To livestream a podcast on YouTube with episode artwork, create or schedule a live event in YouTube Studio, then use an encoder to send your audio and a still-image visual to the event. Add the episode image as a visual in the stream if you want it onscreen, and set the event’s video thumbnail separately. A podcast’s square cover art and a video thumbnail are different placements with different aspect ratios.
What YouTube considers a podcast episode
On YouTube, a podcast is a playlist and each episode is a video; an MP3 alone is not a YouTube podcast episode. You can livestream a spoken-word show, but the live event still needs a video feed. YouTube does not automatically turn podcast artwork into a livestream. You must provide a visual, such as a still image in encoder software, graphics, or a camera feed.
For a produced show with external audio gear or a designed visual, an encoder gives you more control than the simpler webcam route. YouTube also supports webcam and mobile streaming, and says expensive equipment is not required to get started.
Prepare the episode artwork and video thumbnail
Keep the podcast playlist image separate from the live video thumbnail. YouTube recommends square 1280×1280-pixel podcast artwork. For a podcast playlist, its thumbnail guidance calls for a 1:1 image rather than the 16:9 ratio generally suggested for video thumbnails. JPG and PNG are among the supported formats; file-size limits depend on device and placement. Check YouTube’s current requirements when uploading.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Podcast artwork: Use the square image for the podcast playlist or show identity.
- Live event thumbnail: Prepare a separate video thumbnail, generally in 16:9, for the live event or its replay.
- On-screen image: If you want the episode artwork visible during the broadcast, add it as the visual in your encoder or production setup. Uploading it as a thumbnail alone does not put it into the live video.

Check channel eligibility and choose a streaming method
YouTube’s stated requirements include a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and a streamer who is at least 16. Check the channel’s eligibility before planning an event; platform requirements and availability can change. YouTube lists mobile, webcam, and encoder as streaming methods.

| Method | Best fit | Production trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Webcam | A straightforward computer-based camera and microphone feed | Simple to set up, but less suited to a designed still-image layout or external production workflow. |
| Encoder | A produced podcast stream with a still image, overlays, or connected audio/video equipment | Offers more control and input options, but requires configuring separate encoder software or hardware. |
For an audio-led podcast with episode artwork on screen, the encoder method is usually the more suitable choice. A microphone can help with spoken-word audio, but it is optional equipment, not a YouTube requirement.
Set up the live event with an encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and select Go Live. In Live Control Room, create a new live stream or schedule one for later. Add the event details and select the audience and visibility settings that fit your show.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. Enter the URL in the encoder’s server field and the key in its stream-key field. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private; anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your event.
- Configure the encoder’s inputs. Choose your microphone or audio interface and create a video scene that displays the episode artwork or another visual. Set the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to values supported by your equipment and connection. Do not assume a square podcast image will automatically fit a 16:9 video canvas: position and scale it deliberately, adding a background or other layout if appropriate.
- Start the encoder and check Live Control Room. Wait for YouTube to receive the feed and show a preview. Confirm that the picture is framed as intended and the audio is audible before starting the event.
- Start the live event in Live Control Room. When the preview and stream status are ready, start the event in YouTube. Starting the encoder sends the feed; it is distinct from starting the event itself.
Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guide for the current interface and stream-key handling.

Test audio, picture, and internet before the show
- Run a test stream before the event using audio and movement similar to the actual show. Check the YouTube preview and listen for clipping, low volume, hum, or delay.
- Check that the episode image is readable at the size shown in the stream and that no important text is cropped.
- Measure outbound upload bandwidth, not just download speed. Leave headroom above the stream’s bitrate so normal connection fluctuations do not exhaust capacity.
- Choose encoder settings based on resolution, frame rate, codec, and what your connection can sustain. YouTube’s recommended bitrate varies with those settings, so consult its current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table rather than relying on a single bitrate for every stream.
- During the broadcast, monitor Live Control Room’s stream health and act on any warnings.
YouTube’s streaming tips explain why upload bandwidth matters and recommend checking the connection.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded episode looping as a YouTube live stream rather than host a live spoken-word broadcast, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The stream runs without a computer, OBS, or home internet connection staying on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.

YouTube does not receive the encoder feed
Check that the encoder’s server URL and stream key match the event in Live Control Room, then confirm the encoder is actually sending. If you regenerated the key, replace the old key in the encoder. Do not share the key publicly.

The event preview is black or the artwork is missing
Verify that the correct video scene is active and that the encoder is sending video, not audio alone. Check the image source, visibility, and canvas placement in the encoder before starting the event.
The audio is silent, distorted, or out of balance
Confirm the intended microphone or interface is selected, connected, and not muted. Test at the levels and with the speaking setup you will use live; adjust gain to avoid clipping.
The stream buffers or stream health shows warnings
Compare the encoder bitrate with available upload bandwidth and reduce the stream settings if the connection cannot sustain them. Recheck upload capacity and leave headroom; a download speed result does not establish upload performance.
The live thumbnail looks wrong
Check whether you edited the event’s video thumbnail or only the podcast playlist artwork. They are separate placements: the podcast image is square, while a video thumbnail is generally 16:9.
Copyright and podcast content
Before going live, make sure you have the rights needed for every element in the broadcast, including music, clips, images, and guest material. A live stream and its replay are still subject to YouTube’s copyright rules. Use artwork you own or are licensed to use, and review YouTube’s current policies and your channel’s status before the event.
