For one lecture file, add an OBS Media Source and turn on Loop. For a playlist of multiple lectures, add a VLC Video source and leave Loop Playlist enabled. These settings repeat playback; they do not keep OBS, your computer, internet connection, or streaming service online by themselves.

Choose the right OBS source

What you want to repeat OBS source Repeat control Important requirement
One lecture file Media Source Loop No VLC installation is needed for this source.
Several lecture files in sequence VLC Video Loop Playlist VLC must be installed separately; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

OBS documents the VLC Video source as allowing a playlist of items, unlike Media Source. The source and its properties are described in the OBS Media Sources documentation.

Repeat one lecture file with Media Source

  1. In OBS, select the scene that will carry the lecture.
  2. In the Sources dock, click + and choose Media Source.
  3. Name the source if prompted, then select the lecture file in its properties.
  4. Enable Loop, then confirm the properties. OBS documents this setting as off by default; when enabled, the file plays again when playback completes.
  5. Check that the source is visible in the active scene and that the video and audio play as intended.

OBS lists supported formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. A supported extension does not guarantee every file will behave identically, so test the specific recording you plan to stream.

Repeat several lectures with VLC Video

  1. Install VLC if it is not already installed. Match its architecture to OBS: for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS lists VLC Video support for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
  2. In the scene’s Sources dock, click + and choose VLC Video.
  3. Add the lecture files to the source’s playlist in the order you want them played.
  4. Leave Loop Playlist enabled. OBS documents it as on by default; after the source runs out of media, it starts the playlist again.
  5. Leave Shuffle Playlist off to play lectures in listed order. It is off by default; enable it only if you want the order randomized.
  6. Confirm the source is visible in the scene used for the stream, then test that the playlist advances and restarts correctly.

VLC Video has a visibility behavior that defaults to stopping playback when the source is not visible and restarting it when it becomes visible. If your scene changes could hide the source, account for that behavior in your scene arrangement or choose a different visibility behavior where appropriate. A hidden or stopped source is not the same as a playlist that failed to loop.

Prepare OBS for a long-running stream

Set up the stream connection

  1. Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard for stream setup. OBS says the wizard accounts for intended use, computer resources, and network conditions.
  2. Configure the platform connection and stream settings for the service you are using. The right resolution, encoder, and bitrate depend on your platform, computer, network, and audience; this title does not establish universal values. Check the platform’s current limits and recommendations rather than copying a setting intended for a different setup.
  3. Check OBS’s audio output settings and watch the Audio Mixer meters while the lecture plays. Make sure the intended lecture audio is reaching the stream mix.
  4. Make a short test stream or recording and review both picture and sound before relying on the setup for a long broadcast.

Separate playback from delivery

Looping controls what the media source plays. Stream delivery depends on OBS continuing to run, the computer staying powered and stable, the network connection keeping up, and the platform accepting the stream. A loop setting alone cannot guarantee 24/7 uptime.

OBS defines dropped frames as a connection that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; excessive drops can disconnect a stream. Its stream connection troubleshooting guide suggests checking network configuration and software, trying another server or service, and lowering bitrate to fit stable upload capacity and platform limits. The guide’s suggestion to begin around 75% of total upload speed is a troubleshooting starting point, not a universal rule or guarantee. Measure under the conditions in which you will stream and test the actual broadcast path.

OBS recommends a wired connection when streaming because Wi-Fi can be unstable. Check cables as well if connection problems persist; a faulty network cable is one possible hardware cause listed in the troubleshooting guidance. Ethernet is relevant if you use Wi-Fi or suspect a cable fault, but it is not required simply to enable looping.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes

Symptom Likely cause to check What to do
The lecture stops at the end of one file. Media Source’s Loop is off. Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop.
A multi-file playlist does not restart. The source is not VLC Video, or Loop Playlist is off. Use VLC Video for the playlist, then check that Loop Playlist is enabled.
VLC Video is unavailable or will not work. VLC may not be installed, or its architecture may not match OBS. Install VLC; if OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC.
Playback stops after changing scenes. The VLC source may have become hidden; its default visibility behavior stops playback when hidden. Keep the source visible in the active scene, or adjust the visibility behavior deliberately.
OBS shows dropped frames or disconnects. The connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. Check the network and software, try a different server or service, and reduce bitrate to a tested level within stable upload capacity and platform limits. Consider Ethernet if Wi-Fi is unstable.
OBS shows no dropped frames, but some viewers report buffering. Viewer networks, devices, and locations can differ from the broadcaster’s connection. Consider a lower bitrate within platform recommendations; this may reduce resolution, quality, or frame rate.

OBS discusses viewer-side buffering separately from broadcaster dropped frames in its dropped frames and connection issues guide. A clean connection at the broadcaster end does not establish that every viewer has the same playback conditions.
