What each Space Engineers privacy mode does
Space Engineers exposes four access modes in its session settings. The choice controls whether multiplayer is disabled, broadly discoverable, limited to friends, or invitation-only.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Mode | Multiplayer behavior | Who can discover or join | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| OFFLINE | Multiplayer is disabled. | No other players can join. | Solo play or testing without any multiplayer access. |
| PUBLIC | Multiplayer is enabled and the session is broadcast in the server list. | Anyone who finds the session may attempt to join. | Open community play. |
| FRIENDS | Multiplayer is enabled for the host’s friends. | The host’s Steam friends have broader access than an invitation-only lobby. | A casual game where every Steam friend is an acceptable participant. |
| PRIVATE | Multiplayer is enabled and only invited players can join. | Players must receive an invitation from the host. | A controlled session for a specific group. |
Private and Friends are not interchangeable. Friends mode is broader because it covers the host’s friends, while Private mode requires an invitation for each intended participant. OFFLINE is also different from Private: it turns multiplayer off rather than hiding an enabled session.
How to make a player-hosted world private
This procedure applies when one player loads the world and acts as the host through the normal game client. The world must be running from the account that sends the invitations.

- Load or create the world. Start the existing save, or create a new world and continue to its multiplayer options.
- Open multiplayer settings. From the main menu, use the world’s settings before launch. During play, open the in-game settings and locate the multiplayer section. The exact label can appear as Online Mode or Lobby Type, depending on the screen and game version.
- Select Private. Set the value to Private, not Friends and not Public. Apply or save the world settings before returning to the game.
- Launch the world. Start the session with the private value active. If you changed an existing world while it was already running, leave and reload it if the game does not apply the setting immediately.
- Invite each player through Steam. Open Steam’s invitation control for the running session and select the intended players. Send an invitation to every person who should have access; a person who was not invited may not be able to join even if they know the world name.
- Have players accept the invitation. They should use the Steam invitation or the join prompt associated with it, rather than searching the public server list. Their Steam account must be the account that received the invitation.
- Keep the setting private when you return. Before launching the world on a later day, check that it still says Private. Switching it to Friends or Public changes the audience immediately and can make the session discoverable to more people than intended.
If an invitation does not appear
Confirm that the host is actually in the world, that Steam is online for both accounts, and that the invitation was sent to the correct Steam account. Have the recipient check Steam notifications and the game’s join prompts. If the world was closed and relaunched, send a fresh invitation from the new session instead of relying on an old notification.
Inviting a changing group
Private mode is well suited to a group that changes from session to session, but the host must invite new participants. If every Steam friend should be able to join without a separate invitation, Friends mode is the less restrictive choice; use it only when that wider access is acceptable.
How to make a dedicated Space Engineers server private
A dedicated server runs independently of a player’s in-game lobby. Configure the server in the Space Engineers Dedicated Server Manager, or edit the active SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg file used by that installation. The important detail is to change the profile and file that the running instance actually loads.

Set the access mode
- Stop the dedicated server before editing its configuration, or use the manager’s built-in configuration screen if it supports safe live changes.
- Open the server’s multiplayer or access settings.
- Set
OnlineModetoPRIVATE. In a manager, this may be presented as a drop-down labelled Online Mode or Lobby Type; choose the Private equivalent. - Check that the value is not still
PUBLIC. A server name, password, or group field does not by itself correct a Public access mode.
Add a server password
Enter a strong password in the server’s Password field. Give it only to the people who should connect, and do not reuse a password that protects another account or service. A password controls entry, but it does not necessarily remove the server from every discovery path; use the Steam Group ID restriction as well when you want group-based visibility.
Restrict the server to a Steam group
- Create or select the Steam group whose members should be allowed to use the server.
- Copy the group’s numeric Steam Group ID, not its display name or invitation URL.
- Enter that number in the dedicated server’s Steam Group ID field.
- Make sure every intended player has joined the group. Entering an ID does not add people to the group automatically.
- Save the profile or configuration file.
Keen’s dedicated-server documentation states that a non-zero Steam Group ID makes the server visible only to that Steam group. Group membership remains a separate requirement: a player who has the password but is not in the selected group may still be unable to see or access the server.
Save and restart the correct instance
Use the manager’s Save or Apply control, or save the active SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg file directly. Restart or reload the dedicated server when the manager requires it; many configuration changes are read only during startup. If you operate more than one server profile, verify that you edited the profile associated with the process you started. A common cause of an apparently ignored password is changing one profile while another profile is running.

