To make a vanilla Minecraft 1.17 Java server, install Java 16 or newer, download the matching 1.17 server JAR, run it once to generate its files, accept the EULA, configure server.properties, and run it again. Players on the same computer can use localhost; players on your home network use the host computer’s private IPv4 address; internet players need a firewall rule and router port forwarding, normally for TCP port 25565.

What you need before starting
This procedure is for Minecraft: Java Edition. The official server setup is not compatible with Bedrock Edition. Every player must use the same exact release as the server: a 1.17 client joins a 1.17 server, while a 1.17.1 client should use the separate 1.17.1 server JAR. Mojang released 1.17.1 as a follow-up release containing fixes, so do not substitute one JAR for the other.

- The official server JAR for 1.17 (or 1.17.1 if that is the version your group uses)
- A dedicated folder for the server and enough free storage for the world and backups
- Administrator access to the computer’s firewall and, for remote players, the home router
There is no authoritative RAM-per-player or bandwidth number specific to a vanilla 1.17 server. Actual needs change with view distance, simulation distance, player count, and how actively the world is explored. Start with the computer you have, watch its memory and CPU use, and reduce server distances or player count if it struggles.
1. Install and verify Java 16 or newer
Minecraft 1.17’s release notes specify Java 16 or above for custom Java setups and third-party launchers. A Java installation that is missing, not available on your command path, or older than 16 commonly causes “Java not found” or class-version errors.

- Install a Java 16-or-newer runtime or JDK for your operating system.
- Open a terminal, Command Prompt, or PowerShell window.
- Run
java -version. - Confirm that the reported major version is 16 or higher. If the command is not recognized, reinstall Java or add its installation directory to the system
PATH.
Use the same Java installation each time you start the server. If several Java versions are installed, an explicit path to the desired executable may be necessary instead of the plain java command.
2. Create a dedicated server folder
Create a folder used only for this server, such as Minecraft Server. Avoid scattering the JAR and generated files across your desktop. Download the 1.17 server JAR into that folder and keep the filename unchanged until you know the exact name you will use in the launch command.
The folder will eventually contain the world directory, eula.txt, server.properties, logs, and other generated files. Once the world has been created, stop the server cleanly before copying the world folder for a backup. A backup made while files are still being written can be incomplete.
3. Run the server once to generate its files
Open a terminal in the server folder. Start the JAR with:

java -jar <server-jar-name>.jar noguiReplace <server-jar-name>.jar with the actual downloaded filename. The nogui option runs the server from the terminal; omit it if you specifically want the graphical server interface.
On the first run, the server creates files including eula.txt, server.properties, and the initial world data, then stops because the EULA has not yet been accepted. That stop is expected. If the command instead reports a Java error, return to the version check before changing any server settings.

4. Accept the EULA
Open the newly created eula.txt in a text editor. Read the Minecraft End User License Agreement and change:
eula=falseto:
eula=trueSave the file only if the server operator agrees to the EULA. Do not put quotation marks around the value. The server will refuse to start until this setting is true.

5. Configure server.properties
Open server.properties in a plain-text editor. The first launch creates the file with defaults. Change only the settings you understand, and save the file while the server is stopped.

Do not edit properties while the server is running and expect every change to apply immediately. Stop it, edit the file, then launch again. Keep a copy of the original properties file so you can recover from an accidental change.

Run the same command again from the server folder:
java -jar <server-jar-name>.jar noguiLeave the terminal open. Wait until the console reports that the server has finished loading and is ready for connections. Closing the terminal or ending the Java process stops the server. To shut it down safely, enter stop in the server console and wait for the save to complete before closing the window.
7. Connect from the host and home network
From the same computer
In Java Edition, open Multiplayer, add a server, and enter localhost as the address. This tests the server without involving the router or the public internet.

From another device on the same home network
Find the host computer’s private IPv4 address, typically shown by the operating system’s network settings or an IP-configuration command. Enter that address in the client’s server address field. Use the port only when it is not the default; for a non-default port, enter the address in the form private-ip:port.
A private address is reachable only inside the local network. It is not the address that remote friends should use.
8. Let trusted friends connect over the internet
Allow Java through the host firewall
When the operating system asks whether to allow the Java process through its firewall, allow the network profile that matches your home network. If you dismissed the prompt, create an inbound rule for the server’s TCP port, normally 25565, and for the Java process that runs the server. Firewall labels differ between operating systems, so verify that the rule targets the correct port and network profile.
Give the host computer a stable private address
Router forwarding must always point to the computer running the server. If the router changes that computer’s private IPv4 address, a rule that worked yesterday can silently point somewhere else. Use the router’s DHCP-reservation feature or another supported method to keep the host’s private address stable.

Create the port-forwarding rule
- Sign in to the router’s administration page.
- Find the section named Port Forwarding, Port Mapping, NAT, or a similar label.
- Create a rule for the server’s TCP port, normally external port
25565to internal port25565. - Set the destination to the host computer’s fixed private IPv4 address.
- Save or apply the rule, then confirm that the server is running before testing.
Tell trusted friends the home network’s public address and the server port. If you changed the port, include it as public-address:port. A public IP address exposes a service on your home network, so share it privately and only with people you trust. Do not publish it in a public post or server list unless you understand the security and abuse risks.

- Localhost fails: check that Java is installed correctly, the JAR is the intended version,
eula=trueis saved, and the console reached its ready state. - Localhost works but another home device cannot connect: check the host firewall, the private IPv4 address, Wi-Fi isolation or guest-network settings, and the port used in
server.properties. - Home-network connections work but friends outside the home cannot connect: verify the router’s forwarding target, the host’s stable private address, the firewall rule, and the public address. Some internet providers use carrier-grade NAT, which can prevent unsolicited inbound connections even when the router rule is correct.
- The client reports an incompatible version: compare the exact release shown on both sides. A 1.17 client and a 1.17.1 server are not interchangeable for this purpose.
- “Java not found” or a class-version error appears: run
java -versionin the same terminal used to launch the server and install or select Java 16 or newer. - The world appears to have vanished: stop the server cleanly, confirm that you are launching the JAR from the original server folder, and check that the world directory was not moved or renamed.
The official setup establishes the need for firewall and router configuration, but individual router menus and ISP restrictions vary. If your provider uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound service, ask whether a public IPv4 address is available or use a managed option instead of exposing an unreliable home connection.
Self-hosting versus managed alternatives
Self-hosting gives you direct access to the JAR, world files, properties, logs, and backups, but you are responsible for Java updates, firewall rules, port forwarding, security, power, and uptime. It is the best fit when you want file-level control and are comfortable administering a network.

Minecraft’s official multiplayer guidance notes that a Java Edition online server allows two or more players to play together without requiring a Realms subscription. Choose Realms or managed Java hosting when you do not want to administer Java and port forwarding, need a reachable endpoint while your home computer is off, or cannot obtain inbound connectivity from your ISP.
