can work
Adobe’s Photoshop documentation, updated December 2, 2025, states: “A resolution of 300 pixels per inch (ppi) is considered the industry standard for producing high-quality prints.” Treat that as a close-viewing benchmark. Adobe also recognizes that large-format prints viewed from a distance can work at lower resolutions.
A poster in a game room may be viewed from several feet away, while a small art print is likely to be examined much closer. The farther the normal viewing distance, the less noticeable individual pixels may be. Do not, however, use viewing distance as an excuse for an obviously undersized source when the image contains small lettering, fine line art or high-contrast edges.
Evaluate the file rather than the resolution label
A number in an image-information panel is not the same as available detail. A 72 ppi or 300 ppi label can describe the same pixel grid at different nominal sizes. What matters for the order is the pixel count divided by the selected physical dimensions. Changing only the resolution field does not create new texture, edges or facial detail; it changes how existing pixels are assigned to the print.
Inspect the source before editing
Open the original file, not a preview downloaded from a messaging app or social network. Look for evidence of prior compression, resizing or sharpening. Examine fine text, diagonal lines, hair, smoke and dark gradients at 100% view. These areas reveal damage sooner than a small fit-to-screen preview.
Preserve the best available source
- Use the original screenshot or artwork export rather than a thumbnail.
- Avoid repeatedly saving a JPEG while experimenting; each lossy save can alter edges and gradients.
- Keep a master copy before cropping, resizing or adding poster typography.
- Flatten or convert only when the selected provider’s specification requires it.
For game screenshots, capture at the highest native output available and avoid enlarging a small in-game image before you have checked its pixel dimensions. If the image includes interface text, verify that it remains legible at the intended physical size rather than relying on a monitor preview.
Resize and upscale with realistic expectations
If the effective ppi is below the printer’s recommendation, resizing software can produce a larger pixel grid, but interpolation estimates pixels; it does not recover detail that was never captured. Upscaling may make a file acceptable for a distant poster, especially when the source is clean and the artwork has broad shapes, but it cannot reliably restore tiny text, texture or a blurred face.
Before enlarging, compare alternatives:
- Print the same crop at a smaller physical size.
- Use a less aggressive crop so more original pixels remain.
- Select a higher-resolution source or a different frame of the artwork.
- Ask the provider whether its automated review accepts the file at the selected size.
Judge the enlarged file at 100% and at a simulated final-size view. A file can look smooth at 25% on a monitor while showing blocky edges at the distance where a viewer will read the poster.

Choose color settings with the printer, not by habit
There is no single color-space setting that every poster printer requires. Photo labs often ask for sRGB. Other providers specify a different profile or supply a soft-proofing workflow. Keep the profile embedded when possible and give the selected provider’s current instructions priority.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →sRGB, wider-gamut RGB and CMYK
sRGB is a common requirement for photo-lab workflows because it provides a predictable, widely supported RGB space. If your source was created in a wider-gamut RGB space such as Adobe RGB, do not discard that profile casually; first check whether the printer accepts it and whether it supplies a profile for soft proofing. Redcliffe Imaging’s guidance distinguishes everyday sRGB use from Adobe RGB when the source supports a wider gamut.
Do not automatically convert a photo poster to CMYK simply because the work will be printed. Some print workflows require CMYK, while many photo services expect RGB. An unnecessary conversion can change saturated game colors and may discard colors that the provider’s process could have handled. Convert only when the selected printer explicitly requests it or provides a controlled conversion workflow.
Embed the profile
An embedded profile tells the provider how to interpret the RGB numbers in the file. Without it, two systems may display or print the same numbers differently. When exporting, enable the option to embed the working profile unless the provider’s instructions say otherwise. If the printer supplies a soft-proof profile, use it to identify colors likely to shift before committing to the order.
Plan bleed, trim and the safe area
Bleed is the extra image area that extends beyond the intended trim line so a full-bleed poster does not show an unwanted white strip after cutting. The required amount is printer- and design-dependent; there is no universal bleed value for every provider or size.
Use the provider’s template
- Download the selected provider’s current template or read its file-preparation instructions.
- Set the document to the stated finished size plus the required bleed, if any.
- Extend backgrounds and edge-to-edge artwork through the bleed area.
- Keep faces, logos, captions and other critical details inside the marked safe area.
- Do not place a thin border exactly on the trim line; small cutting variation can make it look uneven.
If the provider does not publish a number, ask before exporting. A generic preset from another service may have the wrong canvas size or trim allowance.
Export to the selected provider’s specification
Confirm these items on the provider’s current requirements page or order screen:

The available workflows do not establish one universally best format for every photo poster. One service may accept a high-quality JPEG, another may prefer a TIFF or PDF, and a design-oriented workflow may require a flattened layout. Export exactly as the chosen provider requests instead of assuming that a familiar preset applies everywhere.
Keep a versioned export
Save the editable master separately from the upload file. Name the export with the final size and crop, such as game-poster-24x36-portrait-final, so you do not accidentally upload an earlier version. Reopen the exported file and verify its dimensions, orientation and embedded profile before uploading.

