How to Make an FFmpeg 4K 60fps YouTube Live Stream Recover After a Disconnect

Use FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer to retry temporary output failures, while handling process crashes and YouTube event resumption as separate problems.

To recover from a temporary output failure while FFmpeg is still running, send the stream through FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer with recovery enabled. The documented pattern retries the output connection every second, but it does not restart FFmpeg if the process exits or guarantee that YouTube will accept a restarted publisher into the same live event. Treat those as separate failure cases and test them independently.

What FIFO recovery does—and what it does not

FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can keep processing a real-time stream during a temporary output failure, such as a network outage, then attempt to recover the output. Its documentation example uses an FLV FIFO output, -attempt_recovery 1, and -recovery_wait_time 1; it describes attempts every second indefinitely. FFmpeg’s muxer documentation presents this as an example pattern, not a tested command for every FFmpeg build or workflow.

This covers a failure of the output while FFmpeg continues running. It does not establish that FFmpeg will relaunch after a crash or that YouTube will resume the same live event after a process restart. Those require separate supervision and event-resumption checks.

Set YouTube’s 4K 60fps encoding parameters

For H.264 at 4K/2160p and 60 fps, YouTube’s consulted encoder guidance recommends 35 Mbps. It also recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds, and RTMPS. YouTube’s guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs, with codec caveats for HDR. Check the current guidance and YouTube Live Control Room for the settings that apply to your codec, SDR or HDR mode, and stream key before deployment.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

YouTube describes RTMPS as the secure extension to RTMP in its live encoder settings guidance. Google also documents delivery to YouTube over RTMPS in its RTMPS ingestion guide.

Configure FFmpeg to retry a temporary output failure

  1. Keep your working input and encoding setup. Configure the source and encoder to produce the intended 3840×2160, 60 fps stream. Preserve any input-specific options that your existing workflow needs.
  2. Wrap the output in FIFO. Set the FIFO format to FLV and enable -attempt_recovery 1. To follow the documentation example’s retry interval, set -recovery_wait_time 1.
  3. Choose overflow behavior deliberately. The example includes -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1. This allows queued packets to be dropped when overflow occurs; whether that trade-off is acceptable depends on your continuity and latency needs. Validate it with your actual source and network.
  4. Use YouTube’s current RTMPS destination and stream key. Retrieve the ingestion details from YouTube Live Control Room, keep the key private, and do not assume an endpoint from an old setup remains current.
  5. Check both kinds of failure. In a controlled session, interrupt the output temporarily and inspect FFmpeg’s logs to see whether it recovers. Separately test what happens when the FFmpeg process exits. A successful test of one case does not verify the other.

Documentation-derived command pattern

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
  -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f fifo -fifo_format flv
  -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
  -map 0:v -map 0:a RTMPS_DESTINATION

This is a structural example based on FFmpeg’s documentation, not a production command tested across builds. Replace INPUT and RTMPS_DESTINATION with the real input and current YouTube RTMPS URL plus stream key. The H.264/AAC encoders and stream maps shown may need to change for your media and desired output. Ensure your actual encoder options also implement the resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval you intend to use.

Handle a terminated FFmpeg process separately

FIFO output recovery only addresses temporary output failure while FFmpeg is still processing. If FFmpeg exits, a separate process supervisor is needed to relaunch it; the cited FFmpeg documentation does not prescribe a supervisor or establish what YouTube will do with a newly started publisher. Verify the YouTube live event’s behavior after restart in a controlled session rather than assuming the same event will resume or that viewer playback will be uninterrupted.

Troubleshoot recovery problems

  • FFmpeg exits and never retries: FIFO recovery is not process supervision. Confirm whether the process is still alive; configure and test a separate supervisor if you need relaunch after exit.
  • FFmpeg retries, but YouTube does not resume the event: Output reconnection and YouTube event resumption are distinct. Check the live event and current ingestion details in Live Control Room, and test the restarted-publisher case separately.
  • The stream connects but does not meet the target format: Check that the actual encode is 3840×2160 at 60 fps and review codec, bitrate, CBR, keyframe interval, and SDR/HDR choices against YouTube’s current guidance.
  • Overflow causes gaps or latency changes: Reassess whether -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 fits your workflow. Test with the real source and network; the setting entails a packet-dropping trade-off rather than a guarantee of gapless output.
  • The destination rejects the stream: Recheck the RTMPS destination and stream key in Live Control Room, and ensure the key has not been exposed. YouTube recommends RTMPS in its encoder guidance.
