Sea turtles are wild critters found on Dazzle Beach. They are not automatically granted when you start the game, buy a game edition, or encounter a cosmetic turtle in a menu. You must befriend a wild turtle through repeated feeding.

Search Dazzle Beach
Wild sea turtles spawn on Dazzle Beach. Search the open sand and shoreline areas rather than looking in a character’s house, a shop, or the companion wardrobe. If the turtle color you want is not present, the problem is usually the schedule rather than your feeding technique.

Each color has its own schedule
Sea turtle colors do not all appear at the same time. Each color follows its own day-and-time schedule, so a successful search depends on matching the beach visit to the variant’s window. The available documentation does not establish a universal clock time for every color; use the listed in-game schedule for the specific turtle you are targeting instead of assuming that all sea turtles share one window.
Sunday has the widest variety of sea turtle appearances. If you are flexible about color, Sunday is the most useful day to check Dazzle Beach. The Black Sea Turtle is listed for Mondays and is described as the rarest variant. A Monday visit is therefore the appropriate starting point when the black color is your goal.
Plan around the target, not the beach alone
Before leaving for Dazzle Beach, decide whether you want any sea turtle or a particular color. For any turtle, check Sunday first because it offers the broadest variety. For the Black Sea Turtle, plan for Monday. For another color, use that color’s listed day and time. If you arrive outside the window, waiting on the same beach may not cause the desired variant to appear; return during the correct schedule instead.
How to approach a sea turtle without losing the encounter
Sea turtles use a stop-and-wait behavior. They are not meant to be chased. Move toward one at a measured pace until it reacts by hiding inside its shell. That reaction is normal and is the point at which you should stop.
- Stand far enough away that the turtle is visible and has room to react.
- Walk toward it rather than sprinting directly into it.
- When the turtle retracts into its shell, release the movement control.
- Wait several seconds without pushing closer or circling around it.
- Let the turtle come back out.
- Approach again in a short movement, then stop if it hides once more.
- Continue this rhythm until the feeding interaction becomes available.
The turtle hiding is not a failure state. It is the critter’s approach animation. The common mistake is continuing to move while it is hidden, which keeps the player too close and prevents the reappearance that allows the interaction. Patience is faster than trying to force the encounter.
What “slowly” means in practice
Use short movement bursts and watch the turtle after each burst. You do not need a special tool, quest, or companion equipped to perform the approach. The procedure is the same whether you are visiting for the first feeding or returning to complete the collection requirement.

What to feed a sea turtle
Seaweed is the favorite food
Bring Seaweed with you and use it when the feeding prompt appears. Seaweed is the documented favorite food for sea turtles, making it the most dependable choice when your objective is to befriend the critter.
Seafood is liked, but not the preferred choice
Seafood is also listed as food sea turtles like. “Liked” and “favorite” are different categories in the critter system, so use Seaweed when you want the clearest, most reliable feeding choice. If you only have seafood available, it is recognized as liked food, but Seaweed remains the recommended option for this task.
Bring enough for multiple visits
Because collection requires repeated successful feedings, keep Seaweed available for later beach visits rather than treating the first feeding as a one-time exchange. The documented minimum for the Classic Sea Turtle is three successful feedings, and the total can vary, so having food ready for additional days prevents an avoidable return trip.
How many times must you feed it?
The Classic Sea Turtle page documents a minimum of three successful feedings. That minimum is not a promise that every turtle will unlock after exactly three interactions: the same documentation says the exact number can vary.
More importantly, only the first successful feeding per day counts toward collection progress on that Classic Sea Turtle page. Feeding the same turtle repeatedly on one day may still be useful for the immediate relationship interaction, but it should not be treated as several collection steps. Plan for separate successful days.

- First eligible day: Find the target color, complete the hide-and-wait approach, and feed Seaweed successfully.
- Next eligible appearance: Return when that color’s schedule brings it back, perform the same approach, and complete another successful feeding.
- Third eligible appearance: Feed it again and check the Critter Collection.
- If it has not unlocked: Continue on later eligible days. The documented minimum is three, not a guaranteed maximum.
If a day’s feeding does not register, do not count it as a completed collection day. Confirm that the food was accepted and that the interaction finished before leaving the beach.

