Minecraft 1.16.5 was released on January 14, 2021. Mojang described it as network-compatible with 1.16.4, but every client and server should still be deliberately set to 1.16.5 when you want predictable results.

This guide is for the Java Edition server, not Bedrock Edition. Mojang’s Java server software is free to download and requires a Java Runtime Environment capable of running the 1.16.5 JAR.
- A computer that can remain on while people play.
- A current, compatible Java installation and access to
java -versionin a command prompt or terminal. - The official Minecraft Java server JAR for version 1.16.5.
- A dedicated folder with permission to create files.
- Administrator access to change the host firewall and, for internet play, the home router.
- The host computer’s private LAN address if friends will connect from another device in the same home.
Keep the server folder separate from your game installation. The world, logs, operator list, whitelist, configuration, and backups will all be created there.

Choose vanilla or Paper first
Vanilla is Mojang’s base server implementation. Paper is a separate implementation intended for hosts that want its administration, performance, and plugin ecosystem. Both can target 1.16.5 clients, but they are not interchangeable files: download the server software that matches the way you intend to run the world.

If you only need a small private world with no plugin requirement, begin with vanilla. If a plugin requires Paper, install Paper in a separate test folder first rather than replacing a working world without a backup.

Set up a vanilla 1.16.5 server
1. Check Java and create the server folder
Open Command Prompt on Windows or a terminal on macOS or Linux and run:
java -versionThe command should print an installed Java version instead of an error such as “java is not recognized” or “command not found.” Mojang’s setup guidance says Java must be installed and up to date. If the command fails, install a suitable Java runtime, reopen the terminal so its PATH is refreshed, and run java -version again.
Create a folder with a simple path, such as Minecraft-1.16.5-Server. Avoid putting several unrelated server versions in one directory; mixing JARs, worlds, and configuration files makes recovery harder.
2. Download the matching server JAR
Use Mojang’s official Java server download page and select the server software for 1.16.5. Save the JAR directly in the new server folder. The file name may differ slightly from examples, so use the actual name shown in your download rather than assuming a renamed file.
The software is for Java Edition only. Do not place a Bedrock server executable or a different Minecraft release in this folder.

3. Run the first launch
Open a terminal in the server folder. On Windows, you can usually right-click the folder while holding Shift and choose an option to open a terminal there; on other systems, use cd to change into the folder. Run the JAR with the graphical interface disabled:
java -jar minecraft_server.1.16.5.jar noguiReplace the example file name if your downloaded JAR has another name. The first launch creates files such as eula.txt, server.properties, a world directory, and log files. It normally stops or refuses to continue until the EULA is accepted.
4. Accept the EULA
Stop the process if it is still running, then open eula.txt in a text editor. Change the value from:

eula=trueSave the file. Accepting this value records that you agree to Mojang’s End User License Agreement; it is not a substitute for reading the agreement or for complying with server rules and applicable law.
5. Configure server.properties
Open server.properties in a plain-text editor while the server is stopped. The server reads these settings during startup, so stop the server before changing them and restart it afterward. The following properties are the practical choices most small groups need:

Do not add quotation marks around ordinary values unless the file’s syntax requires them. Keep a backup of the original properties file before making substantial changes.
6. Start the configured server
Run the same command again:
java -jar minecraft_server.1.16.5.jar noguiLeave the console window open while the server is running. When startup completes, connect locally with localhost from the host computer’s Minecraft multiplayer screen. To shut down safely, type this command into the server console:

stopA clean stop saves the world before maintenance, configuration changes, or backups. Closing the terminal or killing the process can leave unsaved changes and is not a substitute for stop.
Let people on your home network join
First start the server and confirm that the host can connect with localhost. On another device connected to the same router, enter the host computer’s private LAN address in the multiplayer server address field. The address commonly looks like 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x; obtain the exact value from the host operating system’s network details.
A LAN connection does not normally require port forwarding, but the host firewall still has to allow Java or the configured server port. If the host has more than one network adapter, make sure the address you give friends belongs to the same network as their devices.
Let friends connect over the internet
1. Allow the server through the host firewall
Create an inbound firewall rule that permits the Java server or the TCP port configured in server.properties. The exact screens differ between operating systems and firewall products. Allowing only the required port is safer than disabling the firewall completely.
2. Give the host a stable private address
Your router must always forward the Minecraft port to the same computer. Use the router’s DHCP-reservation feature, if available, or otherwise ensure the host keeps the same private LAN address. If that address changes, an old forwarding rule can point to the wrong device.
3. Forward the Minecraft port in the router
Sign in to the router’s administration page and create a port-forwarding rule for the port shown in server.properties. For the default setup, forward TCP 25565 to the host computer’s private address. Router menus and terminology vary by manufacturer, so follow the router maker’s current instructions for creating a port-forward entry.
Do not forward a different external port by accident and then tell players to use 25565. If you choose a non-default external port, document the mapping and give players the external port that actually reaches the server.

