In Minecraft Java Edition 1.21, craft a Mace by combining one Breeze Rod and one Heavy Core. The harder part is obtaining the Heavy Core: it comes from an Ominous Vault, while Breeze Rods drop from Breezes.
What you need to craft a Mace
- One Breeze Rod
- One Heavy Core
Mojang’s Java Edition 1.21 release notes confirm these ingredients but do not state a specific crafting-grid arrangement in the page text. The recipe is for Java Edition 1.21; the cited sources do not establish that recipe presentation or acquisition details are identical in every Minecraft edition.
How to get the ingredients
Get a Breeze Rod
Find and defeat a Breeze to obtain a Breeze Rod. Breezes are the source of the rod, as described in the Minecraft Tricky Trials feature article.
Get a Heavy Core
Obtain an ominous trial key and use it to unlock an Ominous Vault. Heavy Cores can be obtained from Ominous Vaults; Mojang’s feature article describes using an ominous trial key to unlock one. This makes the Heavy Core the more involved ingredient to acquire.

Craft the Mace
- Collect one Breeze Rod and one Heavy Core.
- Combine the two ingredients to craft the Mace. The Java 1.21 release notes confirm the ingredient list but do not specify a grid layout in their text.
How the Mace’s smash attack works
In Java Edition 1.21, a smash attack triggers when you fall more than 1.5 blocks before landing a hit. A successful hit resets your vertical momentum and negates accumulated fall damage. If you miss, the fall damage is not negated.
The extra smash damage depends on how far you fell, according to Mojang’s Java 1.21 release notes:

- For the first 3 blocks fallen: 4 additional damage per block.
- For the next 5 blocks: 2 additional damage per block.
- For each block after that: 1 additional damage per block.
A successful smash also knocks back nearby entities. Wind Charges can help launch you into a smash, but the strike still needs to connect to negate the accumulated fall damage.

Mojang lists these existing enchantments as applicable to the Mace: Mending, Unbreaking, Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Fire Aspect, and Curse of Vanishing. It also has three Mace-exclusive enchantments:

The Mace loses durability through use. You can repair it with Breeze Rods at an anvil.