Use the online preview as a final technical check
Before payment, inspect the provider’s crop preview at every edge. Check that the poster is not rotated, that no important content crosses the trim line and that the service has not applied an unexpected crop to fit its selected ratio.
Pay attention to warnings
- Low-resolution warning: compare the warning with your effective-ppi calculation. If it is below the provider’s recommendation, choose a smaller size, reduce the crop or select another file.
- Crop warning: return to the editor and reposition the subject rather than accepting a cut-off face or title.
- Color warning: confirm the required profile and whether the provider offers a soft proof.
- Bleed or safe-area warning: move critical elements inward and extend only noncritical background through the edge.
If color matching is important, ask whether the service supplies a physical proof or a soft-proof profile. A monitor cannot reproduce every paper, ink and lighting condition, so a screen preview is not an independent guarantee of color.
Select paper, surface and mounting after the file passes
Paper and finish affect reflections, contrast and how fingerprints or handling show, but they cannot repair a low-resolution source. Establish the finished dimensions, crop and technical approval first. Then choose among the surfaces the provider actually offers.
- Gloss or lustre: can make colors appear vivid but may reflect room lighting.
- Matte: reduces glare and can suit posters viewed under strong lights, though the visual contrast may differ from a glossy surface.
- Uncoated or art stock: may provide a different tactile and color character; confirm that the provider supports it for the selected size.
Framing should match the finished print dimensions. A frame listed as a nominal size may not fit a poster with an unusual aspect ratio, border or mounting method. Rolled and flat shipping can also change how quickly the print is ready to hang; confirm the provider’s available options rather than assuming one method.
Troubleshoot common poster-print problems
The poster looks blurry or pixelated
Recalculate ppi from the pixels after cropping. If one axis is low, the limiting axis controls the result. Compare a smaller print, a wider crop or a higher-resolution source. Upscaling can help the file meet a technical upload requirement, but it cannot recreate missing detail.

The subject is cut off
The selected aspect ratio probably forced a crop, or the trim line moved closer to the artwork than expected. Return to the provider preview, change the crop position or choose a size with a closer ratio. Keep critical content inside the safe area and extend only background through the bleed.
Colors are dull, too dark or unexpectedly shifted
Check the embedded profile and the provider’s color-space requirement. Do not convert to CMYK by default. If the source uses a wider-gamut RGB profile, ask whether the printer accepts it or provides a conversion and soft-proof workflow. Review the image on a calibrated or consistently set display when color is important, then compare the provider’s proof options.
White strips appear along an edge
The file may not extend through the required bleed, or the printer may have applied a crop that exposed the canvas edge. Use the provider’s template, extend edge-to-edge artwork beyond the trim line and confirm the preview before ordering.

Small text may be too detailed for the source resolution or too close to the trim. Increase its size, simplify the lettering, move it into the safe area or choose a higher-resolution source. Judge readability at the intended viewing distance, not only while zoomed in on the editing screen.
The file is rejected at upload
Check the extension, file size, pixel dimensions, orientation and profile against the provider’s current requirements. Re-export from the master rather than repeatedly modifying the rejected file. If the requirements remain unclear, contact the provider before changing the color space or flattening the artwork.
A practical workflow for game screenshots and digital art
- Acquire the cleanest source: use the original screenshot or artwork export, not a compressed preview.
- Choose the poster size: select an available dimension and decide whether its ratio requires a crop or designed margins.
- Compose safely: place characters, logos, UI text and captions away from the trim line.
- Crop first, then measure: record the remaining pixel width and height and calculate both effective ppi values.
- Inspect at full size: look for compression blocks, jagged diagonals, banding and unreadable small type.
- Prepare color: keep the embedded profile and follow the selected printer’s RGB, CMYK or soft-proof instructions.
- Build bleed: use the provider’s template and extend only suitable background elements into the bleed.
- Export once to specification: use the requested format, dimensions and file-size limit.
- Approve the proof: verify crop, orientation, edge content, warnings and finish before payment.
Final pre-order checklist
- Finished width, height and orientation are confirmed.
- Crop or margins are intentional and match the provider preview.
- Pixel dimensions were measured after cropping.
- Both effective ppi values were calculated; the lower one was considered.
- The file’s color profile is embedded and accepted by the provider.
- CMYK conversion was performed only when specifically required.
- Bleed and safe-area rules come from the selected provider.
- Faces, text, logos and other critical details are inside the safe area.
- The export format and file size meet the current upload rules.
- A proof or soft-proof option was considered where color accuracy matters.
- Paper, finish, mounting and frame choices match the final dimensions.
The dependable method is not a universal preset. It is a size-specific check: measure the cropped pixels, calculate the limiting ppi, preserve the right profile, follow the printer’s template and approve the actual preview.
