Upload an image as a Roblox image or decal, and Roblox assigns the asset ID. To retrieve an existing ID, open Creator Dashboard, go to Creations → Development Items, open the asset’s three-dot menu, and select Copy Asset ID.
What a Roblox image ID is
An image ID identifies an image asset stored on Roblox. The number is created by Roblox when the upload is accepted; it is not an arbitrary number you can make yourself. rbxassetid://[ID] is the URI form commonly used to reference that asset in Studio, while some fields ask for only the digits.
Roblox uses the term decal for a regular image that players can place on bricks and other objects. In Studio, a Decal object applies an image texture to one face of its parent part.
Upload an image and get its ID in Creator Dashboard
- Prepare the file. Roblox’s asset guidance lists PNG, JPEG, BMP, and TGA for image or decal uploads. In the documented Assets API context, image dimensions must be smaller than 8000 × 8000 pixels.
- Open Creator Dashboard. Use Roblox’s asset-creation workflow to upload the image as an image or decal. Roblox assigns a unique asset ID to the imported asset.
- Open your development items. Go to Creations → Development Items, then select the asset category containing the upload.
- Copy the assigned number. Find the image thumbnail, open its ⋯ menu, and choose Copy Asset ID.
The copied value is the ID for that uploaded cloud asset. Save the digits if you need to enter them in a field that does not accept a URI.

Upload through Studio’s Asset Manager
Studio also provides asset-management tools for importing images into the game you currently have open. This is useful when you are building an experience and want the asset available in that project while you work. Roblox still assigns the ID; Studio does not let you select the number.
After importing, use the asset’s details or management controls to obtain its assigned ID. If you need to manage or locate the item independently of the open place, Creator Dashboard’s Development Items view is the more direct route.

Dashboard and Studio: which upload route should you use?

How to use the ID in Roblox Studio
- Insert or select the object that will display the image.
- Enter the reference in the property or field used by that object. The common Studio format for a user-uploaded asset is
rbxassetid://123456789, replacing the example digits with your ID. - For a Decal, set its image content (the
ColorMapContentproperty) and choose the face of the parentBaseParton which it should appear. - Use a Texture or another image-capable object when you need that object’s specific tiling, surface, or placement behavior.
A game-specific image box may request only the numeric ID or a different asset format. Follow the label or example shown in that field rather than pasting the URI automatically.
Why the image may not appear
The asset is still being moderated
Roblox says users cannot see or interact with an asset while it remains in the moderation queue. Wait for the review to finish, then test the reference again.

The Copy Asset ID command is missing
- Confirm that you are in Creations → Development Items, not a different Creator Dashboard section.
- Select the correct asset category.
- Hover over the correct thumbnail and open its ⋯ menu.
The value was pasted into the wrong format
Try the digits alone if the destination asks for an ID, or use rbxassetid://[ID] when a Studio content property expects an asset URI. External experiences can define their own input format.
The image is on the wrong surface
Check the Decal’s selected face and confirm that the Decal is parented to the intended part. Its content property controls the image, while its face setting controls where the image is displayed.

Upload and usage requirements
Images and other assets uploaded to Roblox must comply with Roblox Community Standards and Terms of Use. Approval is required before other users can see or interact with an asset, so a correctly copied ID does not bypass moderation.