Password protection and Steam Group ID: which should you use?
| Control | What it does | What it does not do | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Password | Requires a player to provide a secret before entry. | It does not by itself prove that the player belongs to your intended community or guarantee that the server is hidden from discovery. | Small groups that can safely share one secret, or as an additional check. |
| Steam Group ID | Limits server visibility and access to members of the specified Steam group when a non-zero ID is configured. | It does not enroll players automatically, and it is not a substitute for checking group membership. | Persistent communities that want membership-based access and reduced discoverability. |
| Both together | Combines group membership with a password, creating two independent checks. | The exact interaction can depend on the server-manager version; official documentation does not promise that one mechanism replaces the other in every version. | A long-running private server where you want the strongest practical separation from casual visitors. |
For a temporary private lobby, the Private session setting and Steam invitations are usually sufficient. For a dedicated server that stays online, use OnlineMode=PRIVATE, a password, and a Steam Group ID when your group can maintain membership reliably.
Network settings still matter
Privacy settings decide who is authorized, not whether packets can reach the server. Remote players still need a working route to the dedicated server computer.
- Allow incoming UDP traffic. Create a firewall rule on the server computer for the UDP port on which Space Engineers is listening. Apply the rule to the network profile used by that machine.
- Forward the same UDP port from the router. Send the configured port to the server computer’s local IP address. The Wiki setup guide uses UDP port 27016 as its default example; use the actual port shown in your active server configuration if it differs.
- Keep the destination address stable. A router rule pointing at an old local IP will fail after the server computer receives a different address.
- Use one server per port. Two Space Engineers instances cannot reliably listen on the same UDP port. Check for an old process before starting a second profile.
- Test from outside the local network. A local connection can work even when router forwarding is wrong. Have a remote player test after the firewall and forwarding rules are saved.
Do not weaken the privacy mode to solve a connectivity problem. If invited players cannot connect, first verify the listening port, firewall rule, router destination, and running process.

Why friends cannot join a private server
The server is still public or the wrong profile is running
Open the active manager profile or configuration file and confirm that the access value is Private or OnlineMode=PRIVATE. If the server name appears in the public list, stop the process and check whether a different profile or second server instance is broadcasting it.
The password was not saved or is being read from another file
Save the password in the configuration that the running instance loads, then restart if required. Check capitalization, spaces, and accidental changes to the password field. Do not assume that editing a backup copy or an unused profile changed the live server.
The Steam Group ID is wrong
The field must contain the current numeric ID. A group name, vanity name, or URL is not the same value. Remove stray spaces or characters, save the active profile, and restart if necessary.

The player is not a member of the selected group
Ask the player to join the Steam group with the account they use for Space Engineers. Membership must be established separately for every intended participant; sending the server password does not grant group membership.

The player is joining the wrong instance
Compare the server name, world name, and host details with the intended instance. Similar names are common when a machine runs test and production profiles. Have the player use the invitation or the exact server entry associated with the private world.
The server cannot be reached at all
Work through connectivity before changing access controls: confirm the server is running, identify its configured UDP port, allow that port through the computer firewall, forward it to the correct local address, and ensure no other process owns it. If the server is behind multiple routers or carrier-grade network translation, ordinary forwarding may not provide an inbound route; in that case, use a network arrangement that supplies one or host the dedicated process on a reachable network.
A setting appears to revert after a restart
Some managers regenerate configuration from a selected profile. Change the value in the manager, save it, and inspect the file or status screen after restarting. If it reverts, look for a second installation, a service account using another data directory, or a launch shortcut that starts a different profile.
How to verify that the server is private
- Read the access mode from the running profile, not from an old screenshot or backup.
- Confirm the dedicated value is
PRIVATEor that the player-hosted lobby shows Private. - Check that the password is present if you chose password protection.
- Check that the Steam Group ID is numeric and matches the intended group when group restriction is enabled.
- Confirm every authorized player is a member of that group and has received an invitation when the session is player-hosted.
- Ask an account that is neither invited nor a member of the group to search for the server. It should not be able to join; do not share the password during this test.
- After changing any setting, restart or reload the server when required and repeat the check against the newly running instance.
Changing a private server back to Friends or Public
Open the same Online Mode, Lobby Type, or OnlineMode setting and select the broader mode you intend to use. Friends mode allows the host’s friends, while Public mode enables server-list broadcasting and open attempts to join. Remove or revise the password and Steam Group ID only if you deliberately want those additional controls gone. Save the active profile and restart when required, then tell players which join method applies to the new mode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPractical privacy habits for a long-running server
- Keep the password out of public chat, screenshots, stream overlays, and server names.
- Review Steam Group membership when someone leaves the community; removing a former player from the group is more reliable than assuming they forgot the password.
- Change the password after it is shared outside the intended group.
- Record the listening UDP port and the server’s local IP so firewall and forwarding rules can be audited after network changes.
- When troubleshooting, change one variable at a time and restore the private mode after testing. A temporary Public setting can expose the server to more players than intended.
These controls work at different layers: the lobby mode governs the session’s audience, the password checks a secret, the Steam Group ID checks membership and visibility, and the firewall and router determine whether a remote connection can arrive. Keeping those layers configured together gives you a private Space Engineers server without confusing privacy failures with ordinary network failures.
