You can make a basic custom NPC in Minecraft: Bedrock Edition by placing an NPC spawn egg in a Creative world with cheats enabled and operator permissions, then using the NPC editor to set its name, skin, dialogue, and optional commands. Minecraft Education has a similar editor, but requires World Builder permission to place and edit NPCs. These instructions do not apply universally to Java Edition.

Choose the right NPC workflow

For a stationary character that displays text and can run commands, use the built-in NPC editor. It is the quickest route and does not require an add-on. Minecraft Education uses NPCs for instructional text, hints, directions, and other in-world guidance; villagers are separate entities with different behavior.

What you want Use this route What it involves
A character with a name, skin, dialogue, and simple actions Built-in NPC editor in Bedrock Creative mode, cheats, operator permissions, and the NPC spawn egg. Microsoft’s Bedrock custom NPC tutorial
An instructional or narrative character in a lesson world Minecraft Education NPC editor World Builder permission to place and edit NPCs. Minecraft Education support guide
Dialogue that branches into different scenes Bedrock dialogue commands and scene files NPC dialogue commands and JSON scene files in a behavior pack’s dialogue folder. Microsoft’s NPC dialogue tutorial
A wholly new entity type, rather than an edited built-in NPC Bedrock add-on Behavior and resource packs, including JSON files for behavior and appearance. Microsoft’s custom entity tutorial

Make a basic NPC in Bedrock Edition

  1. Prepare the world. Enter a Creative world with cheats enabled and operator permissions, as required by Microsoft’s Bedrock tutorial.
  2. Get an NPC spawn egg. Find it in the Creative inventory, or run /give @p spawn_egg 1 51. This command is for the documented Bedrock workflow; do not assume it works in Java Edition or every release.
  3. Place the NPC. Use the egg on the block where the character should stand. If it appears in the wrong place, the tutorial says you can left-click the NPC to despawn it.
  4. Set its identity and dialogue. Open the NPC editor, enter a name, choose an available skin, and write the displayed text. Microsoft’s tutorial documents a 32-character name limit and a 307-character dialogue display limit; available skins and labels may vary with the installed version.
  5. Add an action if needed. In Advanced Settings, add commands in the command fields, one command per field. Multiple commands can be configured to run in order when the player closes the dialogue.
  6. Make actions optional. Turn on Button Mode and enter button text. A player can then select the button to run its associated command rather than having the action run automatically when dialogue closes.
  7. Test the interaction. Switch out of Creative mode to Survival or Adventure to interact with the custom NPC, as the tutorial specifies.

Make an NPC in Minecraft Education

  1. Confirm permission. A World Builder must place and edit NPCs.
  2. Get the egg and place the character. Find the NPC spawn egg in the Creative inventory under Tools, then place it in the world.
  3. Configure the NPC. Open its editor to set a name, dialogue, skin, and options in Advanced Settings.
  4. Set up buttons. The Education support guide documents up to six buttons, in any combination of URLs and commands. A button may wait for the player to click it or be configured to run or display when interaction ends. URL buttons open in the user’s default web browser.

When you need branching dialogue or a new entity

Branching dialogue

For scenes that change based on player choices, Microsoft’s Bedrock creator documentation describes a setup using the NPC entity, dialogue commands, and scene files. The scene files are JSON stored in a behavior pack’s dialogue folder; creators can use multiple scenes or organize them by NPC, chapter, or world. The /dialogue command can open or change an NPC’s dialogue for a player, and its command reference says cheats are required: Microsoft’s /dialogue command reference.

A custom entity type

If the goal is a new kind of entity rather than a stationary character made with the built-in editor, the project is an add-on. Microsoft’s tutorial calls for both behavior and resource packs: behavior files define server-side behavior, while client entity files in the resource pack define appearance. The tutorial recommends familiarity with JSON and mentions a code editor such as Visual Studio Code. This is a separate, more involved workflow; it is not necessary for an ordinary custom NPC.

Edition and version checks

The spawn-egg command and editor steps above come from Microsoft’s Bedrock creator documentation, while the World Builder and button details come from Minecraft Education support. Neither source establishes a universal Java Edition recipe or a specific current game build number. Check that your installed edition exposes the NPC egg and editor before following the steps, and use the instructions for that edition rather than applying Bedrock commands to Java.
