How to Make a YouTube Live Playlist Skip Videos Already Played Today

OBS can loop and shuffle a VLC playlist, but skipping videos already played today requires a separate scheduler that records playback dates and filters the list.

Neither YouTube’s playlist-repeat control nor OBS’s built-in shuffle can exclude videos already played on the current date. YouTube’s repeat setting affects playback in the viewer’s YouTube player, while OBS’s VLC Video source offers playlist looping and shuffling—not a documented daily playback history. To enforce a “skip anything played today” rule in an OBS broadcast, use a separate scheduler or custom controller that records playback dates and supplies OBS with a filtered playlist.

Choose the playback control that matches the job

Option What it controls Playlist and order Daily playback history
YouTube playlist repeat Playback for someone watching in YouTube Repeats the viewer’s playlist Not a broadcast sequencing control; no daily exclusion is documented. YouTube Help
OBS Media Source An individual media file in OBS One file, rather than a VLC playlist No daily playback ledger is documented. OBS Media Sources
OBS VLC Video source Playlist playback sent from OBS to the live broadcast Supports Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist No daily playback ledger is documented. OBS Media Sources
Separate scheduler or custom controller Stateful selection of what OBS should play Can provide a filtered candidate list if implemented for your setup Can exclude items recorded for today; this is an implementation approach inferred from the documented controls, not a verified ready-made integration.

Use a Media Source when the broadcast should play one file. Use VLC Video when OBS needs to play a list of local files. If the rule is specifically “do not play an item again today,” neither built-in OBS shuffle nor YouTube playlist repeat is enough on its own.

Set up an OBS playlist rotation

  1. Confirm where the video plays. This workflow applies when OBS is sending local video files to the YouTube Live broadcast. A YouTube playlist on the viewer side does not choose the sequence OBS sends.
  2. Install VLC if you need the VLC Video source. OBS says VLC must be installed for that source to appear. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS documents VLC Video source availability for Windows, macOS, and Linux in its Media Sources documentation.
  3. Add the playlist in OBS. Add a VLC Video source and select the files you want in its playlist. If the source you add is Media Source, it handles an individual file rather than a VLC playlist.
  4. Choose the built-in rotation controls. Enable Loop Playlist if the source should restart after the list ends. Enable Shuffle Playlist if you want a randomized order. These controls are independent: looping governs what happens at the end of the list; shuffle affects ordering.
  5. Check the result in the outgoing broadcast. Confirm the source is visible and audible in OBS and that the intended files play. A shuffled list may still select an item that played earlier that day; shuffle is not a daily exclusion rule.

Add the “played today” rule with a scheduler

OBS’s documented VLC Video controls do not include a date-stamped playback ledger. Meeting the exact requirement therefore means adding stateful scheduling outside those controls. The design below is a practical inference from OBS’s documented playlist features; no ready-made OBS integration is established here as providing this exact behavior.

  1. Define what counts as played. Decide whether an item enters the day’s history as soon as it starts, only after it finishes, or after it has played for a minimum duration. A start-based rule prevents immediate repeats even if a file is interrupted; a completion-based rule lets an interrupted item return later.
  2. Keep a stable identity for every item. Have the scheduler identify files consistently—such as by a maintained file identifier or path—so a renamed or moved file does not accidentally appear new. Decide how to handle replacements and duplicate copies.
  3. Record playback against the correct date. When the chosen start, completion, or duration threshold occurs, write the item’s identity and date to persistent storage. Set the timezone that defines “today,” especially if the stream runs continuously across midnight.
  4. Build the eligible list. At each selection point, exclude every item whose history matches the current date. Then choose the next eligible item and feed or update the playlist used by the playback source.
  5. Handle an empty list deliberately. If every item has already qualified as played today, the scheduler must wait for the next date, use a clearly designated fallback, or report that there is nothing eligible. Do not silently replay an excluded item if the rule is strict.
  6. Test interruptions and date changes. Check what happens when OBS or the scheduler restarts, a file fails to play, the system clock or timezone changes, and a video crosses midnight. Persistent history and a clearly defined playback event are necessary for consistent behavior.

This design requires a controller capable of observing playback and updating the list. The OBS and YouTube documentation cited here does not establish a specific plugin or turnkey workflow that supplies those pieces automatically. An OBS forum listing titled Media Playlist Source describes a separate plugin, but that listing is not evidence that it tracks items played on a given date.

Troubleshoot the rotation

  • Playlist repeat works for viewers but not the broadcast order: that is expected. YouTube’s repeat control applies to playback in the YouTube player; sequence the outgoing broadcast in OBS or another encoder.
  • VLC Video is missing from OBS: install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC, as specified in the OBS documentation.
  • Videos repeat despite Shuffle Playlist: shuffle randomizes order; it does not consult a date-based record. Add a scheduler that filters out today’s history.
  • A previously played file returns after a restart: the playback record may exist only in temporary memory, or the controller may not have saved the playback event. Store history persistently and verify that the scheduler reloads it.
  • A file is excluded even though it barely played: the system may record playback at start. If that is not the intended rule, change the definition to completion or a minimum-duration threshold and test interrupted playback.
  • No video is eligible: all files may be in today’s history. Choose the intended empty-list behavior rather than allowing an accidental repeat.
  • The list resets at an unexpected time: verify the scheduler’s timezone and midnight boundary. A stream may continue through the date change while its eligibility set changes.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream from the cloud; it does not provide the date-based playback history described above. For that specific daily exclusion rule, you still need a scheduler or custom controller. StreamNeo’s setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or pricing, then start the free day.
