The golem collects items from copper chests and sorts them into regular or trapped chests. It is available in Minecraft: Java Edition 1.21.9 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.111 (The Copper Age); update your game before following these instructions.
What you need
- One copper block
- One carved pumpkin or jack o’lantern
- At least one copper chest for incoming items
- Regular chests or trapped chests for destinations
- An axe if you later need to reverse an unoxidized statue
No external item or special workstation is required. All components are obtained in-game.
How to make a copper golem
- Place a copper block where you want the golem to appear.
- Place a carved pumpkin or jack o’lantern directly on top of the copper block. The pumpkin-type block must be the final block placed; placing it last triggers the Java Edition spawn behavior.
- Wait for the copper golem to appear, then remove or protect nearby blocks as needed so it can move between your input and destination chests.
Java Edition 1.21.9 officially accepts both a carved pumpkin and a jack o’lantern. Earlier previews described only the carved-pumpkin version, so the finalized release rule is the one to use.
How the sorting system works
Input: copper chests
When the golem is not carrying an item, it searches for nearby copper chests and can take items from any copper chest variant, including oxidized and waxed copper chests. Put unsorted materials in these chests.

Destination: regular and trapped chests
After picking up an item, the golem searches regular chests and trapped chests. It can place the item in a chest that is empty or already contains that same item type. It does not use a destination chest filled with a different item.
Published search limits
The Java Edition 1.21.9 rules define the following limits; Bedrock Edition 1.21.111 repeats these sorting rules and bounds.

Designing a reliable sorting area
Keep every relevant chest in range
Measure 32 blocks horizontally and eight vertically from the golem’s position when laying out storage. A chest outside those bounds will not be found during that search. If your room is larger, use separate sorting cells with their own golem and copper-chest input.

Give each item a compatible destination
Place at least one empty destination chest for a new item type, or seed a chest with the exact item you want it to accept. Leave space in that chest so the golem can place its stack.
Account for the ten-container sequence
The golem checks no more than ten containers in sequence. Keep each sorting cell compact and avoid mixing unrelated storage chests into the same route if you need predictable results.
Recover a held item manually
Use an empty hand on the golem to make it drop the item it is carrying. This is useful when it has selected the wrong destination, when you are dismantling the room, or when you need the item immediately instead of waiting for another search.

Oxidation, waxing, and the Copper Golem Statue
Natural oxidation
Copper golems oxidize over time. A fully oxidized golem that is not waxed becomes a Copper Golem Statue and drops anything it was holding at that moment. The statue keeps the golem’s name.
Preventing the statue outcome
Wax the golem to prevent further oxidation, just as copper blocks can be waxed. Mojang also describes copper chests as able to oxidize or remain pristine when waxed, so choose the appearance and maintenance behavior you want when building the room.
Statue poses and restoration
A Copper Golem Statue supports standing, sitting, running, and star poses. Interact with the statue to cycle its pose. If the statue has no oxidation, use an axe on it to turn it back into a Copper Golem. The axe restoration behavior is documented for both Java’s finalized rules and Bedrock’s release notes.

Java and Bedrock availability
The Copper Age feature set is available on both editions. Java Edition 1.21.9 lists the Copper Golem, Copper Chest, and Copper Golem Statue Block. Bedrock Edition 1.21.111 is the named Bedrock release for The Copper Age and is dated 30 September 2025. Mojang advises updating Minecraft to the latest version; later releases can change mechanics, so check current release notes if your game is newer than these versions.
Troubleshooting common failures
The golem did not appear
- Confirm the base is a copper block, not another copper-related block.
- Use a carved pumpkin or jack o’lantern directly above it.
- Break and replace the pumpkin-type block last to retrigger the spawn pattern.
- Verify that your edition has The Copper Age update installed.
Items remain in the copper chest
- Check that the golem can reach the copper chest and that it is within the published 32-block horizontal and eight-block vertical search range.
- Make sure the golem is not already carrying another item.
- Remember that it checks only up to ten containers in a sequence.
The golem carries an item but does not deposit it
- Provide a regular or trapped chest that is empty or already contains that exact item type.
- Leave room in the destination chest.
- Wait through the seven-second retry interval if no matching chest was found on the previous attempt.
- Use an empty hand to make the golem drop the item and then adjust the layout.
The golem became a statue
This is the expected result of full oxidation when the golem was not waxed. Its held item is dropped. If the statue has no oxidation, use an axe to restore the golem; otherwise, keep it as a decorative statue.
The Bottom Line
For a dependable sorter, place the pumpkin last on a copper block, feed unsorted items into copper chests, keep compatible regular or trapped destinations within 32 horizontal and eight vertical blocks, and wax the golem if you do not want oxidation to turn it into a statue.
