To craft one item frame, use a crafting table: put 1 leather in the center of the 3×3 grid and 8 sticks in the other eight slots.
Item frame recipe
Arrange the ingredients in this exact pattern. It is a shaped recipe, so putting the same ingredients in different positions will not work.

The output is 1 item frame. A recipe reference says it checked this recipe in Java 26.3 and Bedrock 1.26.50.4 on September 27, 2026; that report covers those versions, not every version or custom world. Minecraft’s item-frame article also describes surrounding leather with sticks.
If the recipe does not work
- Make sure you are using a crafting table’s 3×3 grid.
- Put the leather in the center and fill each of the eight surrounding slots with a stick.
- Use the recipe book to find the recipe and check its required supplies. Minecraft’s crafting guide says missing ingredients are highlighted in red and recipes do not allow substitutions.
That guidance covers standard crafting; it does not diagnose modded worlds, custom servers, or every version-specific issue.

What an item frame is for
Place an item frame against the side, top, or bottom of a supported block, then use an item on the frame to display it. Use the filled frame again to rotate the displayed item. A redstone comparator can read the frame’s rotation, and a map placed in a frame displays at the scale of a full block. Minecraft’s item-frame article explains these uses.

Besides crafting, Minecraft says item frames can generate in End ships. Some high-level cartographer villagers also sell them for seven emeralds, according to the same official item-frame article.