How to tell whether the turtle was collected
The collection milestone is the turtle being added to your Critter Collection. A successful approach animation by itself does not confirm that the companion is unlocked. After a qualifying feeding, check the collection interface when you have a moment. If the turtle is not listed, return on another eligible appearance and feed it again.
Collection progress is tied to the wild critter encounter, not to owning a similarly named cosmetic turtle. A Tart Turtle, Rock Star Turtle, Embarrassment Turtle, or Celestial Sea Turtle does not substitute for feeding a wild sea turtle on Dazzle Beach.
How to equip the sea turtle as your companion
Once the turtle appears in your Critter Collection, equip it from the wardrobe menu:
- Open Inventory.
- Choose Wardrobe.
- Select Companions.
- Pick the collected sea turtle.
The turtle will then follow your player character. Equipped companions follow you between biomes, so you do not need to return to Dazzle Beach whenever you travel elsewhere. Changing biomes also does not undo the collection; it only changes where your equipped companion is accompanying you.
If the turtle is not in Companions
Check the Critter Collection first. If the turtle is absent there, the feeding requirement has not completed, even if you remember interacting with it. Return during the correct color schedule and complete another successful feeding. If it is present in the collection but not visible in the wardrobe, close and reopen the menu, then confirm that you are in Wardrobe → Companions rather than a clothing category.
Why the turtle keeps hiding
You are still moving while it is shelled
The hide animation tells you to stop. Release the movement input and wait several seconds. Approaching again before it reappears can restart the same behavior.

You are approaching too quickly
Sprinting or making a long uninterrupted approach can keep the turtle in its defensive state. Use short steps and pause whenever it reacts.

The turtle must reappear before it can be approached again. There is no benefit to circling it, blocking its path, or repeatedly pressing the interaction button while it is hidden. Wait for the animation to finish, then resume the slow approach.
You found it outside the target window
If the color is not the one expected for the current day and time, move to the schedule that belongs to your desired variant. Sunday has the widest variety; Monday is the listed day for the rare Black Sea Turtle. Other colors require their own listed windows.

The food was not accepted
Use Seaweed first. Seafood is listed as liked food, but Seaweed is the favorite and should be your default when you are trying to establish progress.
You fed it earlier the same day
For the Classic Sea Turtle, only the first successful feeding per day counts toward collection. If you already completed one feeding today, wait for the next eligible appearance rather than assuming another feeding will advance the counter.

The turtle disappeared before you fed it
Leave the immediate area and search the rest of Dazzle Beach during the active window. If the target color is no longer available, return on its next scheduled day and time. The wild encounter is repeatable; missing one appearance does not permanently lock the turtle.
You expected a purchase to unlock it
Wild sea turtles are earned through Dazzle Beach feedings. A game edition or a separate cosmetic turtle purchase does not complete this wild-critter requirement.
Wild sea turtles versus named cosmetic turtles
Disney Dreamlight Valley includes both repeatable wild critter encounters and named turtle cosmetics. They use different acquisition routes, so choosing the correct route prevents wasted time or an unnecessary purchase.

The named turtle routes can change as shop and event content rotates. Do not assume that a listed Premium Shop or event item is currently obtainable. If your goal is simply to have a sea turtle follow you, the Dazzle Beach route is the repeatable method documented for wild critters.

Gameloft announced a physical Disney Dreamlight Valley Cozy Edition for PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. It includes the base game and digital bonuses, making it a legitimate way to obtain and play the game on one of those platforms.
Buying that edition does not automatically unlock a wild sea turtle companion. The wild critter still has to be found on Dazzle Beach, fed successfully on the required schedule, added to the Critter Collection, and equipped through the wardrobe. Edition bonuses and the wild-critter collection system are separate.
A reliable checklist for your next beach visit
- Confirm which sea turtle color you want.
- Check that color’s active day and time.
- Use Sunday when you are happy with any available color; use Monday for the listed Black Sea Turtle window.
- Carry Seaweed, the favorite food.
- Search Dazzle Beach carefully.
- Walk toward the turtle in short movements.
- Stop immediately when it hides.
- Wait several seconds for it to reappear.
- Repeat the slow approach until feeding is available.
- Complete the first successful feeding of the day.
- Return on later eligible days until the turtle enters your Critter Collection.
- Equip it with Inventory → Wardrobe → Companions.
