The easiest way to make a Minecraft server on a phone is to host a Bedrock multiplayer world from the Minecraft app. It is free, but the host must usually keep Minecraft open and remain connected. If friends need to play while you are offline, create a Minecraft Bedrock Realm instead.
Android and iPhone versions of Minecraft use Bedrock Edition. They can play with compatible Bedrock players on Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Amazon Fire, and Chromebook, but Java players cannot directly join a normal mobile world or Bedrock Realm. The official Bedrock Dedicated Server is a separate program documented for Windows and Linux, not an official native Android or iOS server app.
Choose the right type of “server” first
Minecraft players use “server” to describe several different setups. Your best choice depends mainly on whether friends must be able to play when you are offline.
| Method | Cost | Can friends play while you are offline? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile-hosted world | No separate server fee | No | Short sessions with a few friends |
| Bedrock Realm | Subscription or eligible trial | Yes | Families and small private groups |
| Managed Bedrock host | Varies | Usually yes | More control without owning hardware |
| Self-hosted dedicated server | Computer, electricity, or VPS costs | Yes, while the machine runs | Advanced administrators |
| Java server with Bedrock bridge | Varies | Yes, while the server runs | Mixed Java-and-Bedrock communities |
Quick decision:
- Want to play together right now for free? Host a world from your phone.
- Want friends to play without you? Create a Bedrock Realm.
- Need plugins, server files, large communities, or advanced configuration? Use a separately hosted or self-hosted server.
What you need
- Minecraft Bedrock Edition installed on your Android phone, iPhone, or tablet.
- A free Microsoft account signed into Minecraft.
- The correct Xbox/Microsoft gamertags for your friends.
- The same current stable Minecraft version for every player.
- A reliable internet connection. Wi-Fi is preferable for hosting locally.
- Enough battery and storage for a long session.
Use the normal stable Minecraft release rather than Minecraft Preview or an Android beta. Preview and beta players may be unable to join players using the standard release; Android beta users may also lose access to Realms and non-beta players. Minecraft identifies mobile as a Bedrock platform in its Java-versus-Bedrock guide.

A Microsoft account is needed for purchases, Realms, and online cross-device features. Child accounts may also need a parent or account holder to allow multiplayer and communication in Xbox privacy settings.
Free method: host a Minecraft world from your phone
This is the simplest method if everyone is playing at the same time. It does not create a permanent, always-online server: the world is running on the host’s active Minecraft session.
1. Sign in to Microsoft
- Open Minecraft on your phone.
- Select Sign In, or open the profile/account option if that is what your version displays.
- Sign in with your Microsoft account.
- Confirm that the intended Xbox gamertag appears.
If invitations fail later, check that the account permits multiplayer and communication. The relevant settings may be under Microsoft/Xbox online safety or privacy controls, and labels can vary by account type and platform.
2. Create or select a world
- From the main menu, select Play.
- Select Create New, then Create New World, or choose an existing world.
- Set the game mode, difficulty, seed, cheats, and other options.
- Before starting, open the world’s multiplayer settings.
3. Enable multiplayer
Turn on Multiplayer Game, or the equivalent setting shown by your current Bedrock version. Review whether access is limited to friends, requires invitations, or allows a broader multiplayer list.

These permissions can prevent friends from appearing even when the world itself is configured correctly.
4. Add and invite friends
There are several possible routes depending on the current interface:
- Add a friend using their Xbox/Microsoft gamertag.
- Enter the world and open the pause menu.
- Select Invite to Game.
- Choose the friends you want to invite.
- Ask the friend to open Play and check the Friends tab, or accept the invitation.
Friends may need to accept the Xbox friendship request, restart Minecraft, or sign out and back in before the world appears.
5. Keep the host connected
Once friends join, keep Minecraft active and remain in the world. If you close the app, lose the network connection, or the phone suspends the game, other players should expect to be disconnected or unable to rejoin.

- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
- CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
Expected result: the host sees the other players enter the world, and invited friends can play while the host remains inside the active session. This method is free of a separate server subscription, but it is not a 24/7 server.
Can you host over cellular data?
Yes, a mobile-hosted world may work over cellular data, but Wi-Fi is the safer choice. Cellular hosting can cause higher latency, connection drops, battery drain, data usage, and problems when the phone changes networks. Some carriers may also restrict or manage certain traffic.
If you must use cellular data, charge the phone, disable battery-saving restrictions that suspend Minecraft, avoid switching networks during play, and monitor your data allowance.
Best official option: create a Bedrock Realm on mobile
A Realm is an official cloud-hosted Bedrock world that remains available when its owner is offline. For most mobile players who want a persistent private server without technical administration, this is the best option.
Invited friends do not need to purchase their own Realm subscription. Every player still needs compatible Bedrock Minecraft access, and console players may have additional platform-specific online-service requirements.
Current Bedrock Realm plans
On the official U.S. Realms page, the prices displayed on August 18, 2026 were:
- Bedrock Realms: $3.99 USD per month for the owner plus two other simultaneous players.
- Realms Plus: $7.99 USD per month for the owner plus up to ten other simultaneous players.
The larger plan means the owner plus ten additional players, not ten players total. Realms are advertised as available 24/7. A 30-day trial may be offered to eligible accounts and automatically renews unless canceled. Prices, taxes, billing method, promotions, and trial eligibility can vary by region, platform, and account, so check the current official Realms page before subscribing.
Create a new Realm
- Open Minecraft and select Play.
- Select Create New World.
- Configure the world.
- Select Create on Realms.
- Choose Add a 2 Player Realm or Add a 10 Player Realm, depending on the current label.
- Start the trial if your account is eligible, or complete the subscription.
- Finish creating the world and wait for Minecraft to upload it.
Upload an existing world to a Realm
You can use an existing mobile world instead of starting over:

- CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
- Select Play.
- Select the pencil or Edit button beside the world.
- Review the world and multiplayer settings.
- Select Play on Realm.
- Choose the Realm to which the world should be uploaded.
Back up first: loading or uploading a different world can replace the Realm’s active world. If the current Realm contains progress you care about, download or otherwise preserve that world before switching. Follow the current options in Minecraft’s official Realm setup guide.
Invite friends
Open the Realm’s member or invite controls and add friends by their gamertag. Where available, you can also use a Realm share link. Only invite people you trust, especially if they can build, modify, or otherwise interact with the world.
How friends join a Bedrock Realm
- Launch Minecraft Bedrock.
- Select Play.
- Open the Realms tab.
- Select the invited Realm.
- Select Play.
Unlike a normal hosted world, a Realm member can join even when the Realm owner is offline. Minecraft’s Realm joining instructions cover the current member flow.
Can you run a true dedicated server directly on Android or iPhone?
Do not assume that an Android phone or iPhone can run the official Minecraft Bedrock Dedicated Server simply by installing an app. Mojang/Microsoft’s official documentation describes downloading a ZIP package, extracting it into a server folder, launching it on Windows or Linux, configuring server.properties, and managing worlds in a worlds/ directory. It does not document Android or iOS as supported native server-hosting platforms.
The official Bedrock Dedicated Server is separate from the mobile Minecraft client. A phone can still be used to create a Realm, host a normal world, open a third-party provider’s control panel, or remotely administer a server that runs on another computer or VPS. Remote administration is not the same as running the server executable on the phone.
For the official installation model, see Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server documentation. A dedicated server is appropriate when you need server files, advanced configuration, scheduled backups, a larger community, or more administrative control.
Be careful with unofficial server apps
Avoid random APKs, modified Minecraft clients, and apps that claim to turn an iPhone into an official Bedrock server unless their compatibility, security, licensing, and support are independently verified.
- Never use pirated Minecraft APKs.
- Do not enter Microsoft credentials into an untrusted app.
- Do not expose a home server port without understanding firewall and security risks.
- Do not assume an app supports your current Bedrock version.
- Do not confuse a remote-control app with server hosting.
Java and Bedrock compatibility
Important: Android and iPhone players use Bedrock Edition. A Java Edition player cannot directly join your ordinary mobile-hosted world or Bedrock Realm.

