The safest way to share a custom Minecraft Java Edition setup in CurseForge is to create a profile in the app, keep every mod on the same Minecraft version and modloader, then use Share Profile to export an importable ZIP or generate a temporary profile code. A ZIP can be kept and resent; a profile code is convenient but expires after seven days.

What a CurseForge profile contains
CurseForge uses a profile to hold the settings and files needed to launch one custom Minecraft Java Edition instance. The profile records the Minecraft version, the selected modloader, installed content and configuration files. Sharing the profile is different from sending a single mod, a world folder or a data pack: the recipient must receive a ZIP exported in CurseForge’s format or use a profile code.
Before creating anything, decide whether this is a private pack for specific friends or a public project that other players should discover. Private sharing is quickest and lets you choose exactly which folders leave your computer. Public publishing adds a required manifest structure plus licensing and credit obligations.

Create the custom profile in the CurseForge app
- Open the CurseForge app and select Minecraft.
- Click Create.
- Enter a profile name that identifies the pack. A name such as Server Season 3 is more useful to recipients than a generic name such as Test.
- Select the Minecraft version you intend to play.
- Select a compatible modloader, then create the profile. CurseForge supports Forge, Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt profiles. You can also choose Vanilla; a Vanilla profile has no modloader and does not support mods.
- Open the new profile under My Modpacks.
- Choose Add More Content and install the mods, resource packs or maps you want.
- When the profile is assembled, click Play to launch it and verify that the instance starts before sharing it.
Choose the loader deliberately

A loader is not interchangeable just because two loaders support the same Minecraft release. A Fabric mod cannot be made compatible by placing it in a Forge profile, and changing the Minecraft version can be just as disruptive. Select the loader named by the mod’s CurseForge page or documentation rather than choosing the most familiar option.
Add only the content the profile needs
Add More Content is the profile’s controlled installation point. Add the mods first, then resource packs and maps that match the same game version. Keep notes about optional additions so you can explain to friends which parts are required and which are cosmetic.

Keep Minecraft, loader and mod versions aligned
CurseForge marks a mod or profile as incompatible when the Minecraft versions differ, when the modloader differs, or when both differ. Compatibility is a three-part match: Minecraft version, loader family and the loader version required by the content. Even when two items advertise the same Minecraft release, they may target different loaders or loader builds.

Use Profile Options when a dependency names a loader release
If a mod or dependency specifies another loader version, open the profile’s Profile Options. Select the required version, click Done and relaunch the profile. Re-export or regenerate the share only after the corrected profile launches. Otherwise, your friend will receive the same mismatch you just fixed.
No compatibility check guarantees that every mod works with every other mod. Mods can conflict because of their own requirements or behavior. Treat a successful launch of the complete profile as your practical checkpoint, and tell recipients which Minecraft version and loader the pack uses.

Share a private profile as a ZIP
- In the Minecraft tab, select the profile you want to distribute.
- Open the profile’s top-right context menu.
- Choose Share Profile.
- Select the folders you want included.
- Confirm the selection. CurseForge creates an importable ZIP.
- Send that ZIP through the file-sharing method you prefer.
For a normal modpack share without worlds, the CurseForge support workflow calls for selecting the config and mods folders. The folder chooser is deliberate: include the configuration and content needed for the recipient’s instance, but do not distribute personal files unnecessarily. If your pack depends on additional folders, select them in the Share Profile window and verify the resulting archive before sending it.
When a ZIP is the better choice
- You want an archive that can be retained and sent again after the original session.
- Some recipients will not import the pack immediately.
- You need to choose the folders included in the package.
- You want a record of one known-good version of the profile.
The ZIP is an export, not a live link. If you later add a mod or change a configuration, export a new ZIP and identify the new version clearly so recipients do not mistake an older archive for the current pack.
Share with a CurseForge profile code
- Log in to CurseForge.
- Open the profile’s Share Profile window.
- Choose Generate code.
- Send the generated code to your friend.
A profile code is valid for seven days, according to CurseForge Support (2026). After it expires, generate a new code from the Share Profile window. CurseForge’s January 22, 2025 release notes identified profile sharing by code as an app feature.

ZIP or code: which should you send?

For a small group installing together, send the code and remain available while everyone imports it. For a community, a delayed installation or a backup, use the ZIP so the share does not depend on a seven-day window.
Import the profile on another computer
- Open the CurseForge app and go to Minecraft.
- Click Import.
- For an archive, choose Import Profile .zip and select the exported ZIP.
- For a code, choose Use Profile code and enter the code you received.
- Let CurseForge create the profile. A ZIP import installs the pack as a new profile under the Minecraft tab.
- Open the imported profile and launch it. If CurseForge reports a version or loader conflict, correct that requirement before adding unrelated changes.
The importer is designed for modpacks and custom profiles that match CurseForge’s export structure. It is not a general-purpose file installer: an individual mod, a world folder or a data pack cannot be imported through this profile flow. Those items must be handled through the appropriate in-app content or file workflow instead of being presented as a profile ZIP.
Fix an “Invalid file” message

Do not solve an invalid-file error by zipping an arbitrary instance folder. The export operation adds the structure CurseForge expects; manually compressing files can omit that structure or place files at the wrong level.

Prepare a pack for public CurseForge submission
Private sharing and public publishing are different workflows. A private share is intended for people you choose. A public project is discoverable and must follow CurseForge’s packaging, licensing and credit rules.
Required archive structure
For a public project submission, the ZIP must contain manifest.json directly at the archive root and an overrides folder. Do not place the manifest inside another enclosing directory.

Before uploading, open the ZIP and confirm the root level visually. A structure such as MyPack/manifest.json is not the same as having manifest.json at the root. Keep custom files inside overrides so the importer knows where they belong.
Licensing and credits
Third-party mods must satisfy CurseForge’s licensing and credit requirements. Personal permission is not accepted as a substitute for the required rights for an unlisted third-party mod. Check each included project’s terms and provide the credits the project requires before submitting. If a mod is hosted on CurseForge, reference it through the generated manifest rather than bundling its JAR.

- The profile is for Minecraft Java Edition.
- The selected Minecraft version is the one your recipients should use.
- The loader family and loader release match the mods’ requirements.
- The profile launches successfully before export.
- You used Share Profile, rather than zipping an arbitrary folder.
- For a standard share without worlds, you selected
configandmods. - You chose a ZIP when recipients may install later, or a code when they can import within seven days.
- Recipients know to use Import Profile .zip or Use Profile code, not an individual-mod import.
- A public archive has
manifest.jsonat its root and custom files underoverrides. - Publicly distributed third-party content has the required licenses and credits.
Keeping a shared pack maintainable
When you change the Minecraft version, loader version, mods or configuration, treat the result as a new pack revision. Launch the revised profile, then export another ZIP or generate a new code from the updated profile. Give the revision a clear name or filename so recipients can tell which archive is current.
If a friend reports a failure, first ask which Minecraft version and loader the imported profile shows. A mismatch can be corrected in the profile; an invalid archive must be re-exported. Keeping those two failure types separate prevents repeated imports of a broken file.
