How to Make a Static-Image Radio Stream on YouTube

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To make a static-image radio stream on YouTube, create an OBS scene with an image source and a looping audio file, connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room with your stream URL and stream key, then check the preview before going live. Keep rights to both the music and artwork cleared: YouTube may interrupt a live stream when it detects third-party content.

What you need

  • A verified YouTube channel with no live-stream restrictions in the past 90 days; streamers must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • OBS Studio, a still image, and an audio file you have permission to use. OBS supports image sources and media sources; its media source documentation lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV files.
  • A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your selected stream bitrate.

This setup sends an encoded video to YouTube: the image is the visual frame, while the audio source supplies the radio program. A camera is not required.

Build the static-image scene in OBS

  1. Create a scene: In OBS, use the Scenes panel to add a scene for the stream.
  2. Add the image: In Sources, select + > Image, choose the artwork file, and confirm. Resize or use the fit-to-screen option so the image fills the canvas without unwanted borders. If you want a changing visual rather than a static one, OBS also documents image slideshows.
  3. Add the audio: Select + > Media Source, choose the audio file, and enable Loop if it should repeat when it ends. Confirm that the source is not muted and its level is visible on the OBS audio meter.
  4. Check the mix: Play the source and listen through OBS monitoring or a local test recording. Check that the image remains visible and that the audio is neither silent nor distorted.

OBS may play a media source from its beginning when the source is restarted. If your radio format uses multiple files, prepare a playlist or combine the audio into a continuous file and verify the transitions before streaming.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and choose to start a stream now or schedule one.
  2. In the stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen, include it in a recording, or share it publicly.
  3. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose YouTube if an appropriate service preset is available; otherwise select a custom service and paste the server URL and stream key into their respective fields. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted RTMP option. To use it, reveal the RTMPS URL in YouTube’s stream settings and enter that URL in OBS.
  4. Apply the settings, return to the scene, and select Start Streaming. Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room.
  5. For a scheduled stream, check the preview and then select Go live in Live Control Room. For a stream starting immediately, follow the on-screen controls after the preview appears.

When finished, stop streaming in OBS and end the event in Live Control Room if YouTube has not ended it automatically. YouTube automatically archives streams that are under 12 hours.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose settings that match YouTube’s guidance

Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table for the resolution, frame rate, and ingestion codec you select. Its recommended video bitrate changes with those choices, so there is no single correct bitrate for every static-image radio stream. Leave upload headroom rather than setting the encoder at the full sustained capacity of your connection.

  • Protocol: RTMPS is recommended by YouTube.
  • Rate control: Use CBR.
  • Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 as supported options. Select a codec supported by your encoder and use the matching YouTube bitrate guidance.
  • Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps. A still-image stream does not need a high frame rate for motion, but follow the frame-rate row corresponding to your chosen output.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Audio: YouTube lists AAC and MP3. Its stereo recommendations are 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps audio bitrate.

These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee of uninterrupted delivery. Test the encoder and monitor stream health and audio/video quality during the broadcast.

Rights, copyright checks, and YouTube rules

Clear permission for both the music and the artwork before broadcasting. Owning a recording or finding an image online does not by itself establish that you have the rights needed for a live stream. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches, including material from another broadcast. If it detects such content, it may replace the stream image with a placeholder and can interrupt or terminate the stream if the content continues.

Even if you have licensed music, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist for the live stream to avoid a claim. Resolve that with the rights owner before going live; do not rely on a license document alone to prevent automated interruption. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Preflight checklist and troubleshooting

Before you start

  • Confirm the artwork fills the intended frame and is the version you have rights to use.
  • Play the audio through a full loop or representative segment; confirm loop behavior, levels, and transitions.
  • Check that OBS is sending to the correct YouTube stream and that the stream key has not been exposed.
  • Wait for the Live Control Room preview, inspect both picture and sound, and verify stream health before making the event public.
  • If this is your first time using the workflow, run a short test stream. YouTube recommends preparing the encoder ahead of the event and checking the preview.

Common problems

  • No preview arrives: Check the server URL, stream key, and OBS connection status. Confirm that the selected YouTube preset or custom RTMPS URL matches the current stream settings.
  • Audio is missing: Make sure the Media Source is enabled and unmuted, the correct file is selected, and the OBS audio meter responds during playback.
  • Audio stops at the end: Enable Loop on the Media Source and verify the source is not being stopped or replaced by another scene or playlist action.
  • Image is cropped or has borders: Resize the Image source or fit it to the canvas, then inspect the YouTube preview rather than relying only on the OBS preview.
  • Stream health is poor or the broadcast drops: Check YouTube’s stream-health indication, lower the video bitrate to the applicable YouTube recommendation if your upload cannot sustain it, and leave more headroom. Retest before resuming.
  • YouTube replaces the image or interrupts the stream: Review the copyright notice, stop using the matched material, and contact the relevant rights owner about permissions and any Content ID allowlisting.