Java Edition is available on Windows, Mac, and Linux, while mobile Minecraft is Bedrock. Bedrock supports cross-platform play with other compatible Bedrock devices, but Java and Bedrock are separate editions. A mixed Java-and-Bedrock group needs a separately configured server and compatibility software, making it an advanced project rather than a setting you can switch on in the mobile app.
Add-ons, Marketplace content, mods, and plugins
Bedrock content is not all interchangeable:
- Marketplace content: official Bedrock content designed for the Bedrock ecosystem and, where supported, Realms.
- Bedrock add-ons: user-created behavior or resource content that may require matching files and compatible versions.
- Java mods: not automatically compatible with Bedrock mobile.
- Java plugins: not interchangeable with Bedrock add-ons or Marketplace packs.
If friends cannot join after adding custom content, test the world without the add-on and confirm that everyone has compatible files and versions. For a first multiplayer session, start with a plain world so connection problems are easier to isolate.
Commands and administration
You do not need commands for either of the basic mobile routes. If cheats are enabled in a Bedrock world, optional in-game examples include:
/gamemode survival
/gamemode creative
/time set day
/weather clear
/gamerule doDaylightCycle false
Command availability and behavior can vary by Bedrock release. Enabling cheats can disable achievements for that world, so decide before activating them.

Dedicated-server commands are different: they are entered in the server console, not normally in mobile game chat. Examples listed in the official server documentation include:
op <playername>
deop <playername>
gamerule
gamerule doDayLightCycle false
stop
The exact spelling and context matter. The stop command shuts down the dedicated server cleanly; it does not apply to a regular mobile multiplayer session in the same way.
Troubleshooting: friends cannot join
The hosted world does not appear
- Confirm that both players are signed into Microsoft accounts.
- Confirm that both players are using Bedrock Edition.
- Update both installations to the same compatible stable version.
- Make sure the host enabled Multiplayer Game.
- Check Microsoft/Xbox privacy settings for multiplayer and communication permissions.
- Confirm the correct gamertag was added.
- Restart Minecraft on both devices.
- Make sure the host is still inside the world.
These checks align with Minecraft’s Bedrock multiplayer troubleshooting guidance. Platform-specific online subscriptions may also be required for some console players.
A Java player is trying to join
A Java player cannot directly join a normal Bedrock world or Realm. Use a separately configured mixed-edition server if cross-edition play is essential.

The host closed Minecraft
This is expected behavior for a normal hosted world. It is not a persistent server. Use a Realm or a separately hosted dedicated server for offline access.
A preview or beta player cannot connect
Move all players to the same compatible release channel and version. A player on Android beta or Bedrock Preview may not be able to join a normal stable player or access the same Realm.
A child account cannot use multiplayer
Ask the account holder or parent to review Xbox/Microsoft online-safety settings and allow multiplayer, communication, and any required Clubs permission. Changes may require restarting Minecraft or signing in again.
The Realm’s world was replaced
Do not repeatedly upload worlds while trying to fix the problem. First preserve the currently active Realm world, then use the Realm’s download or world-management controls to recover the desired version where possible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe phone disconnects or becomes too slow
Use Wi-Fi, connect the charger, close demanding background apps, prevent the operating system from suspending Minecraft, and avoid switching between Wi-Fi and cellular data. If the host still drops frequently, move the world to a Realm rather than maintaining a live session on the phone.
Which method should you choose?
- Two or three friends playing together now: host a mobile Bedrock world.
- Friends play at different times: create a Bedrock Realm.
- No separate server budget: host a world, accepting that the host must remain online.
- Different Bedrock devices: use a Realm or hosted Bedrock world, provided every player is on a compatible release.
- Plugins, server files, scheduled backups, or a large community: rent or self-host a dedicated server.
- Java and Bedrock players together: use an advanced separately configured server with compatibility software.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Minecraft on Android or iPhone Java Edition?
No. Mobile Minecraft is Bedrock Edition. It can play with compatible Bedrock devices, but Java players cannot directly join a normal mobile world or Bedrock Realm.
Can friends play when I close Minecraft?
Not in a normal world hosted from your phone. Use a Bedrock Realm or a separately hosted dedicated server for persistent access.
Is making a Minecraft server on mobile free?
Hosting a normal multiplayer world has no separate server subscription, although Minecraft, internet access, mobile data, and platform costs may still apply. Realms requires a subscription or eligible trial.

Minecraft’s official documentation describes the dedicated server for Windows and Linux, not as a native iOS or Android installation. A phone can manage a server hosted elsewhere.
The Bottom Line
For a free session, enable multiplayer on a Bedrock world and keep Minecraft open on your phone. For an always-online private world, create a Bedrock Realm from Play → Create New World → Create on Realms. A true dedicated server normally runs on separate Windows/Linux hardware or hosted infrastructure—not directly inside the standard mobile app.