4. Share the public address carefully
Players outside your home network connect with your public IPv4 address and port, in the form:
public-address:25565The host itself should continue using localhost, while people on the same LAN should use the host’s private address. Test from a genuinely external connection, such as a friend’s home network or a mobile connection; some routers do not support connecting back through their own public address from inside the LAN.
Mojang warns that exposing a home IP address creates a security risk. Share it only with people you trust, keep the firewall enabled, and stop forwarding the port when you no longer need outside access.

Paper is optional; it is not required for a vanilla world. Download a Paper JAR whose build explicitly targets Minecraft 1.16.5 and place it in its own server folder, or make a verified backup before using an existing world.

Paper’s documentation lists Java 16 for Paper 1.16.5. Check the runtime before launching:

java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar paper.jar --noguiThe -Xms4G and -Xmx4G values are example memory settings from the documented command, not a universal recommendation. They reserve and cap memory at four gigabytes, so a host with less available memory should not copy those values blindly. Choose values that leave enough memory for the operating system and other programs, and increase them only when the world and player load justify it.
Paper still needs its first launch, EULA acceptance, configuration, firewall treatment, and router forwarding. Select the correct JAR in the command, keep client versions aligned with 1.16.5, and check plugin compatibility before adding plugins.

Basic administration after setup
Grant operator access deliberately
Use the server console to grant operator privileges only to trusted administrators. Operator access can change the world and server settings, so do not give it to every player simply to solve a one-time building problem.
Back up while the server is stopped
Use the stop command, wait for the console to finish saving, and copy the entire server folder—or at minimum the world, configuration, and player-management files—to separate storage. Keep more than one dated backup so a corrupted or griefed world can be rolled back.
Change configuration in a controlled order
- Tell players the server will be offline.
- Run
stopand wait for a clean save. - Copy a backup of the server folder.
- Edit
server.propertiesor replace the server JAR. - Start the server and read the console for errors.
- Join with the host first, then ask another player to test the intended connection path.
Keep versions consistent
Set the launcher profile and the server software to 1.16.5 when that is your target. Mojang’s release note establishes network compatibility with 1.16.4, but that does not promise compatibility with every other 1.16.x release, later versions, mods, or plugins.
Troubleshoot the problems that stop most 1.16.5 servers
“java” is not recognized
Java is missing from the PATH, not installed, or the terminal was opened before installation finished. Install a compatible runtime, open a new terminal, and confirm that java -version prints a version. If several Java installations exist, check which executable the command is using before changing system settings.
The server exits immediately
Read the console output rather than repeatedly double-clicking the JAR. Confirm that eula.txt contains eula=true, that you are in the folder containing the JAR, and that the command names the correct file. A missing file, wrong path, or incompatible Java runtime will be reported in the console.

The server starts but friends cannot connect
- Confirm the server console is still running and has finished startup.
- Verify that the player is using Java Edition 1.16.5.
- Check that the firewall allows Java or the configured TCP port.
- Compare the router’s forwarding port with
server-port. - Confirm the forwarding destination is the host’s current private address.
- Make sure friends outside the home are using the public address and port, not the private LAN address.
- Test from an external network if the router cannot perform hairpin or loopback connections.
Local players can join, but internet players cannot
This pattern usually means the server itself is working and the problem is at the network boundary. Recheck the firewall and forwarding rule, verify the host’s private address has not changed, and check whether the internet provider places the home connection behind carrier-grade NAT. If the router does not have a usable public IPv4 address, ordinary inbound forwarding may not work; contact the provider or use a hosting arrangement designed for inbound connections.
The version is rejected
Set both the launcher profile and server to 1.16.5. The documented release note says 1.16.5 is network-compatible with 1.16.4, but the safest troubleshooting baseline is an exact version match. Remove or update mods and plugins that target another release.
Paper will not launch
Confirm that the downloaded JAR is a Paper build for 1.16.5 and that java -version reports the Java version required by Paper’s documentation: Java 16. Check the command’s file name and path, accept the EULA in that Paper folder, and read the first error in the console before changing memory values.
The world or settings appear unchanged
Stop the server before editing files and make sure you edited the folder that the launch command actually uses. A second copy of the JAR or a shortcut with a different working directory can create a separate world and properties file. The console’s startup path and the folder timestamps help identify which directory is active.

A safe first-day checklist
- Java responds correctly to
java -version. - The server JAR is explicitly version 1.16.5.
- The first launch created
eula.txtand you accepted it. server.propertiescontains the intended mode, difficulty, PvP setting, player limit, seed, MOTD, and port.- The host can join with
localhost. - LAN players can join with the host’s private address.
- The firewall allows the configured port.
- The router forwards the same port to the host’s stable private address.
- An external player has tested the public address and port.
- You know to use
stopbefore backups or maintenance.
